  • yeah everyone needs to realize that the blues was the foundation of all music that is here today. so for all you dumbasses who like rock n roll and heavy metal the blues is what probly inspired them.

  • @trooshnizzle For all of us dumbasses? Most Rock and or Heavy Metal fans love the blues. People who don't understand that they themselves listen to and shouldn't be considered a fan of everything. I love Heavy Metal, Hair metal, Arena Rock, Thrash Metal as well as pretty much anything bluesy or has that subtle rock tip. Not all metal fans are idiots :p.

  • @fifis677 What they themselves listen to*

  • @fifis677 Too true about 90% of modern music would not exist if it was not for blues.

  • Das ist COOL!!! Die heutigen Rapper stehen im Schatten von Howlin Wolf`´s Coolness.

  • For those 56 ass-wipes who didn't "LIKE" this video; what the fuck are you doing looking at Howlin' Wolf blues music videos in the first place? What in the name of God did you expect to find here, "Tiptoe Through the Tulips"?

And I like the fuck out of Johnny Winter, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Page, Elmore (don't need to say HIS last name), and Duane Allman. But nobody can say that Wolf didn't do the damn thing like NObody else.

  • Here's a tribute to the nuances of the blues; compare my transcript of this video with published lyrics of Wolf's original 1956 'Smokestack Lightning'' recording (easily found all over the web):

    ******************************************

Howlin' Wolf (with Willie Dixon and Hubert Sumlin) performs Smokestack Lightning. Live England 1964.

    (youtubeBLAHBLAHBLAH/watch?v=A1FK620bS7A)

The number that's goin out now, friend, is Smokestack Lighnin'.

Oh, the train I ride on

  • @shedipsync I just saw that clip before coming here. That is some great, great stuff. They were tearing it up.

  • Just heard this song used in an ad for erectile disfunction...

  • Only found out hubert was dead in the comments.

    GODDAMMIT!

  • Classic tune, right there.

  • Good shit right here!

  • I wish I could put about a thousand "likes" on this piece of music, and that someone would care one way or the other about Hutie Ledbetter!!!!!! This is pure Delta Blues art!!!!! Pure and simple THE BEST THERE IS OR WAS!!!!!!!!!!!!! His name should be revered and remembered for all time in some Smithsonian Library of Congress somewhere - or maybe someplace even more sacred.

  • This man is superb!!! Thanks Shirley for sharing this

fantastic artist!!! I'm sharing him with others now!!!

  • It was much more criminal when whites stole it than when blacks stole from each other. For one these songs were stories about a life that all blacks experienced, not whites. Blacks making music frequently worked together and shared ideas and material and even band members. Whites never shared the experiences of racism but reaped the benefits of it by stealing the credit for some amazing trends in music and gained financially more than any blacks that borrowed, stole or copied from other blacks.

  • @dawg96 True.......

  • He is one cool man.

  • @Miami1965258 IF you were smart, you would've considered the fact that a man who is half-white & half-black could father the child of a woman who is full blooded Indian....but of course you failed to catch that....

  • I'm not trying to be racist or anything, but it seems to me that the best musicians from let's say the 30s to the 60s were all black. Robert Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, the list goes on.

  • this shit right here, is music

  • @MidiMurderer It's still there, you just have to sort through more crap now.

  • What a great tune.Howlin Wolf had it

  • the wolf was tryin' to yodel but came out howlin'... and he was great!

  • RIP Hubert Sumlin

And....Jimi Hendrix technically wasn't black, he was 1/3 Cherokee, 1/3 White, and 1/3 Black......

  • @SilvioManfredDante85 How the hell can you be 1/3 anything??? It takes two to tango dude so you're ancestry is always going to be a multiple of 2

  • @SilvioManfredDante85 TECHNICALLY, that makes Jimi about the same as the overwhelming majority of "black" people in this country.

In any case, though, this is a Howlin' Wolf/Hubert Sumlin thing, so let's focus on that.

  • R.I.P Hubert Sumlin

  • love it love it love it just amazing

  • RIP Hubert Sumlin

  • I get so depressed when I think about how I'll never see any of these greats in person.

  • RIP from Spain

  • RIP Hubert. One of the true originals. Had the pleasure of seeing him a few times in the last couple years. Never disappointed.

