  • I went to Woolworths in Leominster,Woolworths in Hereford,Woolworths in Truro in Cornwall and Woolworths in St.Ives near where I live.

'Tis depressing times. My post office that was just over the road has closed and it was our only shop! Our nearest shop is now a 20 minute walk away!

  • woolworths is a corporation just like the state UK Plc.

  • Poundlands not bad but woolworths was better

  • SAD!

  • it wasn't saved mate, sorry

  • Woolworth's in America have been gone since the late 90's. My family is originally from Aberystwyth and visiting there I have been in the Woolworth's in the video a few times. I'm sure they are going to miss it now. The one reference that stands out in my mind is the Cohen Bros. movie, 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou', where George Clooney gets into a fight and is thrown out of Woolworths. Delmar says, "Everett was thrown out of Woolworths, but I don't know if it was just that one or all of them."

  • Excellent! An important piece of social history that will be more and more important as time moves on.

  • POUNDLAND!!!

  • LOLOL EPIC FAIL

  • I still go shopping in woolies every week :0) No I'm not mad

  • Woolworth's had a special smell which I liked: cheap-sweets-and-fresh-plastic.

  • i miss woolies

  • woolworths is the largest supermarket company in australia...

  • I miss the Bon Bon - anyone remember that? :(

  • Sweet wee video!

  • woolworth was the ebst shop miss pick N mix ell bad :( £2.99 and u go cimema and its £7.00 like wtf .and the last pick n mix from woolworths was bough on ebay for £14,000 :O

and tesco, sainburys poundland, priamrk, hmv are wanting to buy up their stores:(

  • i agree

  • Comment removed

  • haha i used to go to that exact woolworths

  • Well done,

It;'s such an awful shame, I too , like most people in the UK have grown up going to woolies, the high street will never be the same again.

Oh, and ignore the stupid negative comments about this film.

    Vas

  • Ah! You were too late for Aberystwyth's best ever shop. Humphrey Jones was a couple of doors further up Great Darkgate: evrything from battery powered robots and Hornby trains, to 6" nails, pots, pans and plates. The staff were 'gents' who wore brown coats and could give DIY advice. The place smelled of its paraffin heaters and the floorboards were scrubbed pine. Mind you, we still have a rubber plant bought from Aberystwyth Woolies in 1975, chosen 'cos it was the worst one on display!

  • i remember this too, used to go in and oggle the trains!

     thanks j

  • I still have my two locomotives from Humphrey Jones; a bit battered mind you and no tracks of course. Their battery operated robots would be worth a fortune now...

  • what a cock!!!!!

  • Get On With It

  • i remember going by there in chelmsford while in the UK , never knew what it was lol but i guess i do now , shame its closeing

  • Hey Jonathan, can you please remove the rap video from the video responds, I posted it by mistake :)

  • Woolworths is one of the first shops I remember as a kid. Remember the KP choc dips, the pick n mix and of course the record dept. in the days of vinyl and tapes.

  • i cant beleive that woolworths are going.i use to always look for a woolworhts eveytime i go somewhere new. No town is goin to be the same with out a woolies. i use to buy cds and dvds which where cheap and great thanks for doin this vid its great will miss woolies

    woolies 4 life

  • woolworths dominates australia

  • im from aberystwyth myself its packed all the time there and you cant move.and theres nothing there now :(

  • Im from the aberystwyth myself and gutted woolworths are closing down, mind you i did get lost there once or twice when i was little haha. Wondering if everyone who checks this video out could also check my video out, all of the videos include aberystwyth so check them out and maybe you will reconise some places. Thanks

  • Redcar woolies Biker, naked through shop on motorbike ??? girl click on 'Lordybrett'

  • Hey, i bought an advent calender from Woolworths just before it closed down - i couldn't believe it.......ALL THE CHUFFIN' WINDOWS WERE BOARDED UP ON IT :/

  • Top man for posting this. I can relate to this sentimental story as I bought my first 7 inch vinyl single in Woolworths Bletchley. It was the Wombles, Remember You're a Womble (not the dance mix).

If I was in the UK now I would video the store but I am now in Auckland, New Zealand.

    Very sad...

  • djshort. what you fail to realize is. that woolworths is in debt because of EUK. EUK took the money from the retail sector to buy from suppliers because the suppliers demanded the money up front.woolworths may be on its way, but its just the beginning.

