@man012able ...that maybe true. But he did not write anything on wills first two CDs. and how would nas be able to write anything for will back in the mid eighties.. nas was not out back then.
I think it's funny that all these other rappers think of will as not a threat! Ha! He's the only rapper I have heard that does not say a curse in his raps. Every other rapper thinks they gotta rap about the "hood", talk about drugs and say a curse every other word. Will PROVES that you can make rap clean and still be beast at it. I love will <33 I would LOVE to meet him one day !! :]]
@shelly3905 Everything real, anybody that says Will Smith ain't Hip-Hop basically don't know shit about Hip-Hop. Dude came in the game with Biz Markie, Kool G Rap, Rakim, KRS, Ultramagnetic MC's...class of '86, my dude.
It seems to me Will Smith is looked upon as "the white boys rapper". This designation is ALL WRONG!!!!! like it or not Will is a legend man! Just because he didn't portray a gangster, say the word "Nigga" in his rhymes, or make his image about glorifying "The Hood" doesn't make him a sell out!!! Would it make you feel better if he pretended to be "Icecube" (ala NWA) rather than being himself? I wish you guys would "Stop glorifying Studio gangsters & appreciate honest & true talent!"
I love how people think that Will Smith is "real hip-hop." He made pop rap, just like Lil Wayne, Lil John, etc do today. Jazzy Jeff is a fucking beast on the turntables, though.
@wyrfxrssn what couldnt more realer about this song not only was Jazzy Jeff a beast on the turntables but back in 86 Fresh Prince was killing these MF's on the Mic this song prime example
Man he shouldn't of stopped rapping, yeah i know he still makes music every now and then, but its not the same, i know he made the more fun music now, but if would of been a full time mc, he would of been up there with kool g rap, i mean i know he is a hip hop legend still, but he could of been so much more.
When Fresh Prince came out it seems people forgot about his rhyming skills. But really he's the triple threat.....Actor, rapper, and a hell of a role model. I know he had a divorce with a kid but you know what.....how many of you are perfect???????

Will Smith is one of few people I know that are like a true Midas of our time. Everything he touches turns to gold. I believe there is nothing that he does that he doesn't excel at. I may have a man crush on him, I'm not sure. Dave Grohl is another one of my Midas picks.....
I don't know why people even comparing soulja and fp+dj. This here is RAP. Straight up. HipHops foundation.
Soulja is supposed to be hip hop but it's not, it doesnt move anyone. Lyrics are slack. Sounds like he spent 5 minutes writing his songs on a napkin in a diner. It's R+B / Pop but it sure as fuck is not rap.
It's not to be compared with rap. It's as differenet as country music.
This sounds way better than Soulja Lil Boy and all the gang! And it sounds like The Fresh Prince was just fooling around! Today's rap can't hold a candle to none of the old school! Peace to you all and all real hip hop heads all over!
@ChaseGuindon You have probably waited 2 yrs to get this answer. Better late than never, right? This song was built around the song, "I Can't Stop" by John Davis and the Monster Orchestra. The drum loop and the scratches. In fact here's the sample list: The first few secs. is sampled from "Jungle Love" by Steve Miller Band and also towards the end of the song "Groove to Get Down" by the T-Connection.
i SWEAR that on the cassette version of this song the sample at 4:47 is cued in at 4:35.. .. i remember buying the CD a few years ago and noticing a missing sample between 4:35 and 4:47
This is dope. My bro. had me peep this out and of course, needless to say... I wasn't disappointed. For all of today's generation who feels that today's cRap is Hip Hop, listen to Will Smith, Nas, Big L, Pac, Common, AZ, Talib Kweli, Slick Rick, KRS 1, Rakim, etc... then you can make a rational conclusion that these are the greatest MCs.

Saw them live back in the day... Had no idea the heights Will Smith would rise to. Usually I'd be all "meh" about celebs, but he did it the right way; he's more relevant then ever, and he comes off still as just a great, regular, nice guy.

