  • Ive been having trouble playing the bassline and the melody simultaneously, what should i do to practice?

  • @palatadoman Thank you for your interest and question. Please check out my instructional video CD # 1 on ebay by searching: keni lee In addition to teaching songs, it contains exercises that will clearify your question and the methods and techniques I use to figure out and arrange songs. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • Or you could spend 5 dollars and get one.

  • @rwbrdms1 Thank you for your comment. Yes, but back in the day, people had to be more frugal (a lot like in today's economical situation) and make use of what was at hand. Additionally, things like this were not commercially available. Although today, there are many manufacturers of a wide variety of slides; glass, metal, bone, and ceramic that sell for a wide range of prices. Enjoy your practice.

  • Hello, Do you know how to play the Bob Dylan´s versión of "In my time of dying"? I´ll be very grateful if you bring some light to me with that song.

  • @crolesco I have always been a big fan of BD. Especially his first album. Try googling for tab. Try to figure out the key. Get the bass notes. I am not sure if he is in standard or open tuning. He may be using a capo too. I believe the song is based around an E chord. Sorry, I could not be of more direct help. Please check out my instructional video CD#1, if you are interested in learning bottleneck slide. Visit ebay and Search: keni lee Enjoy your practice.

  • great

  • @minhimar Thank you for your comment. Enjoy your practice.

  • I really got a kick out of this vid. not sure y but I did!! Maybe cuz it was quirky and unpretentious.....??? Buy cool nonetheless.

  • @Txbui Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you enjoyed the lesson. Enjoy your practice.

  • man how can i play a pentatonic scale .. or any other scale .. on this tuning.....need a help.

  • @rashkrin Thank you for your interest and question. Please consider purchasing my instructional video CD 1 by visiting ebay and searching: keni lee Not only will you learn songs, but you will better understand the fingerboard and learn how to figure out songs and make your own arrangements. Additionally, you can feel free to write if any questions arise as you work through the lessons. Enjoy.

  • @rashkrin wow its easy, you can just find it out by ear, the difference in the positions is 1 -2 frets max... just search a little and try to memorize the new shape...

  • @sandiyy Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your practice.

  • lama nih kaya emak2, buset dah ya...

  • @bimzsniperalldy Thank you for your interest and comment. What language is this? Use Babel Fish and translate into English. Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess sorry I too enjoy your videos, again sorry in advance

  • @bimzsniperalldy Thank you for your comment. No need to apologize. I appreciate your interest. Enjoy.

  • Great video Keni, one of the best tutotials on Youtube. I always wanted to learn to play slide guitar and you make it so easy, thank you so much. Do you know how to play Seasick Steve's "Never Go West" or "Thunderbird" ? I just heard them a couple of days ago and can't get them out of my head.

  • @eazyal123 Thank you for your comment. I am glad to hear you found the lesson informative. In general, I do not cover contempory artists. I play songs from the 1920/30s. If you are interested in exploring this style in greater depth, please consider purchasing my instructional video CDs that are available on ebay by searching: keni lee I believe you will find the information useful for figuring out the songs you want to play. Feel free to write if you have any further questions. Enjoy.

  • Hi keni great lesson. I started playing slide yesterday lol. Can you please tell me what frets your using at the end of your video while doubling up the D strings. That's a very cool sound!

  • @roadlizard666 Thank you for your comment and question. That is from my rendition of BWJ's Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground. If you are interested in learning this style, I would suggest purchasing CD 1. Visit ebay and search: keni lee On the video, I will teach you the method I use to figure out and create arrangements. You will have no problem understanding my renditions too. Enjoy your practice. Keep on slidin'

  • thanx dude...nice vid

  • @donkeyplowing Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • He man! I got one question, whenever I put my slide on my strings it'll already makes a hammer-on sound.... how can I prevent that from happening??(I just got my slideXD) Any tips aswell??

  • @FRIVDSCH Thank you for your question. Possible solutions: strings too light, action too low, slide too heavy/big, not muting the strings with left index finger. I hope this helps. Enjoy your practice, Keni Lee

  • are all the pecks in your right hand identical???