  • Entertainment UK has also gone into administration because of the woolworths things, and thats why zavi's future is in the balance

  • I don't think Woolworth's (the brand name) will disappear! Too much interest has been taken by Sainsbury's, Tesco etc. Some company will see that, if managed correctly and managed better in a more modern way it will still remain, just under different ownership! Woolworth's own Entertainment UK who supply Zavvi and Sainsbury's etc with the majority of its digital entertainment. One of the biggest growing area's of a supermarket at the moment.

  • woolworths openend in 1908 and closes in 2008 thats 100 years

  • I myself have never had the privilege of shopping at a Woolworth's, granted they had closed in the area before my time, but I do totally respect what you are trying to do here J... if only the rest of the world could just slow down for a moment and live.

  • NO BIG LOSS!

They sold crap, Made in China rubbish.

There is NO room in 2008 for compassion in buisness.

    Survival of the fittest!

If I can buy the same item for half the price in Tesco, Then that is where I will buy it.

  • Wow That brought back memories from Woolworths at Houston Texas in downtown.

  • Thanks for the post I live in a small town In Indiana in the states all the old places are closing and putting up new buildings I am 45 years old. I I remember going into th4 5&10 stores and buying candy for a penny. We use to have a place called western auto and that where we bought are sneakers which the only kind you could buy was converse. keep up the good work johnathan

  • jeahh!! j´s vids in HD. :), wonder what people walking on the sidewalk were thinking when they saw Johnathan filming a store from across the street.haha nice one J

  • Although they don't sell PC games (which in my opinion is pretty crap) but I love this shop, and they've got all other stuff, like sweets and stationery goods. It's a shame they are closing down :(

Didn't know about 50% off sales, passed it today and didn't notice, everything probably is gone by now :(

  • mattd28 got to film inside

    You're losing you're touch J :)

  • eCONUMY IS KILLING EVERY ONE damn IT ALL! this sucks i just lost my job too

  • I remember Woolworth's in the US too. Over here they've been gone for quite some time.

  • Shame to see it go, and a shame around 2000 people could be put out of work at this time of year :-( Liverpool company too, bad times.

  • woolworths didthe best damn pic n mix

  • I used to love the pic n mix when I was little.

  • i still do i squash all the sweets down and eat them whilt im putting them in the pot

  • HMV next? I think that may be the next high street store going.

    !Peace

  • NOOOOOOOO not HMV i love that shop

  • i dont want woolworths to close baecause thats is the only place i can get my fav chocobar from witch is call milka in the puprel rapper and im sad its closing DJ MattyMan

  • ....and such atroshious spelling...

  • first C&A and now Woolworths - OMG what ever next

remember - practice and N Joy!!

oh btw - is that a nose ring?

  • the chances are that the rural wollys will survive and the city ones will get cut. people need the rural ones, the city ones just have lost their edge.

  • they were the last night street store to drop vinyl records. theres a though :-(

  • Totally Agree J!

There has been one in every area, I think the company are still looking for a buyer, and it may be saved...or return one day, you never know.

  • My Grandmother was a seamstre and as a little kid I use to tag along and she would by me a skooter pie or marshmello pie chocolate is my favorie that store carried evervy thing yes those were the days 20 yaers a go in Cali.

  • I remember going into that Woolworths with you. The FIRST time I was in the UK in 2003, that was a great store where you could buy everything a tourist needed, like the Ministry Of Sound Annual, Chocolates, Christmas Crackers, FHM, & the newest Cliff Richard callender. HA!

This last visit, there didn't seem to be anything worth while. Booths seems to be your new shop now. Didn't even notice if they had a Music Section?

  • BOOTS, rather

  • There are similar places Brian like Wilkinson, and I agree...Woolworths focus on items these days such as DVD's and Posters, stationary...rather than DIY Accesories.

    Practise and Enjoy!

  • It's quite sad really because it isn't only Woolworths closing, quite a few others are too.

You'd expect small shops to be going under, not national chains!

Another I know of is MFI furniture - they have rolled out the closing down banners! I saw it Wednesday as I went past.

  • they closed ours down yearsss ago and then another opened and its closing again, its not a bad shop but tbh i think it will just be forgotten when something new comes

  • when did you get that piercing?!

