A MESSAGE TO EVERYONE. I posted the comment that David is referring to. I also have been watching him and listening to his music for about 3 years now, and have purchased his songs via iTunes.
This question was purely from a social perspective, I enjoy understanding people, and I am definitely not the ignorant person that some of these comments are blatantly stating. It was purely curiosity.
Please Thumbs Up this so other people can read it. Thanks.
I can't believe this sht is still even an issue... We all bleed the same, some of us just have a bit more pigment than others....WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?!
So what if this guys friends are mainly asian, I'd so most people's friends tend to be of the same ethnic origin as themselves. Everyone tends to gravitate to other people with similar family backgrounds and upbringings. As long as we don't completely ghetto-ize ourselves it's all fine.
i live in the land of the multiracial..... CANADA!! and we love everyone.
i have white friends, i have asian friends, i have indian friends. WHO CARES?! whatever race you are, it doesn't matter, it's who you are not what you look like. i am asian and im proud of it!
I don't just listen to you for the music, you're incredibly talent, but a genuine, nice and fair dude into the bargain , and thats why you're my favourite guy on Youtube, love ya David!
My only complain about this video is that its too nice. Call it out for what it is: double standard. Whites hang out with other whites, don't make much efforts to include Asians in their groups, but when we do it, its "weird." I am open to making white friends, so long as I feel I can express myself and my personality accurately. Many whites have this stereotype beforehand that makes it hard for me to do so. Subtle racism ftw.
How bout Margaret Cho, Ken Jeong, Maggie Q(yeah, I know: half), Grace Park, Daniel Dae Kim, Far East Movement, Julie Chen, Apl.de.ap(BEP; yeah half again, but still), Olivia Munn, Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Yao Ming, Masi Oka, Leyna Nguyen, Yo-Yo Ma, Apollo Ohno, Bruno Mars, Lucy Liu, Brenda Song, Tila Tequila, Vera Wang, Kimora Lee, Amerie, Utada Hikaru, Jackie Chan, Ang Lee, Jin. Nope, there are no Asians in entertainment at all...
Just because people who wants to hang out with their own race has nothing to do with insecurity. I'm getting sick and tired of people assuming or tacking things they can't explain with insecurity of one's self. Do you know why I don't want to hang out with bunch of whiteys? They act stupid and barbaric. When we go out to eat, they always ask, "oooo...what's that" or "how do you eat that"? It's like bitch/dude figure it out yourself. I do that to them to see what their reaction is.
Okay what you're saying is a little immature and offensive. I'm asian, and even though I have friends within my race, 2 of my best friends are from another race. And yes, one of them is WHITE. I can't believe you can group "whiteys" together and collectively call them barbaric and stupid! Are you serious!? That's just plain ignorant to me. And your reasoning, is also quite stupid. I'm sure there are many different types of food you've never seen before and want to know what it was
Hey, I don't give a shit whether you're Asian or not. What? Just because you're Asian, I'm supposed to accept your opinion. HA. Listen, banana. I know you think it's cool to be open minded by having friends outside of your own race. But you know what, no body thinks that way. You know deep inside, you hate the fact that you Asian men are treated like trash in the white society. Don't you remember how your Asian ancestors were oppressed by your best friends ancestors? No?
I'm Ethiopian, and my boyfriend of 2 years in Japanese. We were both born in America. I always get mistaken for a Blasian (Half black, half asian) , even though I'm 100% Black. But when people find out about my race, they get kind of critical about me and my boyfriend. Honestly, I think we look good together and we have a great relationship, but people can't seem to look past our color differences. I really like what you said about race and how we should all be colorblind. I hope people listen!
@femaleasian1 Where I live, (Seattle in case you were wondering), interracial relationships are not rare at all. Some people just have ignorant feelings against relationships like mine. And it's not only african-asian relationships. Black-white, white-asian, asian-hispanic and all interracial couples go through the same thing at least once.
but I hang out with a LOT of asians, and I'm white, so you know how you said 'hanging out with only your race makes you insecure' or something? Does that mean I'm....insecure? Idk haha
But I just wanted to say that I agree with you here :)
I'm white and live in Australia, My whole town of 300,000 are White, my best friends are black. I want to be black, the white kids call me black, my fav music artists are black, I'm into black girls, every girlfriend I have had was black. I really love every race but I can't seem to bond with my own race. Anybody know why?