  • @reservaimoral Thank you for your question. I am wearing a Golden Gate extra heavy thumb pick and on my index and middle finger, I am wearing National metal finger picks. I hope this answers your question. Enjoy.

  • man that sound just makes the hairs stand up on tha back of my neck

  • @TheSlippySock Thank you for your comment. I hope this means you liked it. LOL Enjoy.

  • Thanks man. Really relaxed and helpful video

  • @ZX9RinHollywood Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you found the video lesson helpful. Enjoy your practice.

  • This probably sounds pretty unconventional, but if you are a smoker a cheap lighter works perfectly if nothing else will suffice. Just hold it bottom down on top of the strings like a normal slide and it will sound great

  • @Hoffletrof456 Thank you for your comment. Yes, certainly from a utilitarian point of view, many things can work. Pocketknife, closed straight razor, lipstick tube, etc. Although, slides that you can wear on a finger are more fuctional allowing the ability to use your fingers to play chords too. Additionally, as far as tone, heavy glass or metal is essential. Enjoy.

  • KeniLee,

Been working the past couple days with the new archtop I bought for my daughter and I...As you may recall I wanted a guitar to leave in Open tuning. We got it! ....tuned to "D" and we love it.

Thanks for your great lesson.....we are using it right now.

  • @rastablues1 Thank you for your response. Glad to be of assistance and to hear you are enjoying the fasinating world of open tuning. Remember if you are interested in more lessons, please check out my instructional CDs on ebay by searching: keni lee Enjoy your practice.

  • Yes, I hear you crying...oh dear...

  • @letterli Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • I' have a fingerstyle-set up on my guitar...very low action. I'm considering buying a cheap six-string (just for learning slide) then having the action adjusted.....How high should the action actually be? Looking at the Weissenborns and old Hawaiian guitars, it looks like the action is REALLY high...

    Thanks!

  • @belikewater001 Thank you for your question. Lap style slide is very different than playing slide holding the guitar in the standard position. Bottleneck guitar is basically fingerpicking style mainly played in open tunings with the addition of the slide. The string height is no different than a standard guitar. You still want the ability to finger notes over the entire fingerboard. The relationship between tuning and string guage creates the right tension for the slide.

  • @belikewater001 Having a second guitar makes sense. Using slightly heavier strings and tuning below standard to open D or open G will set the guitar up for slide. Of course, using heavier strings prevents the possibility of tuning back up to standard. Please check out my instructional CDs on ebay by searching: keni lee Enjoy your practice.

  • Comment removed

  • @belikewater001 Thank you for your comment. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the good thing about learning this song is that the lyrics are the same as the notes you are playing with the slide. Did you see I supplied some basic tablature under the video? Click on "Show more". Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • @BabeoTishaaa751 Thank you for your comment. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • Slide is an amazing thing

  • @The10AMautomatic Thank you for your comment. Yes, I have to agree with you. It adds an extreme effect that can either command an exciting attention or an element of darkness and misery. Very expressive. Enjoy.

  • Somehow you remind me of Anthony Bourdain. This is very helpful. :)

  • @TerenceTeng2 Thank you for your comment. Ya, heard that before. LOL Glad to hear you found my video helpful. Enjoy.

  • It's nice that there is good folks like you out their keeping the blues alive. Nice lesson.

  • @FOLKYOU100 Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you enjoyed the lesson.

  • shut up for a second so I can hear the guitar... your good but your a shitty teacher

  • @mojofakkman Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess ACTUALLY... we really enjoy your teaching style! thanks for making this video! love the musical education too!

  • @erickacorban Thank you for your comment. I am glad to hear you are enjoying my lessons and finding them informative. Please feel free to write if you have any questions.

  • KeniLee,

I'm a long working "by ear" musician that always wanted to play delta slide.

Then I fell into the ultimate old delta blues guitar just by luck.

A 1930's Kay Craft Venetian. Adjustable neck for regular or slide playing.

