I was there, I saw THIS STREET. That line of garbled metal-that was a cover on the bridge. For those wondering why we weren't in basements - the tornado was supposed to go 20 miles north of us - that was the info right until it hit. And, it only hit stores/apartments. Only the mall had a basement. People were caught unaware, and took cover as best they could. @MinmatarThrasher You don't know what you are talking about. I have lived in Alabama all my life,inTuscaloosa, particularly. And in school and by our Meteorologist, we have always been taught, we are apart of tornado alley.
@mzeatmon Oh yeah? Well I'll send you a personal message in youtube to educate you on the Major Tornado Alleys.
But in case you don't bother to read it; Alabama is not in Tornado Alley. In fact, Alabama is in DIXIE ALLEY. Which makes up the south eastern united states.
@MinmatarThrasher Ok, I stand corrected. We have been taught that we are apart of Tornado alley. I have lived in the Heart of Dixe all my life and never heard of Dixie Alley. Thanks for correcting me.
@mzeatmon Either is accepted! Tornado Alley is what we call our area as well... NEVER heard it called Dixie Alley until I read this and looked it up on Wiki.
@BAMABELLA71 I have never heard of Dixie Alley, either and I have lived here all my life. I asked some of my family and they all say Tornado Alley. Maybe outsiders call it Dixie Alley....idk(shrugs shoulders)!
I live in Alabama and I can tell you the storm that morning, the sounds was extremely violent then this storm happened later on that day, I slept through the whole thing. The city was in a blackout some cities still are and power will not be restore until Wednesday . The death toll has risen to 219 and they beleive it will rise more because of all the people missing. A member of my church lost his daughter in the storm, her brother found her body in some bushes far from their home.
@008iloveit because when all the stuff happened in Japan, Americans were laughing about it on youtube and being racist about it. So now other people do the same to Americans
its amazing how many people still parished for the modern warning systems in place today....i am glad that the worst of this was not at night i could not imagine that.
Pictures and videos just don't do it justice...My poor city is heartbroken, completely devastated, and in a daze... The buildings can be replaced, but the lives cannot... Please please pray for UA. Roll Tide <3
@greendayfanman01 This is not a joking matter -- well over 200 people in Alabama are dead (including 2 people I know) and the death count is rising!!!!!
@mikedav9O ..thats a really ignorant thing to say. There are actually more BLACK ppl in the south then anywhere else in the US!!! Are u aware of that??! Look it up and if u would watch the news u would see how many black ppl lost EVERYTHING!! Not EVERY white person is racist either. Im from Texas, I would know these things! U need to grow up!
Really? The tornado touched down near UA (Tuscaloosa) where 190 deaths were reported. UA is currently 81% white/ caucasian. It is my best guess (I guess, because I will never come to your racist state) that Alabama and it's neighborhoods are still very segregated (even for 2011 standards); thus, my commentary on those deaths stand as is. Only your warped southern view is ridiculous! Don't believe me? Ask the rest of the progressive nation LOL
There's no such thing as "southern pride". Even if there were such a thing where would Blacks and Mexicans exist in this model called "southern pride": at the bottom or as your equal? Therefore, you are considered domestic terrorists by the majority. When you raise that flag, it represents that you are still against the US Constitution and the LAW which kicked your RACIST WHITE ASSES and FREED THE SLAVES! So take that bullshit you trying pass off as "culture" on somewhere

