  • @HHSW99HC I was in 8th Grade the kid that got 130 in practice was a sr he was 19. He played number 1 singles for us and lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs 0-6, 7-6, 5-7 to the kid that won state that year

  • how fast was he serving in this video?

  • the racquet looks weightless when he swings.. you can barely see it

  • Comment removed

  • nice

  • ROX

  • The number 2 singles player my Jr year in high school served just like Roddick but it was around 110mph not 135 -145 mph but there was a kid when i was in 8th grade that got 130 mph.

  • @thekylleroberts 8th grade 130mph? No way

  • @thekylleroberts

Was that kid's name Mirco CroCop?

  • Roddick's got a huge lower back!

  • cool stuff

  • should he really be practicing his serves?

  • @365to173repubsPWNED haha, i know right. he needs to work on his ground strokes

  • 1:14. In fast motion.. ButterFLY!

  • Damn thats one brave butterfly 1:41

  • can you see the mark on the ground as the ball bounces off the court?

  • FYB 4Ever

  • federer has more aces against roddick, because his return is better, not because his serve is better

  • Wonder what the mph was on those super accurate serves? Maybe 100mph!

  • Those serves are so damn sexy.

  • It's weird how tennis players don't look like their in great shape and yet really are. I mean, they don't look like their in bad shape or anything, but you wouldn't look at one of them shirtless and immediately think athlete.

  • @KovieMatt Andy isn't the fastest player, he is more muscle bulk. He is still a great athlete but just in a differnet way then a Federer or a Nadal. He has heavier shots then a Federer or Nadal as well, and before all of you jump on me for saying that I am saying heavier (Not faster) shots then Federer or Nadal which means there is more weight on them.

  • @DillonSinghBasi For the most part I agree. Roddick (6'2" 195) isn't all that much heavier than Nadal (6'1" 187) or Fed (6'1" 186) and I would say Nadal has a bigger upper body (just look at him). I think a lot of it has to do with how you get momentum behind you. Look at HOW Roddick serves, it just LOOKS different from everyone else, very robotic like.

And while Roddick serves faster/"heavier" than Fed, believe it or not, Fed gets more aces. It's like real estate, location location location ;)

  • @KovieMatt For real dude, location is really important when it comes to serving. But I have too say, power is still more important. I'm not going to say whose serve is better, but although Fed gets more aces, people miss more returns off of Andy's serve and if that fails it serves as an easy set up for a winner for Andy's next shot!! :)

  • @DillonSinghBasi I'd have to say location is more important. Now, obviously power is still important (Nadal added 10mph to his serve and look what happened!), but if the location isn't good, it's no harder for most pros to return a 115 vs. a 135. However, if you can place a 135 just as well as a 115, then it becomes lethal. I think location is more important because you can do it far more often. Roddick can't blast his 140s all night long, that would wear him out.

  • so consistent, fast too!!!

  • any1 kno sumplace in southern cali where yu can measure the speed of your serve? im not a pro player but im curious to see how fast i hit

  • @emoboynumber13 Your speed really isnt that important. A well placed 100 mph serve with nice moment is by far better than a 130 mph serve with no movement and bad placement. Federer and Sampras have "good serves" because they're well placed and could move in a hundred different directions. Roddicks first serve is really just fast. It looks cool to serve 145, but TBH id rather have Sampras' or Federers' 100-120 mph service game.

  • @neosquid i can already place my serves fairly well with a 8/10 consistancy

  • @neosquid sampras can hit 130++ constantly...c the wimbledon match which he lost to federer so many 130++ serve

  • @neosquid The guy just wanted to know where a place was, he didn't want a whole damn speech about something unrelated to his question.

  • i can do roddicks motion perfectly but you have to have a strong back to twist like he does :/

  • Hes my favorite player, I look up to him.

  • LOL, a butterflies crosses the court @ 1:41...

  • @XxJohnyNguyenxX haha amazing awareness

  • @XxJohnyNguyenxX it was flying away from his serve...

