  • A wonderful blend of brilliant finger-picking guitar and a great voice.

  • If you need to tune the guitar so special then it is all a lie. If "God" can't make standard guitar tuning sound that way, then you have not latched on to god at all... but wishful thinking.

  • I'm sorry... but the meaning of this song is a made up story. It causes many people to die around the world. I wish you would wake up.

  • Epic wedding song! I've got a rock wedding song on my profile if you'd like to check it out.

  • This song is based on the Bible verses regarding marriage. Not only is this song the ultimate wedding song but it is spiritual. It is one of the most perfect songs ever written.

  • @Jimmy110459

I agree and thanks for your thoughts.

    :-)

  • @Jimmy110459 I disagree.

  • @thebp9999 .......if you have ever read the Bible I think you would tend to agree.

  • @Jimmy110459 you are a big retarded fag

  • Thanks for posting, one of the greatest songs ever written!

  • my brother's fiance asked me to play this at their wedding... this is the first time i have heard of this song... and the wedding is in 2 weeks!!!! ahhh!!! i didn't know the guitar was like this! i am freaking out.

  • I'm a lot older and more cynical (thirty-five years older and two marriages later) than I was the first time I heard this song, but it STILL never fails to give me chills. Sigh. Other posters are right: it's THE wedding song.

  • Amazing song. Hope I get to see him on one of his tours.

  • This is the song my parents played at their wedding. My mom told me the name of the song and said I should look it up sometime. This song is so beautiful and to know my parents became man and wife to this song warms my heart.

  • Makes me teary eyed. I never knew until yesterday that this was the processional song at my parents wedding in 1977. I never even heard this before. It just makes me so sad because they were divorced in '89. And my mom passed away a few years ago. If only they could have found a way to be as happy as they were when they met. =(

  • this was played at our wedding in 1990 and my 3 sisters followed suit in 2004, 2006 and 2010.

  • There is love......

    Sigh....

  • played this at our wedding almost 23 years ago and still very happily together

  • Thank You, I love this song.

  • How can anyone listen to this song and not get choked up? Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!

  • For me that is the most tender and loving song.

  • "The Wedding Song" and "Danny's Song" are the prettiest songs in popular music.

  • I love this song it was played at WEDDING LAST DECEMBER 18TH.....WOW HOW THE FIRST YEAR HAS WENT FAST....I LOVE YOU CHRISTOPHER

  • This song still kills me after over 30 years of being divorced to a woman I still love-Bretta Milner

  • Simply one of the most beautiful songs ever penned to paper. Thanks, I'm all teared up now. LoL

  • Was there a wedding in the late 60's/early 70's that did not have this song played? It has always been one of my favorites and touches my emotions every time I hear it. Thanks!

  • I want the song We Are Siamese If You Please to be played at my wedding. I always get this song confused with that one from Lady And The Tramp, like the Madonna/Whore Complex so troublesome to so many marriages. Live in Nevada, where whores are cheap and legal. Ride a hooker, save a marriage.

  • Simply one of the finest songs of the 20th century!

  • When my wife and I were planning our wedding, I had a hands-off approach. She knew what she wanted, and I was fine with that. The only request I made was this song be played during the ceremony. The sound guy accidentally cut it short. Life can be funny:)

  • man this is beautiful i think he wrote it too

  • Love it! Was lucky enough to sing this at my sister's wedding. Thank you for sharing!

  • @KimandLexie

    You're welcome !

    :-)

  • @KimandLexie did you miss the part where he sings "Well a man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home They shall travel on to where the two shall be as one." he is not singing about queer weddings

  • @libsemik I never said the singing or words were for a "queer wedding". Not quite sure where that came from, although I have sang at "Straight" and :"Queer" weddings. People are people-if they love each other and want to make a committment, who makes us a higher power to say they can't. Your comment was very un-necessary. I am fully aware of the words, remember?? I sang it for my "straight" sisters wedding. Couldn't you have just accepted the compliment and moved on?????

  • @KimandLexie The basis of this song is "very necessary" and I'm not talking about Paul stitching together scriptural truth w/o understanding & singing it for a guy (Peter) who would w/in 2 years molest a 14 year old and divorce his wife. The essence of these lyrics proceeds music. God clearly condemns the dishonorable passions of queers and those who applaud them. It's "two or three who gather in Christ"( Matt 18:15-20). not in queerness. How does Romans ch1 present God,Wrath, queer? Agree?