Been searching high and low on the net and your lessons seem the best.

Thanks & look for my name on a DVD order soon. Casey O

  • Great vid, this is exactly what I was looking for. I've never really played guitar and I'm starting to learn some old-school delta blues. I think I might go ahead and get some of your stuff on ebay too. What do you think a beginner should get first?

  • @anavarre Thank you for your interest and comment. I would suggest starting with CD 1. It begins a comprehensive course (CD1 - CD 3) that systematically explores the Bottleneck slide style starting with open D tuning. In the lessons, I teach the same techniques and musical theory I use to figure out and arrange songs myself. Addtionally, you can contact me, if any questions arise as you work through the lessons. Enjoy

  • great lesson Sir!

  • @NicholasSpanos Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you found the lesson helpful. Enjoy.

  • hello....

  • @mosharybobo Hello...Happy New year 2011. Enjoy.

  • So when you say "CD" do you mean audio lessons? or are they video lessons?

  • @tMattLZ Thank you for your interest and question. The instructional CDs are video with audio. They are formatted to play on a PC or Mac. The videos are windows media (.wma) and can also be played using the winamp player that can be downloaded free online. Please visit ebay and search: keni lee

    Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess

Tell me you please to god know Rory Gallagher (passed away)? If not do yourself a favour & search his cover of JB Huttos ''Too much alcohol'' on the acoustic RTE tv show. Alot of his acoustic work featured slide & he loved all the old-school blues (delta/mississippi etc).

Hopefully i've introduced you to a new guitarist who i'll eat my hat if you don't find immensely talented

  • @tvrulesnation Thank you for your comment. Yes, certainly I know who Rory Gallagher is, and I agree with you, he was a very talented performer. Have you ever listened to Sam Mitchell? A personal favorite of mine. Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess

Can't say i have, i'll give him a look though when i finish my study. Glad to hear ye know of Rory, i'm amazed by how underrated he is by my generation in Ireland itself.

Love the video too, gorgeous sound off the guitar

  • @tvrulesnation Thank you for your response. In general, Rural Blues has never gained any real national attention here either. It was brought to the fore front mainly through covers by bands like the Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, etc. I guess Keb Mo and the PBS series, The Blues more recently attracted more attention to this style. Enjoy.

  • im 15 and i started learning to play metal on guitar 'bout a year ago. and thats all i wanted to do was metal and rock. then today i was wandering around the music store and seen a $5 bottle neck slide and i remembered robbie krieger from the doors used one of those so i bought it. this just opened up a whole new world to me. u can bet ill be drowing myself in the blues from now on. maybe ill start a blues metal band. thanks a lot man. this was a great video.

  • @shlongy14 Thank you for sharing your story. Although I mainly play Blues, you can also hear I'm influenced by folk, country, and even middle eastern music. Additionally, I listen to a wide range of music. My point is, musicians have been blending different syles and creating new sounds for a very long time now. I encourage you to open your ears to a wide variety of styles and musicians. As youth, we identify and express ourselves through music. I was into rock and punk. Happy Holidays

  • You really can use anything as a slide doesn't even need to be anything that can fit on your finger. I use a rusty alan key : )

  • @Metalhead001122 Thank you for your response. Yes, you can also use a closed pocket knife. Although, with a slide on your finger, it is possible to fret notes and play chords. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • Good stuff, thanks man!

  • @ookami93527 Thank you for your comment. Sorry about the delayed reponse. I just returned from a 15 day trip to China. Happy Hoildays. Enjoy, Keni Lee

  • hahaha YES instead of buying a slide thing, i just got a socket from garage! genious!

  • @ilovedamusic1000 Thank you for your comment. Yes, keeping with the spirit of the times. Make use of what is at hand. Next, you could try making your own glass slide out of an empty wine bottle. Enjoy.

  • Hey, ths is GREAT stuff. I am teaching myself and you have really inspired me to work on my slide technique. Thanks a BUNCH!

  • @JIHURST Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you found my video inspirational. Enjoy.

