There were real heroes back then. Those that did heroic things, because it was the right thing to do. The part in the song of the woman who saved the baby, was actually a man. The writer's of the song put that it was a woman because it fit better with the music and the rhyming. It was my grandfather. He never spoke about it. We found out when my family was in the cemetery burying him and the town major ran yelling into the cemetery, he said "stop that man is a hero" and he told us that my grand

Mi hermano es sobreviviente de esa tragedia..el se llama Enrique Garcia...la parte de la cancion que dice.."En brazos de su papito etc. etc. " se refiere a su hijito de 7 meses que fallecio en esa tragedia....

Yo me acuerdo cuando sucedio eso era pequeña y despues d emas grandesit ame acuerdo hablar con esta señora que iba en ese viaje y fue una de las personas que se salvo y contaba ella que eso fue terrible ese dia , ella jamas volvio a montarse en un avion....Tambien me acuerdo que mi mama me decia que la primera ves que vine aca a Estados Unidos yo tenia tres añitos y fue en la Pan American que segun ella me decia que el viaje habia durado 7 horas....

Datos curiosos de esta cancion. Fue escrita por el maestro Rafael Hernandez el mismo dia del accidente. Grabada por el Trio Vegabajeno en los Estudios Ochoa en San Juan y enviado a RCA en Nueva York para hacer el disco. Esto me lo conto el propio Fernandito Alvarez hace mas de 20 anos.

Despues de ese accidente, Pan American NUNCA mas volo a Puerto Rico en Viernes Santo.

My sister told me this story after speaking to a survivor. I had never heard this song before today and its very emotional. These words capture the event and its suffering. There are only a few TRIO groups that are held in such high esteem that could sing and interpret these words with such anguish in such a respectable manner.
