Connection between religion and morality? When it comes to federal prison at least, it's a strong relationship - a strong INVERSE relationship:
1997, Federal Bureau of Prisons, only 0.21% of inmates were atheist
The Federal Bureau of Prisons does have statistics on religious affiliations of inmates. The following are total number of inmates per religion category:
@honestyize That's a misunderstanding of the statistics, which are specifically from the US. What's interesting is that estimates of the level of atheism in the US population in general range from 0.7% to 9% - but wherever it falls in this, it shows that people in US Federal prisons are *less* likely to be atheist than people in the wider population are. Which, as mgorfain suggests, calls into question the idea that religious people are more likely than atheists to be moral.
"... make sense"??? Look again at the percentages here.... as of 1997 perhaps 10% of the U.S. population identified themselves as atheist and yet, when it comes to the population of federal prisons, only .21% (thats 1/5 of 1 %!!!) of federal prisoners were atheist. Maybe atheists are just more clever criminals and don't get caught as much, maybe they have smarter attorneys, maybe they only commit non-federal crimes... or just maybe....morality has NOTHING to do with religion or god!
@mgorfain Are you taking into account the percentages of each religion in the general population? I'm actually indifferent toward religion, and don't consider myself any of them, but bad statistics annoy the hell out of me. Here's the breakdown of population per religion (only listed same denominations as you did)
Catholic: 23.9%
Protestant: 51.3%
Muslim: .6%
Atheist: 1.6%
Still supports your argument, and now also makes sense.
@patrick112590 i don't think that i probably am a "master" (although i'm not certain what the arbitrary requirements for that are... but i likely don't have such a current capability as judged by you and/or your peers) of modesty...
Even though I hold no belief in any god, I have to say it would be hilarious if there was in fact a God and a heaven and all that, and Hitchens was really Satan, come to Earth to defy God's will and lead people astray or whatever. That would be epic.
I have little doubt that if god and satan really existed, satan would actually be the good guy trying to help us rebel against god's dictatorship. It seems obvious to me, even from the very words of the bible. Satan freed Adam and Eve from the mental prison of Eden by giving them knowledge.
Did you hear that Christopher Hitchens had a deathbed conversion? When a priest came to see him to give him one last chance to accept God, Hitchens turned him into an atheist :D
The greatest and most tragic loss to free thinking and rationality and just plain common sense and formidable intelligence and unstoppable courage can be summed up in two words. Christopher. Hitchens.
@andromidius ;) I was giving them the benefit-of-the-doubt; but yes, religion is all about being dishonest and fabricating and quote-mining and (mostly) intentionally misinterpreting real science. @Caravandrums NONE! because I have yet to interact with an atheist face to face. Or if so, the topic of God or religion never came up, so I would not have known he or she was an atheist. Unfortunately I go to a high school, where I would say 90% are religious. The other ones who aren't, well no one knows about them. Or at least I don't know about them. Also, i haven't met any outside of school either. So, none. I hope this satisfies your question.
i used to find comfort in thinking i know that nothing happens after we die. now i feel meaningless and depressed about the idea, shouldnt those thoughts come in the reverse order?
@askdjflasf No. The idea of non-existence can at certain times be very appealing to people. But religion has does not have ownership of life after death. I believe in life after death and I am not religious. One day I think that survival of consciousness will be an accepted scientific fact.
@weeryan2008 But it isn't untestable. There are various ways to scientifically analyse and test the concept that consciousness and mind can and do exist separate from the body. One way is through studying mediums and mediumship (which includes channelling as well as communication). Another way is to study OBEs and NDEs (out of body experiences and near death experiences). You can also study the concept of reincarnation.
@weeryan2008 Check this out: w w w(dot)victorzammit(dot)com/book/4thedition/chapter14(dot)html Also look up Edgar Cayce. And it is interesting to watch readings on youtube by Lisa Williams and George Anderson. All of these people are/were high-level mediums. There have been hundreds of books written about the subjects of mediumship, the afterlife, and reincarnation, including many case studies, but few scientists have ever put their minds to such things.
@weeryan2008 Also, the theory of life after death has great explanatory power. If we simply accept this one concept as having validity, then hundreds of other as yet poorly understood or unexplainable phenomena take on a whole new light. Suddenly almost all paranormal phenomena and a lot of normal phenomena (e.g. religion) make a lot more sense. It is akin to the explanatory power of Einstein's postulation of the constancy of the speed of light in a vacuum in regard to physics.