You know what all you guys just need to calm down. I mean common Will Smith doesnt need his rapping any more to be a millionare, he's got movies. Thats why he changed so much. He's still a damn good rapper just changed with time. It's not that hard to understand.
This was a great track of the early hip hop scene. Wicked break beat, one of the tunes that influenced a generation of rave tracks throughout the UK rave scene, so big respect, saying that it does sound a very commercial these days.
Will Smith IS one of the worst rappers ever, but the Fresh Prince definitely had mad skills and could rock a crowd. Ever hear Live at Union Square? Either way, even though he's a big movie star, nothing can take away from his legacy as a rapper and someone who was down since way back win. Fuck street cred; it don't pay the rent. And he actually lives in Bel Air.
You fucking retard, they are the same person. When he was goin' by the name "Fresh Prince" he had mad joints, no doubt. But when he starting going by Will Smith, he changed up his flow and had corny-ass bubble-gum lyrics. I got no hate for the dude, though. he's mad talented and deserved to blow up in the movies. Still, I will never buy a Will Smith record. But I will listen to Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince til I die.
no fuckin duh ass whole then why the fuck did you say will smith is bad but fresh prince got skillz if u ask me ur the dumb ass just listen to ur fuckin self bitch, peace.
Learn how to spell "ass whole" and then get back to me. Have a great day!
Since you're not very smart, I'll explain things to you. The Fresh Prince phase of his career was very different than the Will Smith phase. It was really two different people. One was young, cocky, funny, and a hell of a rapper. The second was, smooth, a player, and bland as fuck. Either way, you're still a no-talent loser that can't even spell basic cuss words. I'm out!
bitch aint no mother fucker tryin to come out her and spell bitch i aint in school mother fucer i know its "hole" bitch.
sht il spel lik this if i fukn want 2!!!!
they still te same person and can rap the same. "ASS HOLE"...
And since you want me to spell so well I will.
You only fucking said "im out" because I said peace, brolaw. Get your own mother fucking line bitch. and enough abiout me spelling. "bland as fuck" i mean at least i can fuckin use cuss words right in a sentence! "Im out"
somewhere on this album, Will Smith got lost between stayin true to his roots (his early stuff) and going more commercial. How else do you explain a lyrical track like this and "Parent Just Dont Understand" being on the same album???? Obviously, Will chose to be more commercial and never had the street cred again
What are you talking about? "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" was not their first CD, "Rock the House" was, which contained "Girls Ain't Nothin' But Trouble", a track in the same vein of "Parents Just Don't Understand". You talk like once people try to please the masses, they aren't black anymore, they don't have "street cred". You don't need cred from anything when you have a nationally syndicated show, you're one of the richest people living and have over 8 #1 movies. Go listen to your 50 Cent...
first of all, i never mentioned anything about race. Second, I know they had an album before "he's The DJ, I'm The Rapper" and it was just pop fluff. Garbage. Will Smith has gone completely Hollywood and abandoned the very art form that gave him his start. He hasnt put out ANYTHING worth listening to in 15 years. Yeah, the guy is a megastar in Hollywood, but he lost any kind of respect or credibility to any true hip hop fan.
You may not have said anything about race but you implied it when you said he doesn't have any street cred. You're judging him on how popular he is, he work has had the same amount of coolness in every release (except for maybe "... And in This Corner" which flat out didn't work). Click on the video "So Fresh" in the side bar, just an example. He may have the best singles, but Will Smith has always wanted to do songs that are lightweight. He's not the kind of guy to flip the script.
i was thinking the same thing dog. Will is one of the most talented brothers out there. Every rapper's dream is to end up like him but they can't recognize.
Yeah and the other day I read one of the best threads ever. Who's more street: Will or Eminem? Everyone agreed that Will's got more cred than Em, and the ones who voted for Em (Stans) didn't even reply. One point someone said that Carlton was more street thna Em. XD
Whooo! Check out my Disc Jockey! What happened to rap? Seriously this modern stuff (mainstream) can't hold anything... the wit, the skills. Ain't no school like the old school.
Do you have the original "Girls ain't nothing but trouble" (not the family-friendly vocal re-write), Takin it to the top, The magnificent Jazzy Jeff, Charlie Mack first out the Limo, Rock the house (that's the track with ready Rock c making the beat, right?) If you do, post them...quick!
Will says to himself "let me show off my DJ"

I never insulted Vanilla Ice I know that he has had some strong disc sales but they are nowhere near as high as will's

Fuck u, man Will SMith Invented rap
dcent2 3 years ago 3

"Im out"

Will smith was actually a damn fine rapper!

somewhere on this album, Will Smith got lost between stayin true to his roots (his early stuff) and going more commercial. How else do you explain a lyrical track like this and "Parent Just Dont Understand" being on the same album???? Obviously, Will chose to be more commercial and never had the street cred again
gemineyeguy 3 years ago

Yeah, the guy is a megastar in Hollywood, but he lost any kind of respect or credibility to any true hip hop fan.
gemineyeguy 3 years ago
You may not have said anything about race but you implied it when you said he doesn't have any street cred. You're judging him on how popular he is, he work has had the same amount of coolness in every release (except for maybe "... And in This Corner" which flat out didn't work). Click on the video "So Fresh" in the side bar, just an example. He may have the best singles, but Will Smith has always wanted to do songs that are lightweight. He's not the kind of guy to flip the script.

The moron who put Smith on the worst rapper list never heard this song or his earlier stuff w/Jeff or his Lost & Found CD

i was thinking the same thing dog. Will is one of the most talented brothers out there. Every rapper's dream is to end up like him but they can't recognize.
Niggazhou263 3 years ago 2
