  • I think the "rise" actually means that the ball drops less, not that it actually reverses the downwards direction, so the rising fastball is actually still dropping.

  • @y11971alex That is exactly what it is. A "rising" fastball is just a fastball that is high.

  • Was this before after roger clemens did steroids? Hahaha

  • the mythbusters swing like fags

  • @grayfox211 Because they are. Mustaches, taupe's, laughs. All tell tale signs of a gay.

  • lol roger clemens.. dumb juicer that doesn't know what vegan is.

  • a gyroball doesnt actually rise to the batter it looks like it is rising while it actually is falling

  • isnt the rise ball the gyroball in japan??

  • @MATT84z No the Gyroball is one which looks like it is a regular high fastball but sharply drops at the plate. It's like a slider but behaves differently. Altitude and humidity play a big part in this which the Mythbusters didn't really cover.

  • I don't like this show, they've been shown up numerous times.

  • i play baseball, and i have seen the ball rising up, its not a ilussion, im a pitcher, i have seen it from the back it really rise up, get a video of pedro martinez when he was young and you will se

  • Lies my fastball lifts I practice all the time and watch it it lifts slightly so does everyone I pitch against and my catchers so is this myth true possibly they need to come see me in action

  • Now with a Wiffle Ball, the weight is light enough to actually do it but I read somewhere that you'd need to throw a baseball a little over 200 mph (with the proper backspin) in order to actually create enough lift...there's not enough steroids for that...yet...

  • steroids !

  • @MetalOmgz shut up

  • i have seen a catcher throw a rising ball down to second

  • Alright @brittanymorganvargas and eceryone else, softball pitchers because theythrow underhand

, straight underhand, can infact make the ball rise because they are throwing straight up. Watch a USA softball and you will hear the commentators talking about a softball pitchers RISEball. It does not have to follow the rules of a baseball that is throw overhand because it is throw at a 180 degree different angle. So there

  • @skiaddict101 ... there are many sites you can visit that prove that the riseball is an illusion created by the batter thinking the ball will be lower than it actually is when it gets to the plate, thus swinging under the ball. The riseball in soft ball does in fact cross the plate higher than the pitcher released it, but it does so at a constant rate, it does not "jump" or "hop".

  • Not with a fast ball, but with a wiffle ball, YES! haha

  • This is a case of people who don't play baseball not understanding the game. Rising fastballs do not defy gravity, but they do decrease the rate of descent.

Your typical fast ball starts 3-4 feet above the strike zone and moves downward towards a batter. A "rising" fastball changes its angle of descent - in other words it starts to level off. It just stops falling. Simply put, it rises above its normal trajectory, while not actually rising.

  • ok im a pitcher for softball and the rise ball does rite ok. the way you snap the ball makes the ball spin upwards therefore the ball will rise.

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ...wrong you are my litttle Jedi. I know that you probably don't understand the physics involved in pitching so I won't call you a moron. The basic idea is that in order to rise the ball must have a force greater than its own weight. There is no way a person can put enough rotation and speed on a baseball.or softball, for that to happen. You see ping pong balls do it, and beach balls too, because they are very light.

  • @mapache11 ok look here im not sayin that im right but i know that it does literaly flip up. its just like the drop ball. it drops down. but in this case it goes up. the way your index finger scoops up the ball when you bend your knees a little and snap your hand towards your face and your pinky will end up at your nose making the ball go upwards.

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ..If you say that the ball "flips up", then you ARE saying that you are right. But you aren't, and it doesn't. You can make softballs and baseballs curve and drop because neither putch requires it to overcome its weight. You can make ping pong balls and wiffle balls rise because they are very light for their surface area. Baseballs and softballs are too heavy for a human to put enough rotation and speed on the ball for it to defeat gravity and "flip up". It is an illusion.