@weeryan2008 There are many ways to test it. I can go into further detail if you'd like to send me a personal message. You sound very closed on the subject. Many tests have already been performed. Why is there no way to test this idea, according to you?
It is unscientific to be closed-minded and absolutist.
Survival of consciousness is a definite theory and it has been tested and, to my mind, it has been verified. Did you even follow any of my references?
@endofscene Your (and mine) consciousness is just a manifestation of the brain. There is nothing after the neurons stop firing. When someone suffers partial brain damage, he/she will start to loose certain function and or memories. Now, are you saying that a person can be alive after their brain is completely dead? This belief is completely baseless my friend.
@Singh13saab I realise that is your belief, but I do not share it. Consciousness is, in the human being, connected to the brain, but it is not ultimately dependent upon the brain. Just because the brain affects consciousness does not mean that it creates consciousness. If that were so then why are you the consciousness of that brain and not another brain, or no brain at all? Why aren't you the consciousness of my brain?
@endofscene We have large brains, therefore we can ask the question of "WHY?" and this is mistakenly believed as consciousness. Animals have a brain that is barely big enough to do basic tasks, such as finding food and running from predictors and there is good evolutionary reasons why. A big brain needs a lot of ENERGY and nature is all about conserving energy.
@endofscene I noticed how you conveniently dodged my first question, so I am going to ask again; When someone suffers partial brain damage, he/she will start to loose certain function and or memories. Now, are you saying that a person can be alive after their brain is completely dead?
@Singh13saab I suppose the thing is that our capacity for survival allowed for a surplus of energy which could be used for the more esoteric questions. It's sort of like the idea that in times of war, art is more or less left by the wayside.
@HardHouseMusic4Me We also became carnivores which had a lot more energy relative to the size of the meal.
When we were omnivores, we had to practically eat all day long to obtain enough energy to survive, but when we started eating meat, we had more free time on our hands, which we used to come up with language, religion and ask esoteric question.
God is not like the dictators on our planet.. our dictators are like god.. in that MAN has created this DICTATOR character in the sky to TELL us RIGHT from WRONG when we as humans CLEARLY already have an understanding of this by now.. Dictators USE GOD as a prefect example of how to enslave people to do your bidding and to OBEY your LAWS dictated without any question!! GOD IS A RAT ASS BACKSTABBER.. :) GOD IS BULLSHIT :) enjoy your delusion!
@gargamel6699 I say, back whence he came. Seems more fitting then RIP, jmo. He really nailed the last 2 minutes of this video, I had never seen that before and I thought I had seen every Hitch video 5 times already.
@MrMilagroqq Oh mate, I'm the same, when I heard he died it didn't really affect me too much. A week or two later it just hit me, very sad. Let's learn from him, remember what a brilliant man he was, and continue the battle he so fiercely fought.
Fact - Adam Smith, deliberately used the metaphor "Invisible Hand" as synonymous with God.
If Adam Smith, had used the word God instead of the metaphor "Invisble Hand", we'd be asking who was Adam Smith, but the Principle of Self Interest, Laws of Supply & Demand and the "Invisible Hand"/God, would still exist.
Fundamental Logic 101. A commitment to the truth (only sane choice), inherently expands to include all possibilities. Arbitrary dismissal of a possibility, breaches that commitment as a fatal logic error, proving themselves fundamentally insane liars & frauds. When Atheist/Satanists dismiss God as a possibility, they breach their commitment to the truth, resulting in the mindfucked insanity to argue justifying a lie, is rational behavior.
Logic is an online textbook that explains fundamental logic. The basis of the human logic and belief structure, is a fundamental commitment to the Truth (ONLY SANE CHOICE), which inherently expands to include all possibilities.
"Logic, an online textbook by Garth Kemerling, explains the basic elements of elementary logic, at an undergraduate level."
Fail the truth (INSANE) or sustain a commitment to the truth (SANE). Atheist/Satanists are fundamentally insane, lying frauds
@desasterz I have never believed in god and I am doing quite well with out religion. "God" is an aspect of the mind. I believe it's created as an answer to the questions we can't answer. "I can't explain it so there must be something bigger that did it." That's really all I see it being. I grew up practically on my own and learned good virtues better than many of those who learned their "virtues" from their religion. What does that say to you?
