Fell for the jet ski scam in Koh Samui. There was bump which caused some very minor damage. The owner of the jet ski said I would have to pay 90,000 baht. I said "hell no" and called the tourist police, who weren't that helpful. I still ended up paying 50,000 baht. Looking back, the tourist police were probably in on it. Sure they took a cut.
Hard lesson learned but at least I was only hurt financially.
There are tons of SCAMS in Thailand. Even the police is in it. The WHOLE country is CORRUPTED!!! Everyone should stay away from Thailand for awhile until they get their system corrected. It's a beautiful place but majority of Thai people their are all about ripping people off to make money. Truly sad that those individual had made a bad image of their own country. Invest your money in a better country where the laws are fair to tourist and those who lives their. Obviously Thailand is no good.
I've heard of some people having occasional bad experiences in Thailand, but you and your brother got hit with an unprescedented shit storm. Sorry this happened. Thailand is one of my favorite places in the whole world, but there is indeed corruption about. For a falang, getting caught in the middle of something can cost you a pretty penny to get out of. Man, I went to DR and Mexico and a few other places last few years. And every time on the beach people try to LURE you in to those Jet Skis and other trips. All those people in different countries LOVE money they are hungry for it and will rip you off any chance they get. You really have to be careful of what you do and not lower your guard. This is definitely genuine. Google "jet ski scams Thailand" (read: "jet ski extortion racket with police collaboration"). It happens more frequently in Phuket than Pattaya, but has happened many times in other beach locales as well. As for the incident with the girl and the criminal behaviour of the police involved - also perfectly credible. The Royal Thai Police are among the most corrupt in the world and are never to be trusted. One night in Pattaya makes a hard man humble...

They just wanted a nice holiday in Thailand, and made the mistake of believing the travel guides that failed to warn them of the lawlessness of the country. I am off to Thailand in late April for a holiday. I have spent many hours trawling through online forums such as Stickman and others in order to be fully informed and prepared, so as to avoid any entanglements. Yup I live in Thailand. Moving out ASAP. It's not just jet skis, motor bikes too. My friend's rented bike got stolen by the owner of the rental shop! He demanded full price for the bike from my friend immediately after he was informed it was stolen, didn't even mention the police.

My personal advise: tell everyone you know not to go to that place. I wouldn't either, but have no choice (for individual reasons). People, please read about safety before u embark to Pattaya, Phuket and BKK before you travel. I been going for over 8 years, never had a problem. There are mafia everywhere, from the moment u step off the plane into your taxi to the local businesses. Be vigilant, if someone approaches you like your new best friend, avoid, never give out any personal information, DO NOT tell strangers what hotel your staying at. Make sure you have tourist police phone-numbers.

The hotel we were at was on right hand site of the street right next to B52 bar in Walking street.The reception was on left hand site with two personals on duty , about 30 safe boxes were right next to the reception, to the right there was one elevator and 2 sofas were in the middle for guests to chill out.

@BETO1BETO2 , yes it is stock photo. There were 3 hotels in the street next to B52. All of them were on right hand side ( entering from Walking street ). Between the first and second hotel ( which was the on we were staying in ) there was a shop or something. I remember some ladies sitting outside the shop waiting for customer to get their nails or something done and kept waving at every man who was walking in that street to get their attention for business.

Im realy sorry what happened to you guys. I been there several times, Patt & bkk, chiang Mai and chaing Mai and other than a few lite scams and annouances Ive always been safe. Before I stepped foot on Thai I spent alot of time learning about the scams and ecucating my self. Maybe you guys should consider a guided tour until you get use to a place. I wouldn't feel rt telling you to try it again with what you been thru but it realy is a place for a wonderful time.

