  • are you going to be coming to California anytime soon BBS Veer Ji?

  • Have u seen the video of all three brothers doing asa di vaar it comes on Sangat tv

  • did bhai mohinder singh ji teach anybody before they died

  • @singhguvi

He passed on his repertoire and diaries to me...

  • @bhaibaldeep you should post some vids of u playing jori

  • @singhguvi

There are few clips already available Ji...

  • Kohi gava ragi nathi nahi har har pija.......

  • LOVE the smile on ustaad ji's face while he is playing it is glowing with pride and joy a true artist in the Guru's darbar

  • Thankyou 'Bhaibaldeep' for a glimpse of this.

Is there any possibility that i could get the full recording of this anywhere?

  • I wonder if the Jawadhi people have it with them. I have the recordings that I made then but no time to do the needful for posting or sharing. In a few months when my condervatory project takes off - I will have someone do it. There isn't a lot but some interesting footage that will come out of my a/vlibrary.

  • okay, thanks alot.

  • That's insane!!!

    So much intensity of feeling

  • But I do not see any comparison between the two.

I am told that Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh Ji used to enjoy the Jori and Dhrupad-ang kirtan of Bhai Sahib Jwala Singh so much so that he would play his karra's along....

Both style are fine as long as they are done and sung well and with appropriate passion...

  • hahah mann u made my day hahahahahahahahahhaha i'll be laughing all day hahahahahahhahah

  • this tabla dude is just too worried about the ability he plays his tabla at... it's nice, but this dude is just looking for an audience and a crowd... Bhai Balbir smashed it tho lol

  • Just close your eyes and listen to it, and then you'll hear how good the jori and kirtan go together, just try it.

  • lol I can count the number of people who play jori on my hand, this art has nearly been lost, with the help of sant ji playing in the video and BBS who puts the videos on the internet, this art is not being lost.

This art was performed in front of ALL our living gurus, whats the difference now? Why do sikhs look for a way out when perserving something so beautiful?

  • no no... don't get me wrong this is awsome and amarjodh ur right, when u close ur eyes u see a different perspective or world even,

    thank u :)

  • sorry gurmi, i beg to differ with you, ive seen videos of when this tabla/jori player is singing aswel ! and it is at a raag darbar so theyr going to play the material with the kirtan!

  • can anyone tell me what a jori is?

  • Really Sad - someone thinks oneself (at least symbolically) as " khalsa-ki-fauj" and has to run around to understand what a jori is ... Well, best of luck in ur search. No offense, but somethings are more sad to know...so had to leave this comment.

  • ok first of alll i kno im a part of khalsa ki fauj and 2nd of all even guru gobind singh ji learnt from others young and old....if ur a part of the khalsa tht doesnt nessarily mewan u kno everything okk....so there is not a porblem in askin a question since were humans and we dont know everything so dont give stupid responses

  • a jori is another name for a tabla

  • ok thnksss...but why is there another name for a tabla?

  • wow... u need to calm down... and khalsafauj is just a dude looking for an answer... u need to chill and it wud of just helped if u told him what a jori was...

  • Jori is not another name for the tabla.

Jori lit. means a couple - hence the confusion. In Gurbani Kirtan no tabla was played - only pakhawaj or mirdang and since the times of Guru Arjan, the Jori was added, which is noted as his gift.

The Jori is basically a pakhawaj cut into two. The tone and the tuning remains the same. Jori was called as the complete percussion instrument as all three styles could be played on it.

  • yeah and there are some bols that you can play with tabla which were very hard to play in phakvaj.

  • Which ones, for example?

  • i dont know my tabla teacher told me that when we were learning phkhavaj bols on tabla :/ i'll ask him this week.

  • oh dude i think it was something like some tabla bols are hard to play in phakhavaj .... yh that was it lol i think . ... :/...

  • its probably dhir dhir, they are playable, just harder due to the size of the jori, it is harder to get clarity in dhir dhir bols, but it can be done i have seen myself yogesh samsi play dhir dhir on a 6", maybe i'll ask him 2 play on my jori of 7" chattu one day.