@ImpenetrableSilence it says FOOEY to RELIGION and GOD... we do not need god to dictate terms... we need terms to be understood without god... as these "terms" were there BEFORE god came into the picture... humans had morals BEFORE RELIGION decided it needed to dictate its MORALS [or lack there of] to everyone, and those who did not accept these "terms" were KILLED or deemed EVIL and fit for hell... hmmm... interesting concept.. how do people NOt see the flaws within GOD himself.
What the atheists who masturbate over this media over the internet don't realise is they need these videos, they need these links, they need someone tiredly repeating the same boring expressions over and over again to give them life.
Religious people aren't here liking these videos, watching endless hours of them because they are... happy. That's it.
@Reaver4545 It's interesting to get an insight on people out there. How they think and in this case how they are manipulated because a man in an English accent on a state plays on their insecure intellectual sentiments, pseudo-intellectually of course.
@TomFynn OK... so you insult the mentally ill. Very good of you... that's sarcasm but I doubt you got that because you think Hitchens is something special.
They're not religious people. Be distinct. Be thorough. Be appropriate. They are a minority who think a certain way. That is a free lesson from somebody other than Hitchens, Hitchens, who wants you to think if one person of a group does something they all do it. Hitler did that... somebody Hitchens and Dawkins are inaccurate about.
@dolphinsufi "They are a minority who think a certain way. " No, they are delusional people, who actively try to spread their delusion to other people up to and including defenceless children. Faith is a delusion. And Hitchens and Dawkins are 100% correct about that.
The people who watch and like these videos are intellectuals, they like hearing intelligent conversations that provoke thought and educated speculation.
You are missing the entire point of this, lmao.
Didn't you just describe what religion is?
"they need these videos, they need these links, they need someone tiredly repeating the same boring expressions over and over again to give them life."
@Mangotropolis Are you joking? This is one person mouthing off about the same thing. How is that intellectual? If you wrote a high school paper like that you'd get an F. Intellect is critically analysing and arguing the world around you. You're just accepting anything spoon fed to you by a marketing company who know you'll shove your hands down your pants at anything that has a shoddy old world image of intellectual. This is pseudo intellectual for people who can't look at diff. perspectives.
@dolphinsufi It seems you could say the same thing about religious people. They need to go to church etc., to listen to "someone tiredly repeating the same boring expressions over and over again to give them life".
Are religious people really happy...why are they always angry at atheists...and why do they so badly want to go to heaven?
Atheists know how to be happy in the hear and now. Religious are hoping for happiness in another realm...of which there is no proof.
@ninjamojo711 Church? Far too many sweeping generalisations there. Far too many. This is why you don't know what religion is because you believe a man with a 6 word argument he is stretched out for people like you so he can make millions. Get a real education then hang your head in shame when you realise your masturbation over Dawkins and Hitchens was due to your insufficient growth in education.
Religous people are not angry at atheists. That's what Dawkins and Hitchens want you to believe.
@dolphinsufi Well aren't you a smug douche-bag. If you actually read my post thoroughly, you would have noticed I included the word "etc." after church as to include other religious institutions.
The religious aren't angry at atheists? Hmm?...perhaps you should read some debates on this site...but I suppose you are too busy thinking about others masturbating than about reading details. You keep projecting your obsession. Get help dude.
@dolphinsufi You are thinking as a religious people because YOU need permanent repetitive reinforcement to "believe" your crazy religious mithological tales. Otherwise you'd realize they are fairy tales, immediately (talking snakes, universal floods without geological layers, virginal births, resurrections...)
Can't you think for yourself? Do you know something about psychology? Intelligence and intellect is the capability of holding two conflicting but potent ideas at once. So why do you believe a man who tells you intellect is one shoddy over generalised argument? I have never met anybody like the people Dawkins and Hitchens talk about - that's life experience.
@dolphinsufi As someone already mentioned, watching videos of these previously impossible discussions does seem stimulating and engaging. Christians meet at least once a week for fellowship, gathering around like-minded people, singing songs, sharing testimonies, and just generally confirming each other's beliefs. There's a pleasant sensation the average person gets from having their convictions repeated by many others around them. It's easier to be religious for several reasons.
I didn't know Hitchens personally, but I miss him.