I do not know if they could have done anything, but if you had an Embassy in Bangkok, might well have been worth a phone call. Not sure though how they would help, but perhaps they could get in touch with the Pattaya police and notify the authorities of the incident - passing on your experience in dealing with the police in Pattaya.
I'm still amazed the police demanded what they did from you.
@cloanes There might have been 'tourist police' on walking street but apparently they are not available for each incident, at least they were not there for us :(( or as you said, who knows if they would be any different or even could be of any help as long as they were thai.

I dont understand why your hotel never took the ladies ID card most hotels will not let a lady in who will not hand over there card . Getting robbed by a lady fuck me the only way they are normally capable is to drug there victims first ave never heard of anybody getting robbed at knife point by a lady in there hotel & ave stayed in pattaya a long time .
@boywelder1 , Actually they did ask the girl to hand over her ID but amazingly they gave her back her ID card after all she did. This is where I saw with my own eyes that they are all like a family in but different positions. One is hotel receptionist, one as jet ski renter, one super market man and even some as cops and so on.
@frostgothic What hotel did u stay? they will usually retain there cards until they leave and also photocopy them . I stay in pattaya for over a year and never had any problems . Usually in my oppion the police protect tourisits in general in the tourist areas but the shit over the jet ski is a no win situation .

What happened to you is sad, but it is partly your own fault, you should have learned something about Pattaya before you went, a little knowledge will save you a lot of pain, but you have to keep it in perspective that could have happened anywhere, some of my mates have had the same truble in other countrys, but dont let that put you off coming to Pattaya you will have a great holiday there, but go learn something about Thailand first, but dont ask somebody who has never spent any time there

you should gain more informations about the country you planing to visit, specialy if its that different from yours! you made very bad misstakes ...you can read all over the web to not take someone from the street to your room (at least on the first trip on the first day O_o)...you also would have know that renting a jetski is a big risk, specialy in pattaya ...i'm not sure this story is real, but sure it could be ...even if you have to be very starry-eyed if all that happens to you...on one day

We should have done some more research.around 11 O'clock arrival on Pattaya, 12 O'clock renting Jetskis, getting savaged until 4 O'clock, my brothers going for a girl at about 6 O'clock. He getting attacked at about 7 O'clock. Starting off the run-away back to airport az 8 O'clock. Getting there at about 9:30 O'clock. Sleeping in the airport and flying with the next day flight back home at about 19:00 O'clock. This was our 'fun' trip to Pattaya :(

Many hotels keep the girl's ID and note down details before letting them in. Some even take a photo or video clip of her. Some even go as far as ringing up the guy's hotel room, before handing the girl's ID back when she leaves the hotel in the morning. Many hotels also have a safe in which one can keep their passport or other valuables. Usually, when the girl is taking a shower, that's when you quickly put your money in there.
@shenzhenprostitute Absolutely correct. The hotel we were in had kept the girl's ID.Actually the made clear girls with no ID wont be let in. But what was fishy and tricky was that they did handle her ID back to her and let her leave without questioning her or something. They also had a safe at the reception but since we were just arrived and had that Jetski problem fresh in our minds, therefore we had not put our stuff in there.

Fell for the jet ski scam in Koh Samui. There was bump which caused some very minor damage. The owner of the jet ski said I would have to pay 90,000 baht. I said "hell no" and called the tourist police, who weren't that helpful. I still ended up paying 50,000 baht. Looking back, the tourist police were probably in on it. Sure they took a cut.
Hard lesson learned but at least I was only hurt financially.