  • @mapache11 ok now ur pissing me off who the hell is talkin about the fuckin weight???!!!???!! no one dumbass. and im saying that the way you flick ur fuckin wrist will make the dam ball go up and i bet ur dnt even know what the hell your talking about. do u fuckin pitch?? i dont think so! ive been a pitcher for 6 dam years nd i kno what the hell a rise ball is and it flips. dumbass.

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ...listen to the nice man in the video. He's the one who is talking about weight. Or are you deaf as well as a grade 10 physics drop out?

and what the hell do you mean by "flips"???? What definition of flip are you using??? What is the ball, somem kind of pancake??

  • @mapache11 im not fuck deaf man! ok look flips mean the way you move ur fuckin hand u make your wrist go back and thn make it go foworad very hard duh

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ...Sorry, you said:

"ok now ur pissing me off who the hell is talkin about the fuckin weight???!!!???!! no one dumbass. "

The "no one" talking about weight is the guy in the fucking video. So forgive me for thinking that you were deaf. It is either that or you don't speak English and have someone typing your comments for you.

Of course the ball spins coming out of your hand. It also crosses the plate higher than your release. It does not suddenly hop over the bat.

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ..watch any of the rise ball wiffle ball videos that show what a rising pitch looks like. Compare the action of the softball and the wiffle ball. if you can't see a difference then you are blind as well as deaf.

  • @mapache11 ugh u asshole im not tlkin bout the dam vid! wen we were aguing i wuz sayin about us aguing not the vid nd look these a big ass difference between a softball and wiffle ball so stop comparin thm

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ...if you have your literacy teacher read them for you, you will see that other people, have made the same basic comment as i did regarding th eimpossibility of throw a ball that hops or jumps over the bat. It is an illusion. Kind of like the one you have about ever being able to pass physics without being able to understand oral or written explanations.

  • @mapache11 look im done with u its not a fuckin illusion ok! i wud kno cuz im a dam pitcher nd its easy to fight gravity! so shut the fuck up nd fuck off

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ...you will make someone a very angry, frustrated, and disappointed husband one day if you can't admit when, in the face of clear evidence that disproves what you think is true, you maintain a position out of pure stubborness.

I know those were big words, so let me put it to you this way.

No matter what you THINK the ball is doing, science PROVES it is NOT doing it. Whether you are a pitcher or not is irrelevant. Learn when to admit you are wrong.

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas ..if you want everyone here to believe that you are not a troll, then post your own video proving what you think. Do not use a catcher. Put the camera behind the plate. Fire away. Then put the camera at a side angle so that we can see the entire flight of the ball. If you are successful, it will be the ONLY video on youtube that shows a softball rising suddenly as it reaches the plate. Good luck.

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas, yeah, you're wrong. You've never pitched, you know nothing about pitching, and are, in general, an ignorant and pointlessly angry individual. It is literally impossible. Get over it.

  • @jdlund u little asshole u dnt even know who the hell i am and i do pitch and i've been pitchin for a long time so shut the fuck up. i bet u never pitched once so shut up

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas, I don't need to pitch to know that what you are describing is literaly impossible. Since you are lying about doing something that is impossible to do I can guess that you are lying about everything else. Since you clearly know nothing about the physics of throwing a ball I can only imagine that either you are a shitty pitcher or you aren't a pitcher at all. Either way you are full of shit.

  • @BrittanyMorganVargas

    dumbass haha

  • i swear to god i am 11 and in 1 of my games i was up to bat and i went to swing at a fastball and it lifted up over my bat and i was like WTF i was so pissed cuz it was dead center of the strike zone

  • @derekdabest12 Well, once you're 19 you'll take a physics class in college and learn that that's not what was happening. The ball seems to rise because it just doesn't drop as far as you expect it to. When someone throws a ball straight, it's actually falling the entire time and you've come to anticipate a certain amount of drop that comes naturally from gravity. Even a "rising fastball" will drop...just not as much as you expect and thus you perceive it as a rise.

  • you can either get a submarine pitcher or a strait up softball pitcher

  • well amy would be in the kitchen so it would be impossible for her to play baseball!