  • @libsemik And just because my e-mail address says Kim and Lexie, please do not foolishly assume that it is about two women. Lexie is my puppy. Please find better ways to spend your time.

  • Awesome song!!! My daughter will love this for her upcoming nuptials...

  • This is such a beautifull song, I love it.

  • three our of rheiry 31di

  • This song is bittersweet. We had it sung at our wedding. Then 29 years later - he walked out without much of an explanation. That was 3 years ago and it still hurts so much....

  • This is the ultimate wedding song. I love this and I have and will. If I ever got married this is the song I would have my Uncle sing in the church. I finally found it. Awesome!

  • @TheAlinaLopez

Yes it IS the ultimate wedding song and many people have had it sung at their weddings.

    :-) Chuck S

  • I've never married and maybe never have loved but I still believe.

  • This song was sang by my future sister-in-law at our wedding at my request, 21 years ago when we were married in the High Sierra Mountains in an open camp ground. Nature, friends and this song made for a beautiful ceremony and wonderful memories.

  • This song is so beautiful. A friend sung it at our wedding and I've been singing it for others' weddings ever since. My father performed the ceremony for us and this song made him choke back tears. This song will always bring back special memories for all involved in your wedding. God Bless and thanks for the special memories.

  • @MamaOT305,

    The pleasure is mine !

    :-)

  • You peole that upload these memories are so wonderful. Thank you. wjk

  • @resi43,

You are welcome and I appreciate your kind comment.

    :-) Chuck

  • The song will stand forever and so will they......The fact that Paul wrote this for peter when he got married and then felt that this song was so strong in meaning that he gave away the rights to the song and gave it public domain.....an awesome man, awesome sound and awesome group of amazing individuals

  • A more poignant song, I've not heard. Thanks for posting.

  • Check out the The Wedding Song - By My Side

  • My Father sang this song with a very deep bass voice. It brings back many memories of him singing this song. He also did Ave Maria at weddings as well. He is gone now, but can still picture him singing this vividly!

  • im 18, and i know its too early for me to think about marriage but one thing! i love this song and i this to be played on our wedding day! :)

  • @ klyJeL,

    That is great.

Many people have had this song played at their weddings

  • @klyJeL

Whatever your circumstance, this is a fine sentiment, and a pleasing song.

  • @klyJeL My parents had it at theirs. It's one of my mother's favorites.

  • This is such a beautiful song,

  • We had this song at our wedding. It is SOoooooooo pretty!

  • This was sung at our wedding 35 years ago. It seems like yesterday.

  • I am singing this song at my uncles wedding with my grandfather who will also be playing the guitar. I absolutly love this song!!!!!

  • THIS WAS THE SONG AT OUR WEDDING.. THE WOMAN OF MY LIFE.. 25 YEARS AND STRONG!!

  • I have loved this song since I was a little girl. I went to a wedding many years ago as a teenager and it was played. When I got married, I had this song sung at my wedding. I still love it and enjoy watching the wedding video still today.

  • I grew up on the 25th Anniversary Concert video, from which I BELIEVE this particular recording came. This song, and the others on that video, have left permanent marks on me, and will be a part of the musical heritage I hope to pass on to my own children someday, should heaven favor me with any.

  • This was sung on my wedding day..I love this song...

  • Don't mention Dr. Phil and Paul Stookey in the same breath. In fact, refrain from mentioning Dr Phil at all!

  • I love this. thanks a million for sharing

  • @pretty312,

You're welcome and I am happy that you liked it!

  • This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard. I remember this song at my wedding. I was standing there by my future husband, thinking how blessed I am. I remember turning to him and saying how much I loved him. Unfortunately 20 years later we were divorced. But this song has truely touched me tonight.

  • Being that same sex marriage has been legalized in New York State, some couples would have this played at those ceremonies. Problem is this, though; Lyrically, this works best for an opposite sex marriage. Oh well...

  • @kja427 I do agree that lyrically, those words would not be appropriate, but they could be changed to accomodate any situation. It still makes me sad that so many people just don't get it. Who are we to judge? Thank you so much for your comment, I appreciate an intellegent one.

  • This was my wedding song, We were married in 1980 for 28 years until he passed away in 2008. It still touches me.I miss you David.....

  • thumbs up if he looks like dr phil,...

  • I just want to say thanks for taking the time to share these wonderful memories with us. I know posting anything can be difficult and time-consuming, the rewards often do not coincide with the work. I love PP&M, have raised my kids and now my grandchildren listening to their message of peace and love. It's people like you who make this possible. Again, thank you.

