I can appreciate the attention to detail but I would seriously like an honest account of time money and energy put into this and then weigh that to the cost of a commercially produced machine.
I will be building one of these real soon and I fully intend on building one that will cut to an acceptable tolerance and have it custom cut all upgrades for itself.
You have an amazing project there and would like mine to be as solid as that soon. Thanks for sharing...

Got any sources for rails and the cold-rolled plate-steel? (Ebayers jacked-up prices all over. But still good deals.)

As far as steel pricing, the company that will be cutting your order should have cold rolled in stock. That's probably the cheapest route to take because of shipping charges. For linear rails, the cheapest place is on Ebay. Overseas, the deals are crazy and they can be bought in bundles, with bearings for all 3 axis starting at around $200.
