It felt pretty amazing to me.

@c16xe you can't understand the choice because you have your facts wrong. My stock miata 1.8L Iron Block engine weighed 380lbs. My LS1 with all accessories (except ac) weighed 471lbs. Stock Miata Tranny was 80lbs, and T56 was 140. So all in all I added 151lbs. And when I raced the Ferrari in the video, my car made 314rwhp. Stock headers, stock heads, stock cams, and single crunch bent 2.5" Exhaust.
@PSI240SX you are right, thats not much weight added for such a big engine. But still, find it to be not very powerfull for such a big capacity engine. Must be good for reliability. Your 1.8 iron block had 140hp right? Thats good for 280/300 with a turbo setup i suppose. Anyway good job!
@c16xe yeah, but I have owned plenty of higher hp turbo cars, and hands down, no question the V8 was 100x more fun to drive. Instant power and torque at any rpm. Plus I liked the novelty of having the V8 in there. Some people just couldn't believe it was even possible. I later added dual exhaust, an LS6 intake manifold, and a small cam and the car made 378hp 372tq. It ran 11.6@120 on 6" wide stock rims with 205 drag radials. It was an amazing car. Cheers.
@c16xe well with the V8 you do not have the problems that a turbo bring aboard like heat soak,turbo lag,intercooler piping that can pop off and so on plus all the maintaince like rebuilding the turbo and so many more parts that can fail. I have had many turbocars including a twin turbo set up and my next set up will be a ls1 Miata .
@c16xe its a push rod engine, its smaller then on ovc engine of the same displacement... fords 4.6 modular is quite a bit larger and heavier then the 427 ci ls7...
for example, its shorter, lower and lighter then bmws 3.0 i6....
displacement doesnt matter but hp,weight, and outside dimensions of an engine do
@c16xe Depends on the LS1 as well, Ive seen peoples LS1's hit around 360hp at the flywheel stock, this one is sick and all, I also like the 2jz swaps.
you can hook up a ford 302 with a moddified bell housing spacer, but the clutch has to be upgraded and its true the transmissions can only handle about 400hp max and maybe the same for torque, and yes your right my rear end is a 1986 thunderbirds that had the 4cyl turbo engine.
@testy462 haha, I'm sure I would have. This was just after the swap was finished, and completely stock. I later added a cam, and a few other mods netting me 64whp, but I couldn't get my buddy in the Ferrari to run me again... guess he was scared =)

@nightmathzombieethan doubth that its heavy. LS1 engine is very light (fully aluminum). not much heavier then stock in line 4 that was in that mazda. the ford 5.0 (cast iron block) kills the wieght balance in mx-5.
@nightmathzombieethan I am the miata driver. The car weighed 2550 after the swap, which is about 200lbs more than stock. Most of the weight difference was in the transmission, so I was still able to achieve 51/49 weight distribution. The car handled great, i actually built it for track days, and not drag racing.

@tacomanfan344 It's because the traditional V8 uses a crossplane crank - the 4 journals form a cross when you look at the crankshaft from the end. The 90 degree V angle between the two banks means that you don't have the two banks firing alternately, meaning that each bank is effectively an odd-fire 4 cylinder inline, which gives the rough rumble sound. Ferrari V8 is a flatplane crank, which is like an even fire 4 cylinder on each bank, so it sounds smooth, not rough like other V8s.

@PSI240SX As did I [state facts]. I just think you aren't considering the whole picture. They were/are meant to be an economical roadster, not a genuine sports car. They indeed sold a lot of them, mainly due to their pricing and marketing success (much like the Camry and Corolla). But sales numbers simply don't support that it is the "best selling sports car." The Miata is a neat and capable car, but its purpose was never as a true sports car. "Sporty" maybe, but not a genuine status. Semantics.

@c16xe you can't understand the choice because you have your facts wrong. My stock miata 1.8L Iron Block engine weighed 380lbs. My LS1 with all accessories (except ac) weighed 471lbs. Stock Miata Tranny was 80lbs, and T56 was 140. So all in all I added 151lbs. And when I raced the Ferrari in the video, my car made 314rwhp. Stock headers, stock heads, stock cams, and single crunch bent 2.5" Exhaust.

@PSI240SX you are right, thats not much weight added for such a big engine. But still, find it to be not very powerfull for such a big capacity engine. Must be good for reliability. Your 1.8 iron block had 140hp right? Thats good for 280/300 with a turbo setup i suppose. Anyway good job!

@c16xe yeah, but I have owned plenty of higher hp turbo cars, and hands down, no question the V8 was 100x more fun to drive. Instant power and torque at any rpm. Plus I liked the novelty of having the V8 in there. Some people just couldn't believe it was even possible. I later added dual exhaust, an LS6 intake manifold, and a small cam and the car made 378hp 372tq. It ran 11.6@120 on 6" wide stock rims with 205 drag radials. It was an amazing car. Cheers.

@c16xe well with the V8 you do not have the problems that a turbo bring aboard like heat soak,turbo lag,intercooler piping that can pop off and so on plus all the maintaince like rebuilding the turbo and so many more parts that can fail. I have had many turbocars including a twin turbo set up and my next set up will be a ls1 Miata .

@c16xe its a push rod engine, its smaller then on ovc engine of the same displacement... fords 4.6 modular is quite a bit larger and heavier then the 427 ci ls7...
for example, its shorter, lower and lighter then bmws 3.0 i6....
displacement doesnt matter but hp,weight, and outside dimensions of an engine do

you can hook up a ford 302 with a moddified bell housing spacer, but the clutch has to be upgraded and its true the transmissions can only handle about 400hp max and maybe the same for torque, and yes your right my rear end is a 1986 thunderbirds that had the 4cyl turbo engine.

@nightmathzombieethan doubth that its heavy. LS1 engine is very light (fully aluminum). not much heavier then stock in line 4 that was in that mazda. the ford 5.0 (cast iron block) kills the wieght balance in mx-5.

@nightmathzombieethan I am the miata driver. The car weighed 2550 after the swap, which is about 200lbs more than stock. Most of the weight difference was in the transmission, so I was still able to achieve 51/49 weight distribution. The car handled great, i actually built it for track days, and not drag racing.

@tacomanfan344 It's because the traditional V8 uses a crossplane crank - the 4 journals form a cross when you look at the crankshaft from the end. The 90 degree V angle between the two banks means that you don't have the two banks firing alternately, meaning that each bank is effectively an odd-fire 4 cylinder inline, which gives the rough rumble sound. Ferrari V8 is a flatplane crank, which is like an even fire 4 cylinder on each bank, so it sounds smooth, not rough like other V8s.