  • Very informative little video. Thank you!

  • @pavlovdogs2 Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you found it helpful. Please feel free to write if I can be of further assistance. Enjoy.

  • man, your really good! im 15, and i usually dont listen to this kinda stuff, but your great! keep up the good work!

  • @hellomynameisaustinw Thank you for your kind words. Actually when I was your age I didn't listen to this kinda stuff either. I was listening to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones. I became interested this style while I was serving in the USAF down south in Texas. You should check out cigarboxnation. I will send you some information. Enjoy.

  • Chocolate on my fingers,Icing on my lips, sugar diabetis, blubber on my hips,I keep the the night light on in the kitchen,so I can go cruise,I got the "Oreo Cream Sandwich ,Chocolate cream sandwich cookie blues ! • @demmylowther Thank you for sharing. Enjoy.

  • awesome !

  • @newfreeguitarlesson Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • Dig what your doing, but...Your vocals drown out the guitar and can't use me ears to find the sounds when I am not looking at the positioning. Cool stuff tho. I would like to hear w/o vocals if possible to learn the guitar parts. Thanks for the time you put into the video.RB

  • @RunningBearStudios Thank you for your interest. Sorry about the quality of the guitar / vocal audio mix. Did you notice there is tablature for the song below the video? Click on the down arrows. Enjoy.

  • you are my favourite slide player

  • @surferboy14lp Thank you for your interest and taking the time to leave such a nice comment. Enjoy.

  • yes you are lonesome

  • @tdsq1 Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • @tdsq1 DOUGNUT!!

  • @Mark2245 Thank you for your comment. Enjoy

  • Yeah... da man.... it's not in tune..... dont matter... class

this guy is the real deal.... Mint.. loved it....

  • @hixxstar Thank you for your comment. Ya, you might be right. The way I look at it is, that to be perfect it has to be complete. Imperfection is then a part of perfection. LOL Did you know that john Lennon would purposely place his D string slightly out of tune, so he could recognize the sound of his guitar in a group recording? Enjoy.

  • Wow!, thats actually exactly what I'm looking for..Im not really trying to learn the song so much as find great slide guitar songs, does anything come to mind?

  • @anubis33233 Thank you for your comment. If I understand your statement correctly, you are not interested in learning to play, but you are interested in listening to more slide guitar songs? Please check out my CD, Good & Evil that is for sale on ebay by searching: keni lee

All the songs are performed in the bottleneck slide style. Enjoy

  • @anubis33233 I recommend you listen to the soundtrack for Trigun (Anime). The song "never could have been worse" is great. That's how I got here (:

  • @dandiaz19934 Thank you for your suggestion. I will check it out. Enjoy.

  • ur voice sounds familiar?

  • @101stAirborneSince44 Like someone you know personally? Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess no, like an actor? idk who tho, just sounds familiar, haha

    NICE VID!!!!!

btw, thanx 4 being in the USAF

  • @101stAirborneSince44 Thank you. I would not recomment the military for everyone. Going to collage and getting a degree should be the first objective. I knew a career in the military would not be for me, but my 4 year tour was very rewarding. Some people say I remind them of the actor, John Turturro. Enjoy.

  • how high is your action?

  • @iamelvisman68 Thank you for your question. My action is set the same as a regular guitar. The correct string tension for the slide to ride on is created by a relationship between the string gauge and tuning. For lower than standard tunings like open D and G, I use heavier strings to increase the string tension due to the fact I am tuning down. If you are interested in learning this style, please check out my instructional video CDs for sale on ebay by searching: keni lee

    Enjoy.

  • When a guy gives a lesson this good, I have no problem whatsoever if he wants to add a little plug for his stuff at the end. Very cool that he did the lesson first, and the plug last! Wouldn't it be nice if every YouTuber did it that way?!

  • @fenderstratguy Thank you for taking the time to leave your encouraging comment. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • i couldn't find anything to use for a slider so i started off with a pen... but you're a GREAT teacher and i just learned SO much about the style of playing. i love it. thanks very much.

