This is what happens when a decent MMA striker stands with a world class puncher. But Before boxers even think of stepping into a cage, I'd like to see a world class boxer go up against a world class Muay Thai fighter. There's so many aspects of the standup game alone that a pure boxer has never been exposed to: Knees, elbows, feet, shins, clinch control, clinch striking. A boxing stance usually makes them more vulnerable to leg kicks since more weight is put on the lead leg.

A good ground battle can be just as intersting as a good stand up war, it depends on the persons opinion. And remember, MMA is a young sport but its also growing exponentially, the net income of each event will continue to grow as the years come. And no, a boxer with some basic wrestling is not set, they would b dominated

Mercer got tooled by Kimbo on the ground however, and Kimbo has almost no ground game to speak of. So yes, most pure strikers would be dominated in MMA fights. And boxing may still be no 1, but it seems like its popularity is waning, so i dont think its wise to say it always will be the top combat sport

MMA will eventually surpass boxing. I don't think it has yet. I think it will by 2018. Its growth is insane when you consider that in its current form, it has only been around for nine years; and the growth is exponential.

But MMA is a more accurate representation of a real fight. I want to see the best fighter in the world.

About the Netherlands, freefight (Dutch MMA) is becoming far less common than in the '90s because of how big the kickboxing scene has become.

im sick of ppl bringing up the kimbo vs mercer fight.mercer had never trained in bjj or wrestling or grappling of any kind whatsoever going into that fight.thats how mercer is hell fght anyone.on the other hand.kimbo had been training with bas rutten and top level mma guys for months prior to their fight. if mercer had trained with a camp like that he would have destroyed kimbo even at his advanced age..you throw in some submission skills with mercers hands and kimbo wouldnt have stood a chance.

I'm aware boxers fight more often. (I made the point myself) I stated it because that guy was trying to undermine boxing and say why don't they come over to UFC if they're so good so I stated there's less money. And no it is not like comparing baseball to football. That's stupid. A baseball player couldn't play high level football but a boxer can be a high level UFC fighter because boxing skills can be implemented into UFC. Baseball skills can not be implemented into football and vice versa.

@terromus, I'm a fan of both sports but Tim Silvia is bad and Ray Mercer is good so the out come was as expected. In the other case Randy Couture is good and James Toney is good so that's the fight I think that decides who the winner is. I think Randy Couture will win because he's not as stupid as Tim Silvia and as bad.

@terromus becuase I'm just thinking, even if it's true that UFC undercard fighters get paid more for that one fight, bare in mind UFC fighters fight much less than a boxer. A boxer won't even get a title fight until he's had about 15-20 fights or even more. Couture in his whole career has had 28 fights and in that time he's been twice light heavyweight champion and three times heavyweight champion. James Toney has had over 70 fights and I'm sure has earned much more than a UFC fighter.

And the IBA belt is a very minor belt and it was vacant so he didn't have to fight a proper champion to get it. And who cares about undercard fights? Boxing champions can make millions for one fight. @TheRipper760 which sport is better depends on who you ask but mma covers a wider variety of the fightgame while boxing only covers boxing. boxers have without question the best hands and a boxer will always have a punchers chance but under normal circumstances a guy who only knows how to box wouldnt beat an mma fighter unless the boxer just caught him with a big shot which is always a possiblility but mostly unlikly to happen. james toney is fighting randy couture in ufc 118 speaking of boxers!

@uralldiseasedXD that wouldnt be an issue one way or the other really because most people argue that mma fighters arent even as good with hands as an amature boxer(which i disagree)so past prime or not dont make much difference but boxers lack the skills across the board to be a major threat in mma and boxings only good when the other guy is content to stand up and throw punches. james toney is 41 and he's gonna fight cotoure but couture is 46 so past prime is no excuse for toney