I don't know what 3Authoress said. I can tell you, good sir, that I'm a white Southern boy. Like you, I'm educated.I have no hatred toward any race and don't support the opinions of those with racist views. I can tell you that many of us in the South are more integrated than what I've seen in other parts of the country. This is besides the point as both black Southerners and white Southerners (mainly the population makeup) were affected by the tornadoes this week. It's time to heal.
@mikedav9O you are the only racist pos here moron. Get a personality , get an education, and learn to accept others if you expect them to accept you. You've been ranting racist crap the whole time while talking about whites being racist...its people like you in all races that keep them in perpetual hate for one another...grow up douchbag.
@mikedav9O You call us racist, yet you haven't even been to our state to know how we are? Not to mention that since you're so against racism, maybe you should stop being racist toward white people? LOOK: Slavery happened a LONG TIME AGO. It's NOT HAPPENING HERE. But, if everyone here acted like you, then we WOULD be racist. So shut up because we're maybe trying to recover from losing family members from this tragic event, and we don't need your trash here.
@mikedav9O What would have you said if none of the people who died were racist white trash? I'm not disagreeing with you, though. I also thank God whenever racist white trash get killed.
The 13th Amendment, which prohibits slavery, was proposed on January 31, 1865. Mississippi, a neighbor of Alabama and one of Alabama's close allies (especially in the civil war), would not approve the 13th Amendment until March 1995. Which is only16 years ago. Racism is still alive and well in the South. The Confederate flag that the rebels continue to fly is a symbol of domestic terrorism (just like Al Qaeda), a symbol of intolerance for other races and the US constitution
@scrotesmcgee - Seriously? You need to spend a day in a basement in Alabama during an EF5 tornado. I think it will quickly become clear to you how "wind" kills people. I had a co-worker and her entire family sucked out of their basement during the EF5 Tornado on April 8, 1998. You are and insensative, ignorant moron.
@golf1886 PEOPLE are dead you moron, not trees, PEOPLE. I'm pretty sure that Karma doesn't kill innocent people because one misguided idiot poisoned trees. We can, however, hope that Karma takes care of you...
@DesigsByJenny Houses in the South most certainly DO have basements. Not all of them, but many of them do. I lived in the Birmingham area for most of my life. However, with an EF4 or EF5, it doesn't matter. The EF5 that hit on April 8, 1998 took my co-worker and her family from their basement....along with the entire house. An entire family was lost. I don't think people understand unless they've lived through it.
How small some of you are and in a word pitiful. Insensitivity and taking about government is like a crying child demanding to be heard only to find out they are hiding a diaper full of shit. My son lives within a half mile of what is now NOTHING, just found out a friend is dead and a fraternity brother hid in a bathroom only to come out to nothing, the house gone. It is easier to lift up conversation and criticism to a national level: one has nothing personally invested. I think it's sad.
Unbelievable... What an incredible and devastating severe weather season it has already been... We're barely into Spring and already seeing violent storms. Hope everyone stays safe out there and my heart goes out to the victim's families...
@scrotesmcgee houses in the south do NOT have basements...its just not something they do and I'm from the north. People get killed by debri and your comment is uncalled for.
@rolltiderollguy: I hope your friend is okay, my prayers go out to any1 who knows ppl who witnesses, or were hurt. For those who r insensitive &calling Americans "stupid": Get the fuck out of our country! We don't need ur ugly, hairy, smelly, gross asses so go back to where u came from & quit terrorizing our country. I work for the media & learned ppl who post sick words r too pathetic to say them outloud bc theyre anti-social, or bc they r sociopaths who should b locked up in an institution
@gigatronicdeth Fuck you you ignorant fuck. My best friend lives in one of the neighborhoods near 'Bama that was ravaged by this tornado, and he was lucky to escape unharmed. I could not get him on the phone for a few hours afterward, however, so I did not know if he was ok. Now imagine for a second that you had a friend in that city, then tell me whether you'd be making ignorant comments. That's what I thought. Stupid fuck.
@scrotesmcgee. Most people in the south do not have basements. And it's not the wind that kills , its whats flying in it. and if idiots did not own computers, these questions would not have to be answered.
@scrotesmcgee But if the wind is carrying a Volvo, several roofs, and a shit ton of bricks through the air, anyone in its path is screwed. And basements don't do much good in an EF4-EF5. You just have to have luck on your side.
@scrotesmcgee As stated by many others, you are so very wrong. You know nothing of tornados, wind or debris fields and it flying in the air. Get a clue, shut your mouth and study up on the subject. First off, not all have basements, second off many didn't have warning or were not able to move fast enough to shelter. Many don't have shelter, many were not watching TV, listening to radio. Many were simply unlucky, as the randomness of debris in the air flying at 180-220 mph is a roll of dice.
that's terrible damage im located in Leeds if im correct it is about 45 minuets from Tuscaloosa where we did not get any bad weather just a couple trees down in my friends yard.
So theyre going to build a tornado shelter every 2 blocks of the city, which a tornado hits once every 10 years? I live in Tennessee, where we get just as many tornados if not more, and you have fun paying those taxes. Just watch the weather and be smart.
@MultiTaketwo I'm shocked at the lack of rational thought that just had. So the federal government is going to place reinforced concrete tornado shelters on every block on every street in an area thats prone to tornados, which is 40% of the country? Talking billions of dollars. More people were probably killed in car wrecks the day before in Tuscaloosa alone. I'm sure you support wearing helmets in automobiles too.
I went to school in Tuscaloosa (UoA) in the late 70's early 80's. I am grieving at all the tragedies that are occruing around our country and the world. It has become a daily event. Southerners are good people. I lost my home in the wildfires out here in California so I know the losses you may be experiencing. Know that you are in my prayers
This was a very powerful storm I was hit by a tornado in 99 but it only affected high profile vhicles these cars were low to the ground and were tossed.
I just can't believe what we are going thru. here in KY we have had the roughest week in a long time but nothing compare to what our fellow countrymens are going thru right now. my heart and prayers be with them.
My best friend lives in Tuscaloosa and I can;t get a hold of him. At least 10 people are dead in this state and you have the nerve to post this comment. When a natural disaster hits your state, I hope people show more care to you and your loved ones than you've shown to mine.
@rolltiderollguy Who exactly were your referring to? as my comment was strictly related to the prevention of catastrophes such as this one in a non negative manner. hope you find your friend and my heart goes out to all those effected.
@MultiTaketwo I'm referring to you. If you really meant your comment as a suggestion to prevent deaths and injuries by which materials to use to reinforce shelters, I apologize. But you must admit, your line, "I mean since the government wants to keep us safe and all," can be taken as sarcasm.
@rolltiderollguy Hang in there man. I am in ttown too and it took me literally all day to get a hold of my friends. Some had their house blown away on 15th but they are ok. Hope everything is ok with your friends.
BTW I noticed how the concrete bridges and such are unscathed.. wonder when the government is going to start making concrete underground tornado Safe Houses for the community..I mean since the government wants to keep us safe and all, Maybe they can use the money they are taking from cigarette tax and build these shelters????