Unfortunately I go to a high school, where I would say 90% are religious. The other ones who aren't, well no one knows about them. Or at least I don't know about them. Also, i haven't met any outside of school either. So, none. I hope this satisfies your question.

askdjflasf 1 month ago
@askdjflasf I guess you should try to focus on the now rather than the future.
Gajoobles 1 month ago
@askdjflasf No. The idea of non-existence can at certain times be very appealing to people. But religion has does not have ownership of life after death. I believe in life after death and I am not religious. One day I think that survival of consciousness will be an accepted scientific fact.
endofscene 1 month ago
@endofscene Isn't it inherintly unscientific though? In the whole 'untestable' area.
weeryan2008 1 month ago
@weeryan2008 But it isn't untestable. There are various ways to scientifically analyse and test the concept that consciousness and mind can and do exist separate from the body. One way is through studying mediums and mediumship (which includes channelling as well as communication). Another way is to study OBEs and NDEs (out of body experiences and near death experiences). You can also study the concept of reincarnation.
endofscene 1 month ago
@weeryan2008 Check this out: w w w(dot)victorzammit(dot)com/book/4thedition/chapter14(dot)html Also look up Edgar Cayce. And it is interesting to watch readings on youtube by Lisa Williams and George Anderson. All of these people are/were high-level mediums. There have been hundreds of books written about the subjects of mediumship, the afterlife, and reincarnation, including many case studies, but few scientists have ever put their minds to such things.
endofscene 1 month ago
@endofscene You do realise that being a medium is not a science? Being a high-level medium literally means nothing. Nothing at all.
weeryan2008 1 month ago
@weeryan2008 Also, the theory of life after death has great explanatory power. If we simply accept this one concept as having validity, then hundreds of other as yet poorly understood or unexplainable phenomena take on a whole new light. Suddenly almost all paranormal phenomena and a lot of normal phenomena (e.g. religion) make a lot more sense. It is akin to the explanatory power of Einstein's postulation of the constancy of the speed of light in a vacuum in regard to physics.
endofscene 1 month ago
@endofscene No, there is no way to test it. Therefore, unscientific. It's also wishful thinking and could not really be called a theory.
weeryan2008 1 month ago
@weeryan2008 There are many ways to test it. I can go into further detail if you'd like to send me a personal message. You sound very closed on the subject. Many tests have already been performed. Why is there no way to test this idea, according to you?
It is unscientific to be closed-minded and absolutist.
Survival of consciousness is a definite theory and it has been tested and, to my mind, it has been verified. Did you even follow any of my references?
endofscene 1 month ago
@endofscene Your (and mine) consciousness is just a manifestation of the brain. There is nothing after the neurons stop firing. When someone suffers partial brain damage, he/she will start to loose certain function and or memories. Now, are you saying that a person can be alive after their brain is completely dead? This belief is completely baseless my friend.
Singh13saab 1 month ago
@Singh13saab I realise that is your belief, but I do not share it. Consciousness is, in the human being, connected to the brain, but it is not ultimately dependent upon the brain. Just because the brain affects consciousness does not mean that it creates consciousness. If that were so then why are you the consciousness of that brain and not another brain, or no brain at all? Why aren't you the consciousness of my brain?
endofscene 1 month ago
@endofscene We have large brains, therefore we can ask the question of "WHY?" and this is mistakenly believed as consciousness. Animals have a brain that is barely big enough to do basic tasks, such as finding food and running from predictors and there is good evolutionary reasons why. A big brain needs a lot of ENERGY and nature is all about conserving energy.
Singh13saab 1 month ago
@Singh13saab Wow, that was really profound.