If we can recognize these differences and channel them through positive mediums like music, art, technology, and education, we can grow as a human race. But not until we try to understand why it is that White Suburbia happened. Or why so many Asians are in the UC system. Or many other things. There is a historical context LoggyWD, that you are simply not taking into consideration. We can't ignore these canyons of separation between races. Or else how are we ever to find ways to close them up?
I think LoggyWD is trying to unify all of humanity into a singular organism. Yet he doesn't understand that our differences are what makes us stronger and adaptable and ever-evolving. If you see humanity as only one thing all of the time (of course there are times where unity is beneficial) how are we ever to help each other grow and prosper? We all have different needs, wants, desires, purposes and it is because of these differences that make us not only stronger but more likely to clash.
I am a 25 year old white girl and I think it has a lot to do with finding a similar culture to your own. Now I'm working for a maidcafe with 90% asian people and while they still tease me about having big blue eyes, and I had to get used to removing my shoes to visit their houses, I always feel comfortable because they are my friends. That's what's most important to me.
You really shouldn't let these comments get to you. Normally the first person to mention he has a problem with a group's race, is he, himself, racist. So don't let it bug you, it's that one guy that has a problem, not you.
im a white teenager in england and have very few white friends. in fact asian people are usually the most interesting to me. i love your music and you are the kind of person i like to make friends with. you are a role model. peace
great video. you explained it perfectly that race should not be considered when dealing with friends. your friends are your friends b/c of their personality! i'm Haitian and i have black, white, asian, hispanic friends and i love them all equally =]
i feel you david, but that is the individual's fault. Everyone is brothers and sisters, we treat each other differently because of these factors. 1) Color/ different from others in your community 2)Language Barriers and maybe more. Everyone should treat each other with respect, care and most importantly LOVE! No one does that, no one does that you know why? cuz that individual doesn't know how to love one another. It's in the bible people! Love like how God loves US! you all know the stories.
i'm white but i really like asians, but i don't have any any asian friends :( there are some asian students in my town, but i don't know how to get to know them, i'm afraid that when i for example smile to them, they would think i'm laughing of them, or i stare because they look different... actually i guess there are just a few % of ppl in my country that aren't white... any pieces of advice? :) my nickname may be confusing, but i'm not asian, i just like that name. great vid David :)
ya know.........I never thought twice about you being asian........it wasn't an issue.........you're very creative and that is what captivated me :) Thanks for entertaining me David.
All one needs to do is be self-aware. If you just removed his image and all that was left was the music, and we'd know him simply as David C, none of this would have been an issue. Anything else that one allows to overshadow the sounds of his voice and guitar was simply an idea that that listener creates in his mind and has nothing to do with what he was listening to. Just listen to the music and let everything else go. It's that simple.
And I HATE when David or Phil post videos of concerts or events with a dominantly Asian American audience, & white people post comments like, "Whoa...why so many Asians?" or "This convention must suck cos it's only full of Asians!"
But if I said, "Whoa, why so many white people at this concert? It must not be a good concert because it's all whites," white people would say I'm crazy & overreacting!
I love Youtube because I can FINALLY see Asian Americans who are discriminated from mainstream.
@oewnaynailf Wow, that last part is sooo true. I've never seen an Asian or Black or whatever other minority race there is leave a racist comment on a White person's video. I'm not saying there aren't any out there or that minorities are better people, just that you can really see how many people still have a problem with integration to this day.
I'm so glad that David mentioned that the reason why the kid felt "awkward" to see a group of Asian Americans together is because he's not used to seeing it on any medium. Whenever a black person or Asian American person critiques a movie for not having diversity or states that they also feel "awkward" when only whites are in shows, white people freak out & say that we are being picky & overreacting. But the second it's turned around, whites criticize just as badly. Doesn't feel good, does it?
@oewnaynailf Not so, more Asian films are being made now that China has big money to put in and make , Disneyland just bought 'the secret of the magic gourd'. Asians have always featured in film. One possible issue are the cultural, physical and linguistic barriers. Perhaps many people in the west have a hard time making out life in the west or are so bombarded, literally, with of ten creditable Western offerings for art / culture that its just.. "too big an effort to go Asian."