  • @ jehukjehe,

I appreciate your kind words and thoughts.

It has been a great pleasure to see so many people enjoy these old videos.

  • @jehukjehe there are no words to express my feelings for this song ,love --- miss you mary !! we all do !!

  • @jehukjehe

I am very late in posting a response to your comment, but I am glad to be of service and it warms my heart to see so many people enjoy this beautiful song.

  • I sang this at my son's wedding just a few years ago. Great song.

  • this was the song we chose to go down the aisle to when we were married. 6/25/11 it will be 33 years!!! we had a duet play/sing the song at our wedding.

  • This a song for the ages. When we are dust it will be heard.

  • This was my wedding song! We are still married 28 years later.

  • What the hell is my old second hour math teacher doing up on that stage ??

  • This was played at my and about 5 billion other weddings-what a tribute that (my) the marriage did not last, but the song endures. If (back then) someone had set us both down and besides the pretty tune and lyrics- shared the true reason for a marriage, bla bla-who knows? We probbly would have shut them out,but possibly we just might have listened....That was years ago-but still love the song-and what a beautiful voice!

  • If I had the amount of talent that this man does in his pinkie.... I would have a significantly larger amount of talent.

  • pla it at aa slower pace heavy bass string kik

  • Wow....... this is SUCH a beautiful song. It brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. Now, I must say that PP&M were a HUGE part of my childhood. And though I'm still very young (I'm in highschool) I know I want this song played at my wedding, and any kind of PP&M at my funeral. Each one of the trio is incredibly gifted. I miss Mary beyond words.

  • The guitar used here was designed by Gordon Bok in the 1960's and made by Nikos Apollonio in Maine, US.

More info on Facebook --Apollo Stringed Instruments

  • @ guittern,

    Interesting.

    Thanks for the info !

  • Noel Paul wrote this for the wedding of Peter Yarrow and his wife. He refused to sing it in public until Peter requested it @ a 1971 concert. Paul created a foundation to receive and distribute the royalties of the “Wedding Song” to charity. He chose the name Public Domain Foundation (PDF), to signify that all revenues from the “Wedding Song” were, in effect, public funds to be channeled to the public good.

  • Explain why the 7 year itch comes early??????

  • This was my parents wedding song, and someday, it will be mine too.

  • I knew and played with Peter, Paul, and Mary, but for a period they had broken up and were making their own solo records. This song came out on an Album titled simply 'Paul'

  • Today is my mom and dad's 29th wedding anniversary, this was one of the songs that was played at their wedding and it has been tradition to play this ever since they got married.

I have been around for 18 of their past years together, and I am so happy for them.

  • What a talent.

  • I had this song play at my wedding <3

  • hÊh_ÃnYòNÈ_wÅÑÑÂ_chÄt_wíth_mè_í_féÈl_sõ_loNElY_tÕÐåY▲

  • this song was my parent's wedding song! so happy for them!

  • Oh wait, I believe I can answer my own question: it appears to be an unusually-shaped 12 string, in a lowered tuning.

  • What the hell instrument is he playing?

  • @iluvj50 Giannini Craviola 12 string guitar

  • Does anyone has more these videos from this concert? I've already got Right Field, Don't go down to the quarry, and perhaps one more... But I would like to have the one where Paul is bringing the contrabass (I think) and is smiling along the way to Peter and Mary. This scene is shown in the video Carry It On, and I would like to have the whole video... Or at least some other videos from this concert.... So, if anyone has it, please upload it?

  • What a beautiful song ... what inspiration this man must have had to write these

lyrics...and the tune my gosh its incredible.

  • I'll be singing this song at a wedding next month!! :)

I'm hoping that my boyfriend will be up for joining in on guitar and vocals, cuz us singing and playing guitar together is just amazing!! :)

  • This was our wedding song but for the life of me I couldn't remember which song we used until I heard it years later. John played it for our 30th anniversary when he proposed to me and gave the engagement ring we had never been able to afford.

  • I know exactly what you are saying.

It's get just that thrill of truth inside it, that it just has to touch your heart..

at least if your sensible to to the soul of Gods creation..

What a precious song this is!!

    :-)))

  • What a great song!

accidently found it while searching for music for a wedding video.

    absolutely great song!

  • @SIXXION ,

I am glad you found it.

To this day, it still brings tears to my eyes.