  • in N.Z the woolworths chain is owned by a brewery company,,, no wonder kiwis are piss heads,,,,lol

its a shame though... about woolworths,,, not the kiwis,,

  • Woolworths sells groceries here. but i get what you are trying to say.

  • I remember my parents talking about Woolworth also....Its really sad to see large stores like that close down. I live in California and right now Mervyns is closing..Hope the economy picks up in the next year or so

  • I felt the same when Montgomery Wards closed where I lived growing up. It was like a part of my childhood died that I couldn't do anything about. Also the whole mall that Montgomery Wards was in. They have remodeled since then which is a good thing for them. It was like a ghost mall for a while, a lot of stores left. But they have a target, golds gym and home depot there now.

  • Part 3/3:

P.S.: Your yesterdays BlogTV set was great! What was two last tracks (last but one was something like "I wont take it down, because" and last one was some speaking)? :)

  • Part 2/3:

But in the other handy we ...can look without sentiment at the situation. You have seen this vid: v=jnyAUZJZ29w and what guy in 0m 30s sayed? So it's like unadaptation to changes.

    All good to you!

  • Part 1/3:

Jonathan: You are great man my friend. You are right: Maybe we remind ourselves things, places and peoples from the past. Memories. Our brains work this way. I guess in the future I will think this way about you, just like I sometimes think about Sharon Redd or Luther Vandross...

  • Our Woolworth's (Paducah, KY, USA) closed in 1981. Mothball stench and KISS Halloween costumes is what Woolworth's means to me.

  • just means groceries in australia, nothing other then food!... and quite often shit food!

  • So sad..Its almost hard to imagine woolies

not being on the local high street anymore.

I am sure their will be no end of mobile phone

stores and the like to fill their place.

The worlds losing the plot if you ask me.

  • yea i know what ya mean j.memories go down if the building goes dwn,,,,,ur a legend mate

  • Jon in Canada we had a chain of stores known as Woolco, they were owned by Woolworth's in the US and by 1994-95 were sold to Walmart. My local store here in small town Nova Scotia was taken over by Walmart around that time. Not much has changed aside from the Walmart branding. I will say that as a Canadian for the store it was Woolco had the most amazing music department for a store that was not a music store. As a teen I know locally I would purchase many great House music CDs from that store.

  • Yea I remember Woolworth in New York ! The one near where I use to live as a child closed in the late 80's I had to be about 5 years old then. Thanks for the flash back memories of getting Hot Wheels toy cars with the doors that open from Woolworth : )

  • welshpool is the nearest one to me, i'll try get down there tomorrow

  • Our Woolworths Closed here 15-20 years ago. But I do remember shopping there as a kid and I always liked hiding in the racks of clothes.

  • ill probably be taking advantage of the woolworths bargains for christmas presents for my family :) (the aberystwyth one ofcourse as im a student here) :D

  • woolies closing down :O

  • i wanted to go and get some bargains but im skint lol

  • Damn almost 100 years thats sad bcuz when i was small my parents will take me to this park and and it close down like 2 years ago and this video remind me about that.

  • I wish I could make a video of our Woolworth's here in Cleveland, Ohio. But, it closed about 30 years ago. Our downtown is pretty much empty now (unfortunately). I do remember the good times there. The food counter, two floors of stuff to look at, etc. What a memory! Thanks!

  • Nice to see the video dedicated to the staff!.. I've worked there a while now, it's sad to see both it, and my job go... right before it's 100th birthday.

  • I made this video from my heart, i still remember going there and spending all of £5 on a tonka Toy and being so excited taking it home to play with. I also remember the Co-op next door. We forget so easily in this MP3 era. No sooner is the new mobile phone out , we want the next new one, perhaps we are wanting, moving too fast for our own good? j

  • True, I think it's a case of technology moving faster than the average person these days.

  • Woolworth's has been gone in the states for quite a few years. I do miss the old 5 and dime store. I can remember going back in the 70's with my grandfather and sitting at the litte dinner in the store having a milkshake while my grandmother shopped.

  • Great video! add &fmt=18 to the end of the video, The quality difference is night and day!

  • I mean to the end of the adress

  • I love Aberystwyth, & I love Woolworths too.

    RIP Woolworths.

  • what is woolworth. im in US
