Great Maria!!! May your suffering soul rest in peace with all the angels... may you forget those pains which led you to death...sing Maria in Heaven for the blessed souls...like yours...
Callas' voice here is not as steady as it could be at this time. The 1954 studio version is more secure vocally, though she never could achieve a true piano on "Invan la pace" near the end. It amazes me that Callas and Tebaldi could have been compared at all. Each excelled in different repertoire. Callas commanded the bel canto flexibility that Tebaldi never had. Tebaldi had a creamy sound that was never Callas' to command. Both are immortal.
I have this interesting concert live recorded in old 33 album.the whole concert sounds distorced and the speed needs to be adjusted.Great rendition,of course.
It may have just been a concert and hopefully then they had a mic and speakers. It seems difficult otherwise (have you seen the theater?). Neither Callas nor Tebaldi are terribly successful with that phrase but they both do relatively well in the aria and the opera. For this aria though I like Meta Seinemeyer, strangely, and her time was a little before Callas.
@Arya2611 This is a bit out of character for me, but here it goes... Criticism is a neutral term, being analytical, positive, negative, illuminating, etc. All comments posted so far are by serious opera lovers, from whom we all learn. Your profile says "Through you-tube I have been able to discover, and learn to like, stuff I never thought I would..." May you continue to learn and discover more about operatic recordings, voices, and supreme artists like Callas and Tebaldi. Tanti auguri. GC
Actually, in English, "criticize" is most often associated with negative connotations. Critique, on the other hand, can be positive, negative, or neutral.
There is nothing no worse than they "callasian" staunch, no good does his favorite diva and they reacts with enormous violencia. They don't love the art, love his diva without knowing why. They are like throwing shit a ventilator
Callas is in fairly good voice here, although pushes the opening phrase. She fumbles with the text (Cruda sventura m'astringe ahimè a languir... Profondo il mio soffrir). Miraculously, she joins the high B of "Invan la pace" with "quest'alma" in a single breath, something she does not do in her 1954 commercial recording. In 1957 she tackled Barbiere, Sonnambula, Bolena, Ifigénie, Turandot, Manon Lescaut, Medea, and Ballo. We will not see her likes again. Bravissima!
@InBoccaChiusa I too noted the "fumbling" of the text. Callas is what she is, but would recommend that you listen to Tebaldi's performance of this aria. Her "invan' la pace" is the most perfect example of a singer going from full voice to head voice that has ever been heard.
@VivaRenata Indeed, I have heard various performances of this aria by the supreme Tebaldi. It was one of her greatest roles. I am fortunate to have seen her in recital and as Desdemona. She was simply exquisite. GC
Peace, peace, my God.

O, mio dio !! I didn't know this recording was available...It IS absolutely amazing !! She uses wrong lyrics but what an emotion and expression !!
her final Maledizione is terrific, it gives you goosebumps and is the curse of a mad woman in love.
No, please, do not even try to compare anybody else to her
Mio dio, indeed,... as already said

wow, I'd almost hate to be an opera singer, EVERY little detail is sooo criticized.

I do agree that critics are edifying.

I believe this is the only live recording of her Forza Leonora, a role in which she did wonders although she did not sing it often.