  • 80 years for Hubert...so long, he'll be playing with Howlin' somewhere in spirit now.

  • So long, Hubert.

  • God bless you Hubert, rest in peace!

  • R.I.P Hubert Sumlin, your blues legacy will never be forgotten!

  • RIP Hubert Sumlin

  • @garryinmaine ...I cant belive I missed that Hubert Sumlin died on the 4th of this month.I get my news from msn and if it was on there I missed it.Could be they didnt think it was big story...........But Hubert Sumlin was a big story and still is.His guitar changed everything.

  • 53 people had erections lasting lomnger than 4 hours.

  • wheres the rest of the concert? sure would like to see it!!

  • Hey would ya look at the dislike bar?!?! No?? Oh I can't see it either :D

  • The base player looks very excited.

  • that real music . those days was great .

  • This is absolutely fantastic. The black community is vital player in global culture, its incredible, exciting, and incalculable contribution is a tsunami of creativity, sentimentality, and human wealth. Musical geniuses such as these are directly responsible for our cultural heritage, without them the music probably would not be so unique as it is, it deserves to be cultivated, appreciated, and certainly has a place in the heritage of humanity. For things how are you worth to live. Thanks AFRICA

  • Howlin is my fav blues player of all time, the man and the voice.. God only knows.

  • It's really interesting, here in america they didn't hit big, in Britain they were huge. Gotta love those Brits!

  • so nothing is too crazy

  • this song is phenomenal, nothing more to say.

  • Whooohooooo <3<3<3

  • Wolf and Sumlin are my fucking heros.

  • I am a metal head, but you cant deny this music is a huge influence on hard rock and metal. And just try to keep your feet from movin during this ..love it!

  • @Revanjj I am glad people realize this. Puts a smile on my face in this world of Pop Garbage thats out there. Kudos to you, and keep rockin the horns...i also love metal..

  • You can listen to blues music, TILL THE DAY YOU DIE!!!

  • Love this! Been awhile since I listened.

  • I'm watchin Stein

  • Stein brought me here too, blues baby!

  • Rick Stein brought me here!

  • goota love someone that could climb away from being shoe less, and living under a house and saying to himself that he had worth and had something to sing about...lord knows for me...

  • love this...used to go to after hours clubs in Omaha and heard "music" I had never heard before...could get lost in it experience... great music, and great food...then the sun comes up...and you go home.

  • @20thcenturysir you do have a point. White ppl have stolen black ppls music to put it to their name and get all the credit for it. The beach boys are an excellent example

  • people on youtube just look at popular comments and think along time about them to try and prove any part of it wrong no matter how miniscule, trying to make themselves appear more intelligent infront of everyone. i love rock aswell as the blues. and im not even black to that other guy who replied to me, so why dont you youtube people try posting insightful comments yourselves instead of just putting other peoples comments down, missing the point of the comment entirely. obviously music evolves.

  • May the Gods bless The Wolf!

  • Through the decades I've sung the praises of the incredible contributions of Black folks to music. That said, it's simply false & divisive for commenter 20thCenturySir to say all the white musicians stole their music. All music builds on what came before. It deserves to be called theft only when proper credit is not given to those who deserve it. A great many Whites do deserve to be called thieves of music, & others do not. For example, Eric Clapton is no thief.
  • Now....THAT's BAD ASS BLUES BABY!

  • fucking hell man,the wolfman is huge

  • @ty3165 lol yeah he was a big man.

  • @Keeiman i read an atricle somewhere when jagger and richards met him in a hotel in new york, the stones were touring america in the 70,s and they were staying in the same hotel. when tey both seen the size of him they were standing there open mouthed a sheer mountain of a man

  • @ty3165 yeah thats awesome. my grandparents knew him. I remember them telling me stories of him, that is was a tall as a doorway.

    He was 6'6 near 300pds.

  • @Keeiman bloody hell that is big

  • lol black people in the 20th century were the greatest musicians especially from the 1900-1950's because they were so oppressed in society, there the ones who have something to sing about, and you can hear it clearly through the blues. Thats why all the white musicians stole their music in following generations cause its so damn good, it went to rock n' roll (led zeppelin, the doors, cream, jimi hendrix etc.) and has just been changing through the years since

  • Comment removed

  • @20thCenturySir Seriously, Bo Diddley, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, the list goes on.