@urmom5024 I think you're confused with Dixie Ally and Tornado Ally.
There are three major Tornado Allys in the U.S.; They are;
Tornado Ally which makes up 7 states in the central U.S.
Dixie Ally which makes up the south eastern U.S.
And Hoosier Ally which is located in the north eastern U.S.
Tornado Ally is only more notoriously because that's where Tornados in the U.S. occur the most.
Really, look it up if you don't believe me. The information is there if you type in a google search.

@ZackHodgson

1myamerica 10 months ago
@scrotesmcgee - Seriously? You need to spend a day in a basement in Alabama during an EF5 tornado. I think it will quickly become clear to you how "wind" kills people. I had a co-worker and her entire family sucked out of their basement during the EF5 Tornado on April 8, 1998. You are and insensative, ignorant moron.
DigiGrafittiMom 10 months ago
@golf1886 PEOPLE are dead you moron, not trees, PEOPLE. I'm pretty sure that Karma doesn't kill innocent people because one misguided idiot poisoned trees. We can, however, hope that Karma takes care of you...
DigiGrafittiMom 10 months ago
@DesigsByJenny Houses in the South most certainly DO have basements. Not all of them, but many of them do. I lived in the Birmingham area for most of my life. However, with an EF4 or EF5, it doesn't matter. The EF5 that hit on April 8, 1998 took my co-worker and her family from their basement....along with the entire house. An entire family was lost. I don't think people understand unless they've lived through it.
DigiGrafittiMom 10 months ago
How small some of you are and in a word pitiful. Insensitivity and taking about government is like a crying child demanding to be heard only to find out they are hiding a diaper full of shit. My son lives within a half mile of what is now NOTHING, just found out a friend is dead and a fraternity brother hid in a bathroom only to come out to nothing, the house gone. It is easier to lift up conversation and criticism to a national level: one has nothing personally invested. I think it's sad.