  • Can sum1 please tell me if this is the shabad being sung from the Satguru Granth Sahib? Shabad is by Guru Ram Daas Ji in Raag Kaanraa on Pannaa 1315 of Satguru Granth Sahib Ji in Pauree:

sabh dhhiaavahu aadh sathae jugaadh sathae parathakh sathae sadhaa sadhaa sathae jan naanak dhaas dhasonaa ||5||

    Is that it?

  • Yes.

  • amazing jori...does anybody know wat the shabad from the sri guru granth sahib is being sung? anything would be helpful

  • loll WAHEGURU concentrate on the baani too not just the jori

  • You are right veer ji thank you for reminding me that Gurbaani always comes first :)

  • The end tihai puts a smile on your face

  • where can we get the full video from? i love this

  • KHUSHIYAAN DA JAKAARAA GAJAAWEY SO FATEH PAAWEY NIHAAL HO JAAWEY..SAT SIRI AKAAALO!!GURBAR AKAAALO!!! Dhan Dhan Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Maharaaj, Dhan Dhan Baba Bidhi Chand Sahib Ji Maharaaj.. Shri Maan Bhai Balbir Singh Ji and his late 3 brothers (incl Bhai Mohinderjit Singh Ji above) were the Hazoori Raagis of Dal Baba Bidhi Chand Sahib Ji (before he took the sewa in Shri Harmandar Sahib Ji)...

  • Small correction: Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji not Bhai Mohinderjit Singh Ji..sorry, mistakenly typed.

  • amazing! I love the youthfulness in his playing..its really refreshing..

  • mazza agaya

  • i am taken for words!!!!

  • This is purely magnificent, there are so many gems in the panth and so much worth fighting for!

  • Should we not make his jeevan more readily available to the public as not many people are aware of this personality. Putting aside your personal material of course but just basic details. what do you think? maybe on your site or even a site dedicated to BAST

  • Yes, of course.

But how much can I attempt alone?

Hopefully, once the Anad Foundation has enough staff and I can have more time...

  • I think with these videos, the sangat can now understand how much you have already done to date.

Im sure amongst the many ill wishers, you have many supporters too.

  • How long did you study with BMS for?

  • Well, I knew him for about 7 years. He was my elder gurbhai, so he very kindly shared a lot of compositions. But of ourse his repertoire was limited. In the last two years before he passed away, he was learning composition from me that I had studied from Bhai AST. He was very enthused by looking in to the diaries from the 1930's when Bhai AST taught Bhai Gurcharan Singh, my other granduncle.

  • Great to see Bhai the brothers at work. Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji was always a joy to see.

I see you've cloned his Taal Gunhs to the T

Will you be posting anything of BASTJ? Though he was very old i assume in the time you were collecting most of this work.

  • Sadly, my attempts to get the Doordarshan people to film Bhai AST were delayed and he passed away by the time the approvals came. I bought my first camera in 1996, a year after Arjan Singh Pitaji had passed. I have his audios, fascinating stuff believe you me, I think about 5 hours of teaching pakhawaj, history, poetry, etc. He is the one who built my spine. I could transcend my grandfathers generation through him, else my perspective would have been not as it is now and the revival inept...

  • Bhai Arjan Singh Tarangar - 1900-1995 AD.

    Village Bhullar, Taran Taran, Punjab.

  • who was he?is there any videos of him?

  • There are no videos of him, sadly.

    Audios yes.

A student of Ustad Harnam Singh of Jammu (erstwhile princely state), he was considered as one of the greatest exponents of percussion. He continued to play until 1950's.

  • ok.was he the same bhai ji who also knew art of sword and his two sons were in to swimming and hockey.if yes how can ifind some audios of him.thanks

  • Both his sons are former National champions and Chief swimming coaches.

Bhai AST was a prolific swimmer himself.

His audios are with me and not yet made available but if you are passing by New Delhi you can hear excerpts.