If you are getting married, then I wish the best for you !

  • My husband and I had this in our wedding in May of 1982. One of the 2 Ministers who married us was the Sr Minister of the fairly large suburban Methodist Church where our families attended and we met. The other a former Methodist by then a Pastor of a Non-Denominational church from another city both were close family friends. The interesting thing to me was that the Minister had to first approve the song prior to allowing us to have it performed by a friend who is a professional opera singer.

  • This was my mom and dad's 25th wedding anniversery song, we played it again when they renewed for their 50th, 2 months before my dad passed away. It always brings a tear to my eyes.

  • @cschoon1213 Amen. When I hear this song I think of 1 Corinthians 13 the Greatest is Love.

  • @BBQFanNo1 you are correct , and much more than just that, the entire song is totally Biblical.

  • Lovely song! I want to play it at my wedding in 3 weeks, how can i download it please. Thank you.

  • Beautiful song, one of our favorite and a classic. We just uploaded what we consider to be some of The best new Wedding Songs & Marriage Quotations. Let me know if you agree or not!

  • a classic is a classic and this is definitely a classic.

  • This song is so beautiful. I used to hear it played on the radio all the time back in the summer of 1977. What a wonderful experience to which it contributed in my life at a time of great emotional pain followed by peace and fellowship with others. It appeared in my life at just the right time. Yes, there is love.

  • My dad and my (now late) aunt sang this song for my wedding in 1996 and I have never forgotten it. I will cherish this song forever. It's always been a favorite because my dad used to sing it just to sing it. Paul Stookey sure knew what he was doing when he wrote this wonderful song!

  • The 12-string is a custom made model, by Nick Apollonio. It's name is Benjamin and was a gift to Noel (Paul) Stookey from his wife Betty. The Wedding Song was originally written on another Apollonio 12-string, named Sebastian which subsequently became damaged and was unplayable for many years until about 2 years ago when Nick re-built it for Noel. There is also a song to the guitar itself, aptly named "Sebastian".

  • Does anyone know what make and model 12-string he's playing here?

  • Awesome tune.... PP&M rocked.

  • Love for my wife and my 2 month old son brought me to this page. I remember seeing Peter, Paul, and Mary in the summer of '93 and by the fall, I opened for the likes of Paul Stookey and others like Gordon Lightfoot. I am now long since out of the loop, but I will remember them forever, and this song; which was played by a friend at my wedding to my wonderful wife, Aree.

  • One of the best songs ever written............ Amen

  • beautiful song indeed!

  • This is a classic

  • @cschoon1213

if you speak to god..... you are praying

if god speaks to you... you are insane.

or as old german chancellor helmut schmidt said:

if i should ever have a vison, i would contact my doctor immediately:-)

(just an interjection which you can leave unanswered as i will not appear here agein

  • You know what amazes me?

I have 67 videos uploaded of old Peter Paul and Mary videos and of the perhaps hundreds of comments I have received, I have only gotten 3 negative comments that I recall. I get comments every day and virtually none of them are negative. There are a lot of wonderful people out there who love good music!

  • @cschoon1213 this song is fab, it will never go out of style! that's paul stookie at his finest! :)

  • @cschoon1213 I saw them 10 times. they were so ahead of their time. They talked about peace in 1960. They talked about drug reform in 1967. They talked about bullying in 1990. RIP Mary. Carry on guys.

  • @cschoon1213 A M E N !

  • @cschoon1213

Is there anyway to send me the mp3 of this song? I want to play it at my wedding on 5 March and cannot find it anywhere and I'm not too clued up on how to download etc...

  • @cschoon1213 :

Please count me among the lovers of great Folk music...actually just Great Music. This is the song I heard when my lovely spouse and I renewed our vows after 26 years.

    some things are immortal.

  • @cschoon1213 Thanks for the uploads .... I 'grew up' with PP&M in the 60's and 70's. I miss them.

  • @ rimvisions,

    You are quite welcome !

    My pleasure. :-)

  • @cschoon1213 correct !!

  • there's a little bit the same from the song "rhymes and reason" by john denver..

  • It is Divine, somehow you know don't you? And people say "God doesn't talk to me!" listen to this.

  • It would be nice to personally experience this period of life described in the song.

  • Comment removed

  • What's best about the Christianity of Mr. Stookey is that it reflects Jesus' real intent - to stand up for the oppressed - even victims of religious oppression - and to appeal to reason and compassion when confronted with challenging issues. Which is why he supports marriage for gays and lesbians, gun control, Greenpeace and many other humanitarian efforts that organized religion is unfortunately completely at odds with.