@scrotesmcgee houses in the south do NOT have basements...its just not something they do and I'm from the north. People get killed by debri and your comment is uncalled for.

Who get killed by wind. Seriously? If those idiots were in there basements like they were supposed to be they wouldn't have died.
scrotesmcgee 10 months ago
@scrotesmcgee But if the wind is carrying a Volvo, several roofs, and a shit ton of bricks through the air, anyone in its path is screwed. And basements don't do much good in an EF4-EF5. You just have to have luck on your side.
mbatl0907 10 months ago
@scrotesmcgee As stated by many others, you are so very wrong. You know nothing of tornados, wind or debris fields and it flying in the air. Get a clue, shut your mouth and study up on the subject. First off, not all have basements, second off many didn't have warning or were not able to move fast enough to shelter. Many don't have shelter, many were not watching TV, listening to radio. Many were simply unlucky, as the randomness of debris in the air flying at 180-220 mph is a roll of dice.

that's terrible damage im located in Leeds if im correct it is about 45 minuets from Tuscaloosa where we did not get any bad weather just a couple trees down in my friends yard.
callofduty1234567guy 10 months ago
So theyre going to build a tornado shelter every 2 blocks of the city, which a tornado hits once every 10 years? I live in Tennessee, where we get just as many tornados if not more, and you have fun paying those taxes. Just watch the weather and be smart.
tylertn10 10 months ago
@tylertn10 $550 Million Spent in first 10 days of Libyan War im sure they can afford it.
MultiTaketwo 10 months ago
@MultiTaketwo I'm shocked at the lack of rational thought that just had. So the federal government is going to place reinforced concrete tornado shelters on every block on every street in an area thats prone to tornados, which is 40% of the country? Talking billions of dollars. More people were probably killed in car wrecks the day before in Tuscaloosa alone. I'm sure you support wearing helmets in automobiles too.
tylertn10 10 months ago
I went to school in Tuscaloosa (UoA) in the late 70's early 80's. I am grieving at all the tragedies that are occruing around our country and the world. It has become a daily event. Southerners are good people. I lost my home in the wildfires out here in California so I know the losses you may be experiencing. Know that you are in my prayers

This was a very powerful storm I was hit by a tornado in 99 but it only affected high profile vhicles these cars were low to the ground and were tossed.

My best friend lives in Tuscaloosa and I can;t get a hold of him. At least 10 people are dead in this state and you have the nerve to post this comment. When a natural disaster hits your state, I hope people show more care to you and your loved ones than you've shown to mine.

@MultiTaketwo I'm referring to you. If you really meant your comment as a suggestion to prevent deaths and injuries by which materials to use to reinforce shelters, I apologize. But you must admit, your line, "I mean since the government wants to keep us safe and all," can be taken as sarcasm.
rolltiderollguy 10 months ago
@rolltiderollguy Hang in there man. I am in ttown too and it took me literally all day to get a hold of my friends. Some had their house blown away on 15th but they are ok. Hope everything is ok with your friends.

BTW I noticed how the concrete bridges and such are unscathed.. wonder when the government is going to start making concrete underground tornado Safe Houses for the community..I mean since the government wants to keep us safe and all, Maybe they can use the money they are taking from cigarette tax and build these shelters????