  • @20thCenturySir No one stole anything. Music cannot be stolen, taken, or removed.

  • Comment removed

  • @20thCenturySir so.. rap would be a whole lot better if we were still as backwards as we were in the 50's? interesting. let's go get some slaves my honkey! we must save popular music through racism!

  • @20thCenturySir

Notice this was recorded in England!! This is the simplified version of the story: Blues greats couldn't get a gig in USA, because blues was ignored by white audiences and Black audiences had moved over to the smoother sounds of the likes of Nat King Cole. These guys were treated with great respect by the British and John Mayall etc sowed the seeds of the Rolling Stones, Clapton and the others. These guys made it big in USA and promoted the music, cleaned up for the new age.

  • @20thCenturySir

ALL art and technology borrows from it's predecessors. Why can't we simply appreciate the roots of the music we've grown up with without all the lame racial overtones?

  • @20thCenturySir I'm actually watching this because I was watching a show about "heavy metal evolution" and how classical music, jazz, rock n' roll and BLUES influenced it :P

  • @20thCenturySir

The only thing that stings in your logic is "stole". If we can learn from from each other, we can grow as individuals and in this case musicians.

Remember, there are only two types of music. Good and bad.

And if we can learn from those who are the best.. lets learn to become one of the best.

Personally, I believe that the whole learning process is part of what we call "quality of life". Quality of life became priceless with Hubert Sumlin.

    RIP.

    s/learn/steal/

  • @20thCenturySir Actually, blacks stole from blacks much worse than whites. If they were alive today Son House, Kokomo Arnold and Leroy Carr could all sue the pants off Robert Johnson for stealing their stuff. Ah, but it's only criminal when whites do it, right?

  • @20thCenturySir

Fair point, but I think your forgetting something, Jimi Hendrix was black . .

  • There is absolutely no sound like the BLUES. Its ferocious ,mean , soulful and uncompromisingly true

  • @Planetcaravan56 just like metal

  • mike tysons dad

  • HOwlin' Wolf remains The most powerful singer and player ever. He put it all in each song. This was his trademark song. i was introduced to Wolf as a young man by a fellow who tended bar at Gabe's in Seattle. He came in early mornings and I was there to listen to the music on their great Juke box. This man showed me who to listen to, Howlin' Wolf, Lightning Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and more. Being A dumb kid from Montana I had never heard this and listened carefully before. I love it still

  • Howlin' Wolf blows pansies like Metallica and Slipknot right out of the water. They just can't compare in pure badassness.

  • @koboldasylum Dont EVEN compare, noone else compares, so why do you? Slipknot is pathetic, But Metallica has amazing songwriting and music structures SPECIFICALLY for heavy metal. Howlin Wolf is 100% blues, not Heavy metal, they shouldnt be compared. Howlin Wolf had the most powerful voice in the world

  • the baddest blues song i have ever seen performed... epic .....

  • The groove of this song is beyond belief..Hubert´s lick is blues to the bone..Can´t hear it on this recording though..

  • any idea what chords hes playin here?

  • @FoxyMama no chords, he slides down some strings and hits a few blue notes, theres a tutorial for it on youtube.

  • those rings on his fingers are probably like size XXL and still only fit on his pinkies... what a giant. and a legend of a musician.

  • He was the Big Bad Wolf!

  • so Be ready to jump to the world full of pleasure

  • I'm from Texas and just a white boy but I love me some blues baby.

  • @FAIRTIMDLANDFREEK i'm a blues-loving asian from Louisiana. does that sound weird?

  • First time listing to this.I love it!!!!!!!

  • thatt song came from somewhere deep within Wolf. Thanks for sharing the music

  • i bought the single in 1964. My olds were outraged that I didn't buy something more suitable for my 14th Birthday! I still have the single, scratched and noisy after all this time. Still sounds great though

  • goosebumps

  • The authentic blues sound of America struck a powerful chord with English/European audiences of the early sixties.........and it still resonates down the decade's.

  • saw the wolf at the avalon in the crowd having a great time, next thing he's on stage doing smokestack, best version ever.

  • Jazzy