  • @Dandyman500 Thank you for your interest and comment. Yes, that is the spirit, improvise. Utilize whatever is at hand. Enjoy.

  • shit duude

    you are sooo Ol' skool!!!

    thas epic ^__^

  • @samkhan230891 Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate that you took the time to send me some positive encouragement. Enjoy.

  • I am very happy to have found your pages. I do believe I will be ordering some of your instructional videos. You have a calm, practical, and informative method. Thanks for your efforts.

  • @DrJBN Thank you for your interest and comments. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • i really love to hear you singing that song! so please!!! make a video where you sing the song!

and great lesson! keep up the good work!!!

  • @stollefelix Thank you for your comments and encouragement. I am currently finishing up production of CD 5 (How to Play 4 string Cigar Box Guitar) and hope to have it up for sale in a week or two. Posting a complete performance of this song is a great idea. Hopefully I can find some time. Enjoy.

  • Guys never put a slide on your middle finger... on the wrong hand. Almost had to get it surgically removed. God dammit.

  • @MileswillDo Thank you for sharing. Another tip. Be very careful when testing the size of a bottle opening. Sticking your finger into a bottle causes a vacuum that might make it impossible to get off. It is better to measure a ring that fits correctly and use that to find the correct bottle. Enjoy.

  • your a good teacher man...nice and slow

  • @denisstander Thank you for your comment. I try my best to make my instructional videos as clear as possible, so students can make progress. If you enjoyed this lesson, please check out my video CD lessons for sale on ebay by searching: keni lee

    Enjoy.

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • @obitobi100 Thank you for your question. It was built for me by James Millinchuk. It is a reproduction of the small parlor guitars that were popular during the 1920 / 1930s and produced by companies like Oscar Schmidt (Stella), Regal, and Sears Supertone. Enjoy.

  • @bigboyd937 Thank you for your interest and comment. Please check out my instructional video CDs that are available for sale on ebay by searching: keni lee

I think you will discover that the CDs will help you build a solid foundation and provide insight for limitless exploration. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy the Summer.

  • great video!

  • @dinzakos6 Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • what are those metals things on your fingers?

  • @yodawgzwazzup Thank you for your question. I am wearing two metal fingerpicks (index and middle finger) and a plastic thumb pick. Not only do they increase the volume and tone of the guitar, but they protect my fingers, so I can play more aggressively against the metal strings. Enjoy.

  • Cheers for the clear and well-explained lesson!

  • @BuleJugaManusia Thank you for your comment and interest. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • Thanks KenniLee! Very simple sounding blues with a lot going on in the background. I'm going to have to find you other stuff on YouTube. If it's as good as this I'll buy that DVD.

  • @cyberhippy61 Thank you for your kind words and interest in my music. Enjoy.

  • great lesson keni. It is actually quite difficult to get the bass line down with the rest of the tune. Singing on top of that is nearly impossible so thanks a lot for the help!

Any tips to get the bass line to a comfortable feeling? It feels strange strumming the bass strings out of sync with the the high d string. You make it all look so easy.

  • @mrmattysull Thank you for your comment. I posted this lesson as an introduction to my video instructional CD series. If you are interested in learning this style, please consider purchasing CD 1. It starts right from the beginning and contain exercises that will help you build confidence with alternating the bass and playing a melody line at the same time. The CDs are very reasonably priced. To view the lesson descriptions, visit ebay and search: keni lee

    Enjoy.

  • @matthieunobles497 Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • What is the difference between a glass and a metal bottleneck?

  • @St0neTheCrow A heavy brass slide or a heavy glass slide will produce a good tone. Glass, although brittle, has a harder density than metal and tends to be able to produce a slightly better tone. The thin pyrex slides they sell in the stores or those chrome slides are not very good. I am currently selling a nice cobalt slide or visit my friend Willy on ebay by searching willy's slides for a custom order. Enjoy.

  • thank you very much!! it's wonderful finding people like you on Youtube

  • @GodolfredoJefferson Thank you for your interest and comment. Enjoy.