  • i've done some research it should rise if the force up is bigger than the gravity that pulls the ball down in theory it's right

  • @yonieter holy shit. thats exactly what they said in the video. i hope you dont feel smart for finding out that if the force propelling an object up is greater then the force pulling an object down the object will move up instead of down. you should be ashamed for posting that

  • @CFlaherty93

eigenlijk niet dus rot een end op tering amerikanen ga maar lekker Nederlands leren

  • Ramon Martinez of the Dodgers in the 90s is the best rising fastball i ever seen ..yes its a optical illusion...since there is a mound n pitcher is higher, pitcher has to throw same level as the mound and not throw down ..and i do think it does rises some what but its more a illusion.

  • lol i play little leauge as the pitcher for my team. im 13, and i usually use this pitch at 0-2 two outs no one on. that situation doesnt happen ofter, but when it does, i use it. and the pitch DOES rise! you throws it like a 2 seamer of 4 seamer, but its like in the middle of both.

  • It's an optical illusion. You just think the pitch rises. It is literally impossible. Trust me it isn't actually rising.

  • it can be done if thrown underhand or submarine pitch?

  • Well yes with an underhand throw the ball is going to go upward, but that's not exactly what they are referring to here. The idea here is that it somehow rises from its initial trajectory, which is impossible for a human being to do. The initial trajectory of a ball thrown underhand is upward.

  • easy , just trow it up

  • it can be done in softball,,easy

  • jamie clearly has a 2nd career

  • i bet its just cuz some fastballs spin fast enough so they don't fall quite as fast as they should. i guess it seems like they rise just cuz they dont fall quite as fast.

  • God...what is it with people saying the swear that the ball will rise? I guess physics cease to exsist on their mounds. They just explained it people!! Its simple physics. It CANT RISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the only guys that know how to throw this is the few, the proud, the marines. and also why did they get roger clemens to pitch if he was like 45. get a young gun. and if you really want to se a ball rise, get pat neshek

  • GO TWINS! Too bad hes still hurt. But anyway... wouldn't matter if you got him. Yes, the ball is being thrown in a rising, upward trajectory, but the ball itself is not rising any even when submarine pitchers throw. In other words, you cant make a ball curve UP and away just because your throwing from low to high like a pitcher who throws high to low can curve a ball down and away. Get it? Its just not possible, period.

  • pat nesheks so awsome, he could probably do it. still not sure why they got roger clemens. btw twins aren't making it to the playoffs. my tigers are gonna win when you lose. but Pat Neshek is still the coolest reliver in the league. and also, you could throw underhand and make the ball go up.

  • You can hate on me for this if you want but I have seen a ball rise. I cought for my baseball team and only one kid could throw it. He never knew how he did it, he always said I just tried to throw it as hard as I could. Like I said, hate if you want Im just sayin what I know.

  • Did u not just see the video. Its impossible for anyone to throw the ball hard enough to where the seams on the ball will provide lift. Its an trick that your brain plays on you while the ball is in flight. Look it up.

  • no one is hating on you. what are you 10? Its physically IMPOSSIBLE! I,M.P.O.S.S.I.B.L.E. IT CAN NOT BE DONE! You can say it all you want, you clearly don't know. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE, its physics. When you get to high school one day, you might learn about it. Or go on believing gravity doesn't exist when your catching.

  • its not impossible for a ball to rise... but the amount of spin necessary exceeds the capabilities of the human arm...

  • For a baseball to physically rise from its initial starting trajectory, it would have to exert more force upward than its own weight. Though the max force a baseball can exert is only half its weight... making it PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE! Regardless how fast the ball is spinning. K?

  • Listen, buddy... I'm just telling you some information that was relayed to me from a third party. I don't care if it rises or not. Leave it over the plate and I will drive it out.