@ray I'm not talking about Asian films in Asia. My post is in regard to Asian Americans in mainstream American cinema. In Hollywood, rarely do we see AA actors outside the archetypical roles of martial artist, foreigner, or nerd. Why can't there be romantic comedies in which the heartthrob star just happens to be an Asian American who "gets the girl" at the end? The concern is not about "going Asian;" it's about accurately portraying & accepting AAs who are ignored in mainstream American cinema.
@oewnaynailf your response is emotive and has not reflected on the content of my reply. In the Magic Gourd we are happy to see the man get the girl, an on screen Asian romance, same as in Hero. We agree on time as a factor to social change, we have a saying here, "fighting for black rights isolates blacks from their rights". Demonstrate your cause, write a script that deals with racism, as I have done, go to blogspot. com The Creature - Ray Mizzi
Yea your right I think nowadays there is too much emphasis on race, I don't think it should matter. I have friends of all color. And if your a racist grow up, most racist I have had the misfortune to know are losers, they don't really have much to offer the world, and they are pretty much recluses.
HA im asian and i go to a scholl where there are 7 asians in our whole school which has 400 something people sometimes there racist to me but there racist to each other and to themselves they know that its wrong to be racist and apologize to me i guess that being racist is part of there personality and since i used to go to a non racist school, going to my current school for the first day was a shock cus so many people were racist
i will be your friend. i'm black and samoan and i live in albuquerque...but i like your music and your thought patterns. do your thing bro. do your thing.
Hey David, that's a great message. I think it is mostly because mainstream America aren't use to seeing Asian, as you mentioned. I have never seen an Asian guy kiss on screen in America.
As an Asian American, I love Youtube, because of people like you and Wong Fu Production. It is the only medium where other Asian people can see other Asian people being human and multifaceted. I wish most American can be as open minded to Asian people
@victormusicfy I agree completely. Asian American men are completely desexualized in American mainstream films, while Asian American women are hypersexualized in mainstream films (i.e. portrayed as lusting after white men or as submissive nymphos for black men).
I've heard many people criticize Youtube as having too many Asian (American) personalities present, but maybe it's a sign that people are annoyed with how mainstream either ignores or stereotypes an entire demographic of people!
@oewnaynailf People have criticized youtube for having too many Asian American personalities?? That's CRAZY. They're certainly not the majority here. Maybe to certain idiots, "too many" means more than 10 or 20, because anything beyond those numbers must feel like a threat to the "master race."
The staff at youtube doesn't select whose videos go up on this site. There are policies everyone must follow, but aside from that basically anybody can upload what they want no matter who they are.
That was a really long rant LoggyWD. It doesnt matter what century you were born in, there is always racial and cultural tensions in any given society. America is no different with its many cultures, but we define them to try and celebrate these differences for the most part. O and I agree w/ u David lol, I love people for their personality not their color, I forget I'm of a different race sometimes with my friends lol
Not yet finished. My cable broke down just now. People are ignorant. They don't pursue the truth but submit meekly to maltreatments. What I really mean is, equality is something that even communist morons do not believe in. The alternative for it is called impossibility. It is reality, the bare truth that we honestly want. We deserve the right to be aware of what we should know. Then we can pursue justice. Unfortunately, America simply forbids it. People are just too ignorant to think about it.
"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." Whenever I heard people chatting about a turban or beard of an Arab, I thought of this joke.Being an Arab you could not ascend a plane without a random search. But why only the Muslims are enemies? The truth is, as long as you keep you mouth shut and head down, you are or at least pretend not like a menace to their power, you are safe. But who are "they"? Are they Jews? Are they Anglos?
Americans classify people's race as Hispanic or Latino
Asian
American Indian
Hawaiian native
Black
White
Are racial background is required as basic information in numerous situations.
In many countries of good reputation for human right treatment, this is actually considered offensive. Human right abuse exists everywhere in American society. And people seem to more than accept but welcome and embrace it.
Outside the human race, you have lots of friends?
Oh, I am amazed at that.
What types are they?
Canine? Swine?
You're saying "C'mon, man. You know what I meant." But you're a racialist, not to be confused with racist.