  • Could you do a video applying slide blues lead guitar to traditional style folk music? Or would that sound good? Im a folk musician with a great love for the mississippi delta blues.

  • Great video Thanks it really helped man!!

  • @NorOnt18 My pleasure. I am glad to hear you found my video informative. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

  • Sounds great! Sorry, I can't type any more: I have to tune down few of my strings now.

  • @przemyslawlipiec LOL Thank you for your comment. Yes, tune down DADf#ad (low to high) Enjoy.

  • You sing well. Great teacher.

  • @fortthewayne Thank you for your comment and encouragement. Enjoy.

  • i agree wish you could teach me

  • @kiakon100 Thank you for your interest and comment. Please check out my instructional video CDs on ebay by searching Keni Lee

    Enjoy.

  • I just bought a slide too, and was itching to learn how to really work it. :)

  • @DrEricNewport Thank you for your interest. If you would like to learn more about this style please check out my video instructional CDs. Visit ebay and Search: Keni Lee Enjoy.

  • Great lesson man. I actually just bought a slide today and came along your video. Very insightful.

  • dud you cant sing but play can you..

  • @hiphopoj Thank you for your comment. For me, singing is definately a lot more challenging then playing, but that it is what practice and study is all about. Just because you do not have perfect pitch, should not stop you from singing. I am a work in progress. Simply, enjoying every step on the way. Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess I think you're a good blues singer. I find it difficult to sing AND play (I just can't multi-task). Maybe get singing lessons to fine tune your voice to make sure you don't strain it.

  • dud you cant sing but play can you..

  • best intro to slide ever!

  • i love it! us big kids with ADD who just space out and start playing before the instructions are done, get to hit pause and replay. and this kenilee gives us the real folk aspects of playing AND the music. Thank you!

  • @peregrinatious Thank you for your interest and comment. I am glad you are finding the lesson helpful and enjoyable.

  • Excellent teacher, excellent song. Thanks for the vid Mr. B.

  • @branscombesurf Thank you for your comments. If you would like to learn more, please check out my instructional video CDs on ebay. Search: Keni Lee

    Enjoy.

  • Thank you so much..that was a very expressive tune..what string do you use, and what guage

  • @ParagonX1X Basically any medium gauge (.013 - .056), but on my resonators for lower open tunings like G or D, I use heavier strings (.016 - .056) The treble strings are a little heavier to create the correct string tension for the slide. Thank you for your comment and question. Enjoy.

  • do you have any lessons explaining how to solo using open-d tuning in various keys and how it matches up?

  • @Jakesnake978 Thank you for your question. Please check out CD 1 (Open D)

It will help you understand how to use the pentatonic blues scale to play lead lines over basic three chord Blues progressions (D, G, A). Basically if the chords are in E, you play lead in E. It is simply a matter of using moveble scale pattern in different positions to match the key. Enjoy.

  • your a legend very good video. really helpfull and well explained

  • @daddy277 Thank you for your comment. I am glad you found my video informative. Please feel free to write if you have questions. Enjoy.

  • Grande!!!

  • @wondercore Thank you for your comment. Please feel free to write if you have questions. Enjoy.

  • the blues are so awesome.

simple riffs, the lyrics tell a story, and its just great.

    it really means something.

  • @nzephier Thank you for your comment. I highly agree. The Blues are raw, essential, utilitarian, down to Earth, easy to digest, angry, sad, happy...empathy.

  • yeah blues is the one genre of music that aint about guitar, its about actual emotion, and the heart that went into the song.

tho i do not listen to it often, blues is my fav type of music.

  • @nzephier Thank you for your comment. You make a good point. The ideas expressed through the vocals are very important. The rhythms can be traced back to early African drumming (also a form of communication) but the vocals relate the hardships endured through years of oppression, poor economic conditons and suffering. I have always felt that blues and gospel music frees the soul. Enjoy.

  • blues of course means waht it is named after: feelin blue.

but blues as music is the best because it is more soulful.