There are tons of SCAMS in Thailand. Even the police is in it. The WHOLE country is CORRUPTED!!! Everyone should stay away from Thailand for awhile until they get their system corrected. I've heard of some people having occasional bad experiences in Thailand, but you and your brother got hit with an unprescedented shit storm. Sorry this happened. Thailand is one of my favorite places in the whole world, but there is indeed corruption about. For a falang, getting caught in the middle of something can cost you a pretty penny to get out of. Man, I went to DR and Mexico and a few other places last few years. And every time on the beach people try to LURE you in to those Jet Skis and other trips. All those people in different countries LOVE money they are hungry for it and will rip you off any chance they get. You really have to be careful of what you do and not lower your guard. It happens more frequently in Phuket than Pattaya, but has happened many times in other beach locales as well. As for the incident with the girl and the criminal behaviour of the police involved - also perfectly credible. I am off to Thailand in late April for a holiday. Yup I live in Thailand. Moving out ASAP. It's not just jet skis, motor bikes too. My friend's rented bike got stolen by the owner of the rental shop! He demanded full price for the bike from my friend immediately after he was informed it was stolen, didn't even mention the police.
This motorbike scam is #7 in the top 10 scams of Thailand according to Lonely Planet.

There was also one time at the apotechary i wanted to take a vaccin and they charged me for something they hadn't mentioned because i came there for the first time and there was a price for that, and that was like 1000baht

i just got done the jet ski fukin cunts screwed me over, wat they do is they cover the scratches done to jet ski and the cover falls off after the skie enters the water.

People, please read about safety before u embark to Pattaya, Phuket and BKK before you travel. I been going for over 8 years, never had a problem. There are mafia everywhere, from the moment u step off the plane into your taxi to the local businesses. Be vigilant, if someone approaches you like your new best friend, avoid, never give out any personal information, DO NOT tell strangers what hotel your staying at. Make sure you have tourist police phone-numbers.

The hotel we were at was on right hand site of the street right next to B52 bar in Walking street.The reception was on left hand site with two personals on duty , about 30 safe boxes were right next to the reception, to the right there was one elevator and 2 sofas were in the middle for guests to chill out.

Between the first and second hotel ( which was the on we were staying in ) there was a shop or something. Before I stepped foot on Thai I spent alot of time learning about the scams and ecucating my self. Maybe you guys should consider a guided tour until you get use to a place. Not sure though how they would help, but perhaps they could get in touch with the Pattaya police and notify the authorities of the incident - passing on your experience in dealing with the police in Pattaya.

This is where I saw with my own eyes that they are all like a family in but different positions. One is hotel receptionist, one as jet ski renter, one super market man and even some as cops and so on.

@frostgothic What hotel did u stay? they will usually retain there cards until they leave and also photocopy them . I stay in pattaya for over a year and never had any problems . Usually in my oppion the police protect tourisits in general in the tourist areas but the shit over the jet ski is a no win situation .

What happened to you is sad, but it is partly your own fault, you should have learned something about Pattaya before you went, a little knowledge will save you a lot of pain, but you have to keep it in perspective that could have happened anywhere, some of my mates have had the same truble in other countrys, but dont let that put you off coming to Pattaya you will have a great holiday there, but go learn something about Thailand first, but dont ask somebody who has never spent any time there

you should gain more informations about the country you planing to visit, specialy if its that different from yours! you made very bad misstakes ...you can read all over the web to not take someone from the street to your room (at least on the first trip on the first day O_o)...you also would have know that renting a jetski is a big risk, specialy in pattaya ...i'm not sure this story is real, but sure it could be ...even if you have to be very starry-eyed if all that happens to you...on one day

We should have done some more research.around 11 O'clock arrival on Pattaya, 12 O'clock renting Jetskis, getting savaged until 4 O'clock, my brothers going for a girl at about 6 O'clock. He getting attacked at about 7 O'clock. Starting off the run-away back to airport az 8 O'clock. Getting there at about 9:30 O'clock. Sleeping in the airport and flying with the next day flight back home at about 19:00 O'clock. This was our 'fun' trip to Pattaya :(

Many hotels keep the girl's ID and note down details before letting them in. Some even take a photo or video clip of her. Some even go as far as ringing up the guy's hotel room, before handing the girl's ID back when she leaves the hotel in the morning. Many hotels also have a safe in which one can keep their passport or other valuables. Usually, when the girl is taking a shower, that's when you quickly put your money in there.