Check it out in a fucking dictionary. Make clear the definition of RACE. There is no racial difference in human. The theory has been abandoned for centuries.
Why do we still...?
Because you live in the USA, the nation of morons.
tough subject for david to touch on and he did really well. you have to understand that minorities grow up with racism, it doesn't matter what city or state your from. its because of people like eriktheloser comment's that we don't trust white people and that creates barriers with whites that do want to be friends with asians and if eriktheloser wants to be ethnocentric about then its good enough for me to hang out with only asians because our communities are the best.
I have noticed most where asians but i never thought that..ya kno u only hung out with asians lol. I only kno u from YT but from the songs and a few of your coment posts i have watched..i think you are a realy good guy and u are someone i wuld like to hang around with ya know. I think there are a lot of stupid people out there and they get to me but you are cool. and i dont mean stupid as in uneducated i mean as in those who refuse to reason. all in all. in a non homo way lol i love you :D
i dont find it arkward at all. why would you?? im white.. why would you find it arkward. people are brought up with their own race. nothig arkward about that
i always try to reach my friendship beyond the boundaries...matter of fact the first friend i had when i moved to my new school was black! and yes it was a girl if you guys were asking....it wasn't anything personal like crushing or anything but more like a friend in need! and the second was mixed with pretty much EVERYTHING! then the third and forth were asian so my race came last! and it's usually the other way around.....yes i also have mexican friends...so yea......i have all friends!!!!
dude race doesn't exist, its a social construct, depeche mode said it best "people are people" that all. My point is that I like what you are saying but it saddens me that its even necessary for you to have to say it. Kudos to you for speaking up though.
When I turn my TV on I only see a white and black images..I don't see any yellow colors...I am sure my TV is a color TV but it shows only black and white...so I turned it off and took it to local pawn shop...youtube is better than TV
Yeah, you watch too many anti east asian movies, shows and go outside and see it and shocked...lol real life is different in comparison to zionist hollywood movies...you sit there all day watch these lame media shows and come out "WTF?" wow...
Its funny how sometimes things work out. I am white, but my 3 best friends are Vietnamese and most of my my good friends are Korean and Chinese. It is just that I liked them better than the white people in my school. Its the individual people that count. Your videos are pretty cool, keep it up! =D
As someone who's had the advantage of growing up around different cultures and races, it really doesn't matter to me what race a person is...If I like you I like you, if I don't...well, like you said, it's because you're an 'ick-day' (and yes, I just used Pig Latin to say dick) :-)
Glad you spoke about this. I for one an very happy to see a lot more Asians on YouTube and music sites doing entertainment. I have found over the years that many of my Asian entertainment friends were shunned by their families for doing music/art etc. I think you are doing an awesome job David... regardless of your race. You simply ROCK!
I know what ya mean.. it is true that I hardly see any asians in mainstream TV in Australia.. never really thought about it before. I hang out with Chinese people because I find that I relate to them better.. I am non-asian Australian.. *shrugs*
I mean.. there's Jay Chou.. but even after he came to Sydney for the concert earlier this year, still no one knows who he is.. and he is HUGE in asia (whether or not everyone likes his music or not).
That's my favorite quote.. "if i dont like you because your a dick." that my line. l0lz. but its okay, I am asian too and people thinks i am hispanic. Very odd...
Come on people who cares about what race you are just love one another... we are all the same. So don't be a DICK! l0lz
haha i only hav azn friends...well i only hav azn BEST friends....i hav a few white friends..but we're not THAT close...so yea....i don't kno y..but i don't think it's cuz im 'insecure'...haha like the vid ^_^
Hey! You're don't have any indian friends? aww well i'm indian i'll be yer friend! But the music is awesome, and i'm a particular fan of use somebody and i'm yours cover songs. But keep doing yer thing and know that you have atleast 1 Indian (dot not the feather) fan!
I agree with you about there not being many Asians in entertainment. I keep finding all these amazingly talented people on youtube, like you and Aldrine Guerrero, people I've never heard of before but who should be BIG because of how talented they are. I can't help but think it's because they are Asian. That seems to be the one group that gets left out of the entertainment industry. If you were white, black or Hispanic, I think you would already have a major contract. But maybe I'm wrong.