  • @XxJohnyNguyenxX lucky butterfly not to be hit by roddicks bullets xD

  • Hands down the greatest serve on the planet, in my opinion. This technique allows Andy (someone of relatively normal stature 6'2") to reach amazing serve speeds and have a high serve %. It's just so efficient... there's no wasted energy. If Isaac Newton were a tennis player, he would be proud.

  • ***** :P

  • because they are doing spin serves instead of flat serves

  • why do pros toss the ball up at the side and not right in front?

  • it allows them to get shoulder rotation

  • @maydengarNSBHS

they get more shoulder rotation and have more torque resulting in more power

  • Rodick is the nearly man... As long as there is a Federer or Nadal in tennis, Roddick will always come up short.

  • Roddick just beat nadal in miami.

  • wth came off the ball at 1:30!?

  • fuzz bro

  • yet it is still pretty accurate

  • one needs to think why people stress spelling. words are metadata for things around us. don't get too carried away about spelling.

  • I used to do a full circle serve, but my coach convinced me to skip the circle and just bring the racquet back. I didn't believe in it at first until I saw Roddick do it

  • yup, same for me, very explosive motion it is

  • look at all the fuzz the ball loses with his serve. 1:30

  • jw, cuz i know andy's mixing up his serve alot more this year, which is good for him, but what happened to the 140s, 145s? I havent seen him serve past 139 all year? I'm just wondering what happened to the big heater, cuz its good to mix up the serve like he is, but it would be nice to have that big heater in his back pocket when he needs it.

  • He hit a few in wimbledon that were 140's

  • to hit the big serves takes more energy than the normal ones so if its return its hard to have energy to play rest of point and even if he wins aces alot with it its more risky therefore first serve percentage will go down. also he needs energy to break the opponents serves aswell :D

  • Or, you can exploit your energy better.

Roddick was served a 130mph first ball in the 30th game of the fifth set at Wimbledon when he faced Federer.. I think he can serve hard for long.

He look robotic because of short backswing, but he's very very fluent and coordinated in fact. He does exploit his energy considerably betetr than most pros.

  • Bear in mind that I respect him very much as a consistent top tennis player, who is a powerhouse to be reckon with.

  • thank you but u must have misunderstood that i did not mean there is somthing wrong with your analysis im just saying my opinion that i prefer roddicks serve

  • Awesome! By the way, I think Any has won all of our hearts at Wimbledon.

  • Respectfully, this rhetorical question runs on the premise that the fastest serve is somehow the best serve. But that isn't true. Tanner, Philippoussis, Ruseski, were the Roddicks of their days, but they lost plenty of times to better players with weaker (but better) serves: Mac, Federer, and Rafter. So while my critique on the aesthetics of Andy's serve is independent of its utility, his service remains unpleasing to me, and the fact that it is the biggest does not really refute my critique.

  • your wrong andy roddick aim's for the body which is known as a "body serve" federer goes for accuracy, for me i prefer a.rodd's servise.

  • Solid96snake, I think you should first do your best not to misspell 3 words in a short sentence, that tends to detract from your comment's credibility. Secondly, there's nothing wrong about what I prefer anymore than it is "wrong" for you to "prefer a.rodd's servise."

  • Theres nothing wrong with me making mistake's mayby my English isn't as good as your's sorry. But i never, ever, never, ever, never said that there is somthing wrong with what you PREFER nahh i "prefer a.rodd's servise" more got a problem? :(

  • I don't have a problem with your English if it isn't your first language, I apologize. English is my second language, incidentally. In any case, I have no problem with your preferring Roddick's serve at all. I simply disliked the fact that you called my analysis of whether Roddick's serve being the biggest therefore makes it the best "wrong." Although I suspect this is getting too lengthy and complicated here, as I respectfully suspect you don't really grasp my arguments.

  • He refute your claim that Roddick's serve wasn't "accurate" like Federer's. Also, you're on youtube, so don't criticize grammar. Its not like people spellcheck comments.

  • Confusedbanatt, I'm not sure how to respond to your comment. It's not clear that people who comment on Youtube should entirely dispense with spelling things correctly, and I think that issue has been resolved. See thread below. Also, please don't misquote me, I never once claimed "Roddick's serve wasn't accurate". So he couldn't possibly have refuted any such claim falsely attributed to me. The only persons on this particular thread who used "accuracy" or "accurate" are you and solid96snake.