  • haha i thought the same thing

  • :07 looks like Kevin Youkilis LOL

  • haha it does

  • listen, pitchers are like 6 feet tall, throwing over the top of their body, on top of a mound, that amounts to at least 8 feet. to get the ball to the strike zone, maybe 4 feet above ground, they MUST throw it down.

also, if the ball is thrown fast enough, as it comes towards the plate your eyes cant follow it fast enough so ur mind fills in the gaps in vision, and when the ball is higher than it seems to be, you automatically think it rises

    IDIOTS

  • It's easy to rise a fastball, just get a submarine pitcher...... lol

  • @ilovegames14 thats not a rising fastball....

  • i agree with you

  • Agreed. Yet for some reason, there are people out there that swear it will rise. As u said...IDIOTS!

  • You can disagree all you want with gravity and physics. They always win, though.

  • Chad Bradford used to throw a fastball that would rise.

  • yea cuz hes a submarine pitcher

  • a good 4 seam fastball doesnt not rise it just doesnt drop so it gives the illusion of rising...any good cather will tell you the only grip the us to throw someone out is pretty much a 4 seam fast ball so the ball doesnt drop mid air and a throw out...same concept hard heat the wont drop at all looks like its rises up

  • @deebowandelsyou Exactly. With the right velocity and proper spin, it can give the impression that a fast ball rose up, when it actually just didn't dip down when the batter thought that it would--or to the extent he anticipated. It's more of an optical illusion than anything, I guess.

  • the only place i hav actually seen a riser is at the cages. me and my uncle sat there and watched the machine from the side a couple times and it did rise. not everytime though.

  • The ball used in the cages arn't real baseballs. Cage balls are lighter so it dosn't need as much backspin.

  • never saw it in baseball but it happens in cricket. the ball does not really rise, but its path straightens out as it goes down. this especialy happens on very cold days with new balls

  • A rising fastball is just a fastball that doesnt angle down

  • The rising fastball is an optical illusion. The ball does not sink as much as your brain thinks it will because it is moving so fast. Around 90mph and you have a fastball that "rises."

  • you can actually throw a "rising" fastball pitching submarine or 3/4 but throwing 3/4 is almost impossible and they dont rlly rise they just appear to be rising

  • i have thrown a rising fastball i have do not know how to do it again but my uncle can do it on command maybe it is just illuion but it works none the less.

  • no you prob throw a fastball high.

  • what if u were a sumbmarine pitcher

  • If you are submarine the ball goes up because you threw it up. It actually doesn't travel in a flat straight line anyway since submariners throw too slow. Gravity still pulls down the ball and the path simply levels out with he ground after starting with an upward trajectory. It does not continue to go up.

  • @baseballaficionado all submariners dont throw slow, compared to a johnson 95er yeah but some can throw high 80' which isnt a bad speed for a pitch if you have control which is their main priority, speed creates homers off speed embarrases hitters, especially submarin off speed like chad bradfor back when he was a met....................go METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @baseballaficionado submariners don't throw slow hahah

  • @baseballaficionado "submariners throw too slow. "...... dumbass -_-'

  • its possible t throw a rising fastball if the wind is the exact right speed coming from the exact right directionn its like a 1 in a million chace

  • that is correct yet the myth actually comes from batters who THINK that it is rising, because it is going level. Since you pitch off the mound the ball usually is going downwards. But if you throw it level it looks like it is rising get my point? correct me if i am wrong

  • Yeah, the only way to make a fastball "rise" would be to throw 200 mph+. Steroids anybody?

  • In The Physics of Baseball, Robert Adair suggests that the pop in a good fastball is an illusion caused by the fact that the ball doesn't drop as fast as the hitter expects. Thus, it looks like it's rising.

  • This is consistent with my experience, as well. I have no doubt the physics experts in the world are right about it being a myth, but I've had enough batters in my past ask me "how I make the ball rise like that" to convince me that the illusion is real; physically possible or not.

  • Agreed, its more of an illusion due to all four seams spinning hard, the only way it would rise would probably upon release when the ball miht get a jump out of the hand but thats irrelevant to this discussion.

  • the end was funny! althou it features roger clemens again...