@endofscene I noticed how you conveniently dodged my first question, so I am going to ask again; When someone suffers partial brain damage, he/she will start to loose certain function and or memories. Now, are you saying that a person can be alive after their brain is completely dead?
Singh13saab 1 month ago
@Singh13saab I suppose the thing is that our capacity for survival allowed for a surplus of energy which could be used for the more esoteric questions. It's sort of like the idea that in times of war, art is more or less left by the wayside.
HardHouseMusic4Me 1 month ago
@HardHouseMusic4Me We also became carnivores which had a lot more energy relative to the size of the meal.
When we were omnivores, we had to practically eat all day long to obtain enough energy to survive, but when we started eating meat, we had more free time on our hands, which we used to come up with language, religion and ask esoteric question.
Singh13saab 1 month ago
@Singh13saab Yes indeed. I can't stand vegetarians, they're renouncing one of the biggest reasons we're here today the way we are XD.

Fact - Economics is a Social Science, College of Liberal Arts.
Fact - Adam Smith's Classical Economic Theory, was Scientificly proven true & correct 250+ yrs ago.

When Atheist/Satanists dismiss God as a possibility, they breach their commitment to the truth, resulting in the mindfucked insanity to argue justifying a lie, is rational behavior.

desasterz 1 month ago
@desasterz I have never believed in god and I am doing quite well with out religion. "God" is an aspect of the mind. I believe it's created as an answer to the questions we can't answer. "I can't explain it so there must be something bigger that did it." That's really all I see it being. I grew up practically on my own and learned good virtues better than many of those who learned their "virtues" from their religion. What does that say to you?
ImpenetrableSilence 1 month ago

Religious people aren't here liking these videos, watching endless hours of them because they are... happy. That's it.
They are happy.

@Reaver4545 It's interesting to get an insight on people out there. How they think and in this case how they are manipulated because a man in an English accent on a state plays on their insecure intellectual sentiments, pseudo-intellectually of course.

They seem to need those.
TomFynn 2 months ago 2
@TomFynn OK... so you insult the mentally ill. Very good of you... that's sarcasm but I doubt you got that because you think Hitchens is something special.
They're not religious people. Be distinct. Be thorough. Be appropriate. They are a minority who think a certain way. That is a free lesson from somebody other than Hitchens, Hitchens, who wants you to think if one person of a group does something they all do it. Hitler did that... somebody Hitchens and Dawkins are inaccurate about.
dolphinsufi 2 months ago
@dolphinsufi "They are a minority who think a certain way. " No, they are delusional people, who actively try to spread their delusion to other people up to and including defenceless children. Faith is a delusion. And Hitchens and Dawkins are 100% correct about that.
TomFynn 2 months ago
@dolphinsufi You are such an idiot. xD
Sounds like what cult Christians do all the time.
Mangotropolis 2 months ago 4
@Mangotropolis Are you joking? This is one person mouthing off about the same thing. How is that intellectual? If you wrote a high school paper like that you'd get an F. Intellect is critically analysing and arguing the world around you. You're just accepting anything spoon fed to you by a marketing company who know you'll shove your hands down your pants at anything that has a shoddy old world image of intellectual. This is pseudo intellectual for people who can't look at diff. perspectives.
dolphinsufi 2 months ago
@dolphinsufi It seems you could say the same thing about religious people. They need to go to church etc., to listen to "someone tiredly repeating the same boring expressions over and over again to give them life".
Are religious people really happy...why are they always angry at atheists...and why do they so badly want to go to heaven?
Atheists know how to be happy in the hear and now. Religious are hoping for happiness in another realm...of which there is no proof.
ninjamojo711 2 months ago 2
@ninjamojo711 Church? Far too many sweeping generalisations there. Far too many. This is why you don't know what religion is because you believe a man with a 6 word argument he is stretched out for people like you so he can make millions. Get a real education then hang your head in shame when you realise your masturbation over Dawkins and Hitchens was due to your insufficient growth in education.
Religous people are not angry at atheists. That's what Dawkins and Hitchens want you to believe.
dolphinsufi 2 months ago
@dolphinsufi Well aren't you a smug douche-bag. If you actually read my post thoroughly, you would have noticed I included the word "etc." after church as to include other religious institutions.
The religious aren't angry at atheists? Hmm?...perhaps you should read some debates on this site...but I suppose you are too busy thinking about others masturbating than about reading details. You keep projecting your obsession. Get help dude.
ninjamojo711 2 months ago 2
@dolphinsufi You are thinking as a religious people because YOU need permanent repetitive reinforcement to "believe" your crazy religious mithological tales. Otherwise you'd realize they are fairy tales, immediately (talking snakes, universal floods without geological layers, virginal births, resurrections...)
rgtrab 2 months ago
@rgtrab You can't spell. Your grammar is bad.
Get some life experience of your own.
dolphinsufi 2 months ago
@dolphinsufi Ad hominem argument.
Yeah, my grammar is bad, and your god is still imaginary despite my bad grammar.
rgtrab 2 months ago 9
@dolphinsufi As someone already mentioned, watching videos of these previously impossible discussions does seem stimulating and engaging. Christians meet at least once a week for fellowship, gathering around like-minded people, singing songs, sharing testimonies, and just generally confirming each other's beliefs. There's a pleasant sensation the average person gets from having their convictions repeated by many others around them. It's easier to be religious for several reasons.
themediocrenontheist 1 month ago
@dolphinsufi
And yet most of those religious people go to church, etc. every week (some even everyday) To do exactly that
And once they hear someone criticising their religion they get mad
What is it with all the hate directed at everyone who doesn't believe the same thing they do? Doesn't quite seem like the thing happy people would do.
