Laying down a really funky groove there! That 8-string has such a full and rich sound, but not too full that it sounds cluttered and muddy. I'd like to get an 8-string bass as my next music-related purchase.
I am so sorry to hear of your passing, just a week before you passed on, I was seriously considering ordering this bass, just for the unique idea and amazing sound....R.I.P.
i have an 8 string too and i think its got some of the sickest sounds. unfortunantyl one of my higher octave strings snapped when i was trying to give it this funky tuning and i have no idea where to get a set of 8 strings
imagine how that would sound with a piezo bridge! Currently making an 8 string semi-hollowbody bass in woodshop class. hope it is half as good as this beast!!
i strung my bass as a piccolo and used an octave pedal and it didnt work as well as you might think, most octavers dont track that well, and you cant play chords and drone stuff which would sound wicked cool with an actual 8. But i suppose it worked ok.
I was at the local music store, and I managed to get a 3 octave sound out of an 8 string bass. I split the signal with a pre-amp, and sent one to an octave pedal that dropped it an octave, and the other to a whammy pedal, and put that up an octave, and I ran the two outputs to 2 different amps. yea...it sounded fucking wicked!!!! lol.
sounds really good, but how would you apply a 8+ string bass to any other music other than solos and funk or jazz? I'd kinda like to use one, but I'm not sure how well it'd sound with metal or rock.
think Rush, how sick would an 8 string be? metal, you could try some distortion for a fatter rhythm (maybe have one distorted line and mix it with a clean line to preserve the bass) or just dont hit/remove the E and A harmony strings. for rock it would totally be worth it
Hey I went downstairs in the studio and played that groove as soon as I heard it...lmao..That mite be the grooviest simple groove ever!!!!...David you are the shit....
Start off by looking at Roscoe Basses and a few other luthier videos right here in YouTube. If you still want to do this, take some woodworking classes at school then take a bass or guitar building class if available. Start a parts bass project or practice fixing up a very inexpensive bass. Level the frets, do a setup job or just upgrade Pups and EQ. Then try to duplicate a bass with inexpensive wood/parts. This will take some cash but you will gain experience. Hope this helps.
That is one sweeeet sounding bass. Nicely done!

You could probably just replace it with a regular guitar string.
I'm not sure if you can just buy one string, though.
DanceSeejDance 2 years ago
Some companies do sell single strings but it's ultimately cheaper to buy a set, plus you have extra strings and some different gauges to work with.

its tuned the same as normal, but after every bass string there's a normal electric guitar string, thats 1 octave higher.

Couldn't you get an octaver thing to get the same sound?
Tengent 3 years ago
Hehe. Probably.
ACUTEFAILURE 3 years ago
It wouldn't be perfect, but you could get close enough for no one to tell the difference.
fingerboy18 3 years ago
Yeah, but I'd rather pay $100 to get an octaver than $400+ for a new bass.

Same here.

Octavers have a problem with chords... they just don't like em at all and start wavering, turning on and off and generally malfunctioning.

nice. really liking the dark stars. can u slap or use a pick on a 8 string?
JordanFrerichs 3 years ago
The setup is more for finger-style but Yes. Just stay away from the pickups and don't dig in too much when slapping.