No matter where you are, race will always be an issue. Thanks to the internet, it helps to show people like David to a different race that Asian or other ethnicity are actually all the same. Lots of Asian Youtube stars, which is good because few years ago there arent no such thing. So thanks David for breaking that barrier and help those that are secluded within just their own race to understand and see the bigger picture.
lol i love how throughout the video you fumble around for the right words to use on this delicate subject but then you said with absolute confidence "if i don't like you, it's because you're a d!ck" XD lol
I don't understand why it would be "awkward", as a white person, to see asian guys hanging out together. Why does it matter? Listen to his music, that's what you subscribed to him for... people need to learn to lighten up and coexist.
hey you know what....i think that he's just a bit insecure...be proud of being asian!!!hahah...like you know...christine gambito....heheh...she's an asian...a flipino like me...
i agree with what you said...like just be yourself...be comfortable...in order for others to be comfortable with you...also that we share the same principle...if i like that person...i like him/her...but if i don't that person's just way too cocky or...he's "just being a dick"(quote--unquote)....
hey david i totally understand where you are coming from. i am afrocaribbean and i've lived in the states for a while and i choose to live my life in a color blind fashion. and it is not weird for asians to hang out with other asians. much respect due for actually responding lots of people would have just brushed off the comment. always a fan.!!
I'm a white guy and I have 3 best friends. Ones white ones black and the others asian. But I have ton's of friends of all race's but I know what'cha mean David. ^^ Keep up the great music.
I am Australian and was born here yet I am often asked what country I come from. I have to put out more job applications than white Australians. David will be classified as Asian despite his music, with consumption driven by the western worlds image of music and musicians. Choi has a sound like Jason Mraz, Jeff Buckley, Jack Johnson and could mature into something universally needed but his stereotype will delimit unless by big wave we create a niche for him in popular music, change the world DC
The "big wave" to create a niche for someone like David Choi may not be necessary. Even if the public or the media labels him, I believe that the following he will continue to build can negate all of that. If a black man can be president in a country where 50 years ago he wouldn't have even been allowed to piss in the same bathroom as whites, then having an Asian American music star in the US is not hard to imagine. All I can say is, thank God for youtube and the internet!
music should be based on its expressive and not the social merit but music is a common social reflective so this will always nullify itself. It would have to be a social trend to accept beauty without classification or creed. Also, if I may put forward what I believe the best view, Barak is not Black or white, just a PERSON. I believe the latter to be the lesson. The internet has changed social evolution, but society has evolved to become mixed with technological advancement, see mores theory.
@raygabmiamizzi yes, time may be the main factor. The internet, which is the main argument here and not music, is showing that race and views of race has changed. Also you point toward not music, which is art, but ethic, or social ethics - the science of 'humanity' and music which is ' expression of the human condition'. Ethics, I believe you will find, is very poorly achieved and overshadowed by capitalism. David Choi may be able to make a mark here.
some people should really take some time to open them selves up to something different once and a while and grow the fuck up instead of dissing others because of their race seriously its people like you that fuks the world up
if you only got love for your own race then that only leaves space to discriminate and to discriminate only generates hate and when you hate you get irate. can't you see thats how anger works and operates? wtf is your problem iminlikelost? just because someone is different you make fun of them? some people are so fuking narrow minded it pisses me off that we have people that are like that and can't just accept someone thats different for who they are and not what they are or how they look...
my girlfriend is asian you ugly bitch, how ignorant are you to say something so white trash like that? i hope you and your family dies and rots in hell you racist cunt
hahahha u got owned u dumb fag, keep ur racist comments to urself, wat did ur dumb ass think was gonna happen when u call david choi a chink? go back to ur trailer redneck

i guess everyone in this world should marry a person with different races ..problem solved ( just a solution and im kidding^_^)
rezz00788 1 year ago

That's what's most important to me.
and btw I think you're adorable David. <3

You really shouldn't let these comments get to you. Normally the first person to mention he has a problem with a group's race, is he, himself, racist. So don't let it bug you, it's that one guy that has a problem, not you.

i feel you david, but that is the individual's fault.

