I hear ya, I grew up in Oxnard and listened to the wolfman as often as I could, I have a sixteen yearold son who is getting into radio broadcasting and He loves the wolfman uploads on youtube,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
@MrJacMac1986 Yeah the transmitter tower was in Mexico because the U.S. limited the amount of wattage a station could use. He worked at a station with a 250,000 watt tower that could almost be heard across the country. Great stuff!
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Unfortunately, that's why Wolfman wouldn't keep the listeners today. He was one of a kind in a one of a kind era! Great times then.
@1Dirtfrog I disagree. The conglomerates today just won't pay for talent,,,,a machine is cheaper. Ever since I walked away from radio,,even today I still get job offers but they just won't pay what I want. I own another business that the family could run if I had to rant and rave "on the radio" 3-4 hrs. a day BUT I want paid for it and not $8.00 an hour.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 I hear ya and yield to your experience in the radio world. But, what you and I consider talent is apparently not what the listeners want today. Otherwise, the conglomerates would pay well to attract that talent. The fact that Stern gets the big bucks tells me that his style is what attracts the listeners today, not a Wolfman style. BTW, we shouldn't even be mention them in the same sentence. The Wolfman was a true DJ, Stern is a talking head unrelated to the music biz.
@1Dirtfrog The problem is they want someone for $8.00 an hour to push the buttons. Bean counters always think that way. A lot ot Stern's salary is in XM/Sirius stock. A lot they put out is propaganda about how much he makes. He has to pay his own staff by the way. BUBBA quit because they cut him from $1Million a year to $200,000,,he has to pay his own staff. They put a lot of recording stars on XM/sirius,,,they make their money pitching their concerts.
It's a strange kind of irony that while there is so much honor given to people like WM Jack and classic musicians, they would never be allowed on the radio or signed for a record deal today. Avoiding risk at the cost of greatness.
(And that isn't to say there are no great personalities on radio or musicians today, but risk avoidance has such a choke hold on things.)
I remember I was in a private school in Ventura,CA back in the early 70's , we had a little old radio and we would stay up late to listen to the Wolfman we would turn that radio on and listen to him ,it would fade in and out but, we didn't mind we had to have our Wolfman fix! the good old days : )
Growing up in Buffalo we had some of the greatest DJ but I heard of Wolfman Jack. Satationed in Monterey in the early 70's I listened to The Wolfman on XPRS and later in El Paso. The greatest!
@mryellowcrown thats right!!!! growing up in the 60s 70s, and vacationing in rosarito, ensenada, all summer you could hear the Wolfman in SO CAL!!!!!!! HE WAS THE BEST!
remember well, growing up in the Los Angeles area in the 60;s & 70;s , loved to listen to the Old Wolfman every night, would come in much clearer at night. Viva Wolfman! P.S., Love all the vintage commercials too. Thanks for Posting!
No shit motherfucker, Wolfman jack amounted to more than you ever will. How bout this: Go eat a bunch of Whoppers and Big Macs, hopefully you'll fucking well pass away without so much as a couple of knob-gobblers bitching about you're death on youtube. Have some respect you fucking monkey.
@Pestashios Come on I loved the guy even met him once at his recording studio in downtown LA. I simply mean't that weight is killing off a lot of people, too young.
Mason doesnt come close to the wolfman, he had to buy his own trophies at the Clearwater Charity car show. He always got beat by me and my buddies and so he opted to buy trophies for just his type of cars. Anyway he wasnt even in the class of Dr Paul Bearer! The WOLFMAN RULES!!!!! RIP wolfman we miss him nothing like cruising Saturday night on the Blvd and listening to Wolfman!!
Even though I OWN the TRADEMARK to the trade name THEMOJOMAN (reg.ustm #2 343 775) since 1959 on the INTERNET I don't "really" own it. Every un-original ding dong and his brother uses it. GOTTA COPY SOMEONE ELSES CREATIVITY.
Wolfman's first Mexican border blaster, XERA in 1962 used 500,000 watts, but radiated north, which gave it an effective wattage of one million, although their true wattage varied, most likely used 250,000 watts most nights, and only came on air after sunset when AM signals bounce off the ionosphere, and go a thousand miles easily. Later on in California, it was XERB which used 150,000 at their peak, radiated north again, by contract the highest wattage AM station in the US has 50,000 watts.
Part of what you say is correct. NEVER 500,000 WATTS. Bouncing off the inosphere is correct but THOUSANDS with an S. Being directional also helps. XERB in JUAREZ at 800am had to be directional to protect CKLW in Windsor also at 800am which is east of the Mississippi. LOOK UP "BORDER BLASTERS" and read that whole article,,then you'll know. Radio engineer and Personality Jock for years.
I think the Juarez station used 150,000 watts, and if I am right, it was perhaps the last border blasting cranking out rock and roll on AM radio. XRock it was called. Of course all the Mexican stations begin with an X. I lived close to an 800 AM station at the time in Canada, (not CKLW), and I was never able to pick up XRock, but I guess that's a bit of history I can only dream about. Where did you work on air ?
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Well, out in the middle of nowhere (Saskatchewan), there was an 800 am station . It has been on 800 am continuously since 1946. It's now 10,000 watts day and night, but when I was a kid, it would power down at night to 5.000. Mind you, most all the radio stations in Saskatchewan beam north at night to protect other stations south of the border on the same frequency., which explains why nobody has ever heard it except in Sask
OMG - Takes me back!! Wolfman Jack and Mason Dixon - the two best disc jockeys that ever tripped the airwaves....I miss Wolfman Jack's smoky voice - Thanks so very much for the post. I'll be spending the next few hours just listening to all of the videos you have.....

It was 250,000 watts I believe when Wolfman was on, but originally licensed as XERA, and later XERF, wattage varied, but it was built at 500,000 watts. They ran this baby from the middle of nowhere with a generator I believe, for the most part, and one has to think that the wattage varied wildly, but XERF was licensed for 250,000, so you are correct.