  • @vitoroppo Right On!

  • @Houdini774: So glad you get it!

  • Wow! How many weddings did we go to where this song was played? Definitely more than I can remember!

  • To me, the music is like the harmony that I feel exuding from life here in Maine. Mr Stookey is a talented man, even more interesting if you ever get to meet him. My wife and I celebrate our vows with this music playing in the background.

  • Beautiful....divinely inspired indeed...some of the lyrics come from the Bible...didn't realize that Paul had become a Christian in the late 60's and has been part of a ministry...should have figured that out...I see he and Peter will be in concert nearby in the Spring...have to get me some tickets!

  • 30 years ago - at our wedding a good friend of ours had played this song, we will always be blessed by this song - Thank You Paul Stookey for this song not just for us but to ALL who have played this at their weddings...to this date I still listen to it and brings tears to my eyes.

  • 30 years ago - at our wedding a good friend of ours had played this song, we will always be blessed by this song - Thank You Paul Stookey for this song not just for us but to ALL who have played this at their weddings...to this date I still listen to it and brings tears to my eyes.

  • We are having this in our wedding on 01.01.11! My parents also had it in their wedding in 1972. It is timeless and beautiful!

  • @ gsmith074,

    That is marvelous!

    Congratulations to you.

  • @gsmith074 - congratulations and best wishes always! it's great to be able to select such a memorable, yet easily remembered date such as 1/1/11!! our niece recently got married on 10/10/10 at 10am if you can believe that!!! LOL

  • @gsmith074 - I love the date of your wedding. I know a couple married on 7-7-77. I'm not superstitious, but that's cool.

  • @gsmith074 May both of you live happily ever after.

  • @gsmith074 Warmest congratulations! May you both live happily ever after.

  • @gsmith074 We had this in our wedding as well back in 1993. I worked hard getting this right when I sung it during our wedding. There would be no way I could sing this live; hehe I taped it and had the sound guy play it as a surprise for my wife!! She didn't have a clue what was happening! She knew what was next; but, she didn't in all actuality!! Best to you!!

  • This song reminds me of Peggy, we were married fifty years ago this year. She has been out of my life for over thirty years. She died twenty years ago , ten years into our divorce but my love still lives on.

  • there is love:) reminds me of my best friend bean. and of course my hub-a- roni !

  • I sang this to my wife at our wedding. The nost beautiful song ever sang!!

  • When was this broadcast?

  • Well the lady is still not replaced and will probably never will nr. Such a terrible happening in a man's life but still no woman.

  • May 20, 1989 My wedding day....standing in back of the Church, waiting to walk down the isle and this song was being sung. Thank you, Peter, Paul and Mary.

  • Such a beautiful day, For a wedding!!! they say a son is a son till he takes a wife, a daughter a daughters for the rest of her life. My son is getting married in a week.

I am blessed for his wife to be is a blessing in the family.

  • It was also the final song at my wedding in 1976. After 6 years of marriage I went astray and lost the woman that I will always love. This song will always remind me of what I had and lost. For Bretta Milner.

  • @ capttaintex, I hold it true, what'er befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.

    ~~~ Alfred Lord Tennyson
    In Memoriam:27
    1850
    My heart goes out to you.
    ~~~ Chuck

  • @cschoon1213 Sorry to hear that capttainex. Maybe you will get back together someday. It has been said that our parent's generation - the ones who fought WW2 was the greatest generation. And that may be true. They certainly knew how to build things. But their kids- our - generation knew how to write songs. Someone here wrote that Mary Travers is teaching the angels to write folk music. I certainly hope so.

  • @capttaintex Hang in there my friend.......For tomorrow will bring us another day.Think positive & you'll be ok. Pilot53

    Australia

  • @capttaintex Sorry but hopefully you have or had found another love to light your life

  • @capttaintex bless you

  • @capttaintex God bless you

  • @capttaintex

This was the final song at my wedding in 1978, we just had our 33rd anniversary. We're more in love than ever.

  • @jaydubalso - Congratulations to you both. To wax philosophical, love is why we're here. Love makes life (with all its trials and tribulations) worthwhile. My husband and I hit our Silver Anniversary this year. We will celebrate with our two beautiful, and very much loved, children. Best Wishes to You Always.

  • @capttaintex Sometimes the 7-year-itch arrives early.