I love Youtube because I can FINALLY see Asian Americans who are discriminated from mainstream.
oewnaynailf 1 year ago 7
@oewnaynailf Wow, that last part is sooo true. I've never seen an Asian or Black or whatever other minority race there is leave a racist comment on a White person's video. I'm not saying there aren't any out there or that minorities are better people, just that you can really see how many people still have a problem with integration to this day.
Kayclaire519 1 year ago
I'm so glad that David mentioned that the reason why the kid felt "awkward" to see a group of Asian Americans together is because he's not used to seeing it on any medium. Whenever a black person or Asian American person critiques a movie for not having diversity or states that they also feel "awkward" when only whites are in shows, white people freak out & say that we are being picky & overreacting. But the second it's turned around, whites criticize just as badly. Doesn't feel good, does it?
oewnaynailf 1 year ago 14
@oewnaynailf Not so, more Asian films are being made now that China has big money to put in and make , Disneyland just bought 'the secret of the magic gourd'. Asians have always featured in film. One possible issue are the cultural, physical and linguistic barriers. Perhaps many people in the west have a hard time making out life in the west or are so bombarded, literally, with of ten creditable Western offerings for art / culture that its just.. "too big an effort to go Asian."
raygabmiamizzi 1 year ago

I wish most American can be as open minded to Asian people
victormusicify 2 years ago 2
@victormusicfy I agree completely. Asian American men are completely desexualized in American mainstream films, while Asian American women are hypersexualized in mainstream films (i.e. portrayed as lusting after white men or as submissive nymphos for black men).
I've heard many people criticize Youtube as having too many Asian (American) personalities present, but maybe it's a sign that people are annoyed with how mainstream either ignores or stereotypes an entire demographic of people!
oewnaynailf 1 year ago
@oewnaynailf People have criticized youtube for having too many Asian American personalities?? That's CRAZY. They're certainly not the majority here. Maybe to certain idiots, "too many" means more than 10 or 20, because anything beyond those numbers must feel like a threat to the "master race."
The staff at youtube doesn't select whose videos go up on this site. There are policies everyone must follow, but aside from that basically anybody can upload what they want no matter who they are.

LoggyWD 2 years ago
Americans classify people's race as Hispanic or Latino
Asian
American Indian
Hawaiian native
Black
White
Are racial background is required as basic information in numerous situations.
In many countries of good reputation for human right treatment, this is actually considered offensive. Human right abuse exists everywhere in American society. And people seem to more than accept but welcome and embrace it.

"I have lots of friends outside your race".
LoggyWD 2 years ago
tough subject for david to touch on and he did really well. you have to understand that minorities grow up with racism, it doesn't matter what city or state your from. its because of people like eriktheloser comment's that we don't trust white people and that creates barriers with whites that do want to be friends with asians and if eriktheloser wants to be ethnocentric about then its good enough for me to hang out with only asians because our communities are the best.

I keep finding all these amazingly talented people on youtube, like you and Aldrine Guerrero, people I've never heard of before but who should be BIG because of how talented they are. I am Australian and was born here yet I am often asked what country I come from. I have to put out more job applications than white Australians. David will be classified as Asian despite his music, with consumption driven by the western worlds image of music and musicians. Choi has a sound like Jason Mraz, Jeff Buckley, Jack Johnson and could mature into something universally needed but his stereotype will delimit unless by big wave we create a niche for him in popular music, change the world DC
raygabmiamizzi 2 years ago 3
@raygabmiamizzi
All I can say is, thank God for youtube and the internet!
labouroflust 1 year ago
music should be based on its expressive and not the social merit but music is a common social reflective so this will always nullify itself. It would have to be a social trend to accept beauty without classification or creed. Also, if I may put forward what I believe the best view, Barak is not Black or white, just a PERSON. I believe the latter to be the lesson. The internet has changed social evolution, but society has evolved to become mixed with technological advancement, see mores theory.
raygabmiamizzi 1 year ago
@raygabmiamizzi yes, time may be the main factor. The internet, which is the main argument here and not music, is showing that race and views of race has changed. Also you point toward not music, which is art, but ethic, or social ethics - the science of 'humanity' and music which is ' expression of the human condition'. Ethics, I believe you will find, is very poorly achieved and overshadowed by capitalism. David Choi may be able to make a mark here.
raygabmiamizzi 1 year ago