  • Ah, this is true, my mistake.

Regardless, youtube is youtube and you can't hold people accountable for spelling. Seriously.

  • That's not the only problem, this is the WORLD WIDE web. Clearly English isn't the first language of everyone on that goes on the internet, so we should allow some leniency towards bad grammar and spelling. Of course, if they say something crazy like Roddick is a slow server, that's a whole different thing unless they got the words "fast" and "slow" mixed up because, like I said, English might not be their first language. Though there are a lot of idiots anyway that say exactly what they think.

  • @Oreoclan

Well, one should actually be grateful and appreciate when he is showed to be wrong or when a mistake one has made is pointed. I understand that some people tend to be insulted by those corrections and that most of those people around here think about argumentatio as a fight to win instead of a discussion were logic should stand out, however how could we not consider those behaviour being insults to human intelligence?

People can make mistakes, but at least they should learn from them.

  • Interesting... I forgot the n in argumentation.

  • sorry to sound like a dick, but you're still spelling SERVICE wrong. :) but agree with both points

  • hahaha thx for the tip but its ok i like misspelling things :)

  • Does it really matter what it looks like if he's the man with the fastest serve?

  • der gute

  • I wish I could serve like him ^^

  • Best set of videos i've subscribed to for learning tennis

  • best server in tennis for the last 5 years i would say. ATM he leads the tour with aces, service games won. he is 2nd on 2nd serve points won and is top 5 for 1st serve points won. he also gets 70% first serves in aswell.

i would normally say karlovic has the best serve - but take away his height and its shit - fluke genetics makes his serve great - not like andy's

  • disagree. When it really matters, his serve just isnt there in the way that sampras and fed can rely on it. When he is confident (and generally when it doesnt matter) then yeah I agree

  • no no no no no

    1) roddick's serve was the main reason he got to #1 and won a slam

    2) watch roddick v federer miami 2008, roddick served out of his mind - and even serve when it mattered.

    3) watch fed v rafa in AO 2009 - federer averaged less that 50% on his first serve - a match when he needed to serve well.

  • but can andy serve "out of his mind" all the time?

  • no, but then again, who can. sampras didn't always serve 'out of his mind' all the time, toherwise he would never lose

  • but he served well enough most of the time, but more importantly, when it really mattered it was there for him

  • i think because at first hes just rolling them in and hes gradually getting faster.

  • wow amazing

  • wow in the slow-mo, you can see the ball losing some of its felt on the bounce :|

  • andy's changed his service stance. his right foot used to come together with his left foot before making contact. are there any benefits from your foot position? perhaps better balance vs. better explosiveness? fed keeps his feet apart too. what do you think fyb?

  • well the one roddick is using gives him more explosiveness but less balace. the one for federer is more balance but less explosive, but the serve mostly comes from you not the stance

  • At this level their balance is definitely good enough with whichever stance they've chosen. For many beginners it's much much easier to teach a good serve with a platform stance (feet not together) because it helps ensure the player learns a proper core rotation.

  • When you kick serve and land on both feet instead of 1, you keep in more momentum than landing on 1. It also really depends on how you turn your body because correct follow thru allows max torque.

  • Its because roddick has an abriviated service action. His swing is short so he needs more of an explosive power from his legs to get over the top of the ball.

  • no,actually, roddicks serve is kind of long, if you look at the slow - mo in the video, you'll see that his raquet starts pointing up, then when he swings, he makes a full rotation with his risk and smashp the ball with nice control, i don't think you could have a hard serve like that with a short swing, no offense

  • its abriviated in that his take back is short. Most old school players like federer, agassi, sampras, phillopouses, laver etc have a longer take back. roddicks power is mostly from his leg drive. It only looks long because roddick is fairly tall.

  • amazing

  • is there one where there's a side view to the serve? I really would like to see how far forward to through the ball

  • Best service motion evar.

  • great videos as always, keep it up!
