  • Wouldn't it be better to just add a reverb?

  • fvckn Sylvester Stallone

  • Great tutorial! my snares sound a lot better now!

Also I have a question, does someone at dubspot now how to create hardstyle?

I mean there are a lot of tutorials about it on youtube but its all just not professional and just doesn't sound like anything at all..

And I'm not that advanced yet to know how to program synths and drum machines to make the sound I have in my mind..

If not, its not a problem I also like to make dubstep..

    Thanks in advance

  • So i have downloaded the legacy 7 drum pack, i have installed it but i cant seem to find the sounds anywhere on my ableton, if anyone has had the same problem and you have managed to sort it then please let me know x

  • interesting use of vocoder man really intuitive. going to try this and modulate some clip settings. the possibilities. lo

  • @Dubspot: By the way, are there any sources online that you may know of that defines music production terms and definitions?

  • @Dubspot: What's happening? This will probably sound like a dumb question, but through your courses do you guys answer the why's of music production, or do I need to go to a sound engineering school? What I mean is this. "If I do things this way why does this happen , such as when you were adjusting parameters for the range in the vocoder. Know what I mean? I tried FullSail to no avail. Yep...found out that I was paying over 50G's for them to tell me the same things I saw on Wikipedia. Yikes!!!

  • Great video, but I can't hear the final snare well over your talking at the end.

  • dry snare from the beginning sounds way better than after all his processing at the end. I've seen multiple vids from this company and my conclusion is dubspot = no good

  • @joshisrad I fully agree with you. This has got to be the weakest snare ever created.

  • @joshisrad Then you make a tutorial, sprout. DubSpot is good, and the guy that made this tutorial is great. He's not showing you this so you can copy his exact snares. He goes in depth and shows what each of the settings does so that we can fine tune, and such and get a good snare sound that WE like. Damn, you kids are thick.

  • @TehJizzCakes That you demean the age you perceive of me twice in your post betrays your own insecurity with your teenage immaturity and lack of experience and know-how. "Then why don't YOU do it" is one of the most trite rebuttals used in a debate and is fairly commonly heard from young bucks. I'm not going to give you my sound design tips. You can keep using shit tutorials. But don't get all butthurt over my contempt for Dubspot. You've never listened to a track with this snare in it.

  • this one, was a very good one :) after long time i learned something :)

  • you can do this whole video just by getting MICROTONIC software. it's the best for making drums that sound like this.

  • Hey DubSpot, I have a question, whenever I try making a melody I don't hear the sounds untill I play the song, is there anyway fix this?

    Thanks.

  • @SkrymMusic

Well if that's what I'm thinking about (I'm newbie myself so if I'm wrong - please don't call me noob or anythin)

Go to the session sector and turn on the switch that looks like a watch (but if you take a closer look, it's basically a note) in the bottom of the clip you need. It's called "arm session recording" Tell me if that helps and whether I was right with your problem or not)

  • Why is is whenever I put a sample into the drum rack it's always quieter than than before I put it in?

  • @Neutr4lNumb3r by default when you put a sample in the drum rack it's volume is set to -12db, same as with the simpler instrument.

  • Great tutorial... Ableton seems so much more versitile than Pro Tools... Considering a change of DAW :/

  • I really think ableton is incredibly awesome, with all its possibilities, but where is the time music like this was made with a real drum kit, without all those effects^^ sometimes I miss that

  • i'm not sure i like this sound :/

  • These Fuckin Tutorials are so Awesome Man, Dubstep Rocks.

  • Wow... sick tutorial... amazingly insightful, thx

  • awesome. this is how to make music on a computer. details are so important

  • that makes a very nice stereo effect..

  • Damn.....you sure know what you're doing. Good tip mane!

  • this is genius!! if u don't mind i want to use this sound in my second dubstep song attempt.. wish me luck!!

  • Sweet dude! :D

  • Dope video man. Thanks.

  • you could just throw those fx on a send channel. instead of using 2 snares. that way you can add those fx to other elements while saving some cpu

  • fuck yeah works nice. +1 :)

  • I wasn't impressed with that snare. It didn't have the punch to it that dubstep snares should have. Snares in dubstep, imho, should really snap/crack. One of the best ways to achieve that is to layer snares and use transient shaping, EQ and some slight reverb effects. A bit of white noise works well to.

Personally your snare sounded very muddy.

  • Do you only put the effects on the one snare and leave the other the way it is? Because when I try to put an effect on just one snare it goes on both. And also at the end the gate is just muting my sound. Are these problems related?

  • @beastboy3535 I am in the same situation.. But my gate cuts of all of my sound because the volume of my snare simply isn't loud enough. But how do I fix it so I have a snare drum with effect and one without? :o

  • ur vocie is massive!

  • hey man, i don't have the vocoder effect even though i have ableton live 8. any ideas how i can find it??

  • @SnubCluster the vocoder is new in 8, make sure your copy of 8 is properly installed and up to date. It should be under Audio Effects > Vocoder at the bottom of the list.

  • great vid loving it

  • @pampalass thanks! Check out dubspot.com for more info about our school.

  • very helpful cheers!

  • @jackp1158 glad you found it helpful! Check out the dubstep production playlist on our channel for more tutorials.

  • i didn't know Sylvester Stallone did tutorials!

  • great tut, but your courses are way too expensive

  • @OnCall101Villa glad you enjoyed the tutorial, we also offer weekend workshops for people on a budget.

  • just use a reverb.. vocoders are for harmonic resonators.

  • When I add the gate the snare doesnt play :s.

  • @CthulhuDub you want to check the threshold setting on the gate and make sure that it's not preventing the snare from coming through. If the snare is not louder than the threshold it will be silent.

  • love your voice, very stallone. haha :)

  • Great stuff :)

  • adriaaaaannnnnnn!

  • What's the point in setting the release for the filter and reverb tail longer than the release on the gate?

  • @shaftahoy The idea is to make the reverb extra thick and potent, then cut it in length with the gate.

  • How hungry does having so many filters etc get on your comp?

  • @jwharehinga

Not too taxing on the CPU at all. Lives devices are pretty CPU efficient. You can always resample the snare and then throw it back in the drum rack. Hope that helps.

  • thnk!!!!!!!!!!

  • good tutorial, i dont use abelton live but you can apply the concepts just as well to an FL studio setup

  • tnx 4 this... can u make one tutorial with some sub kick and noise snare together in one shot hf :)

  • amazing tutorial!! :) it's cool to see how many effects can be implemented on one small sound clip to tune it exactly to suite your needs.

  • One question though, quite irrelevant to this video but I require the information nonetheless: If you download Live 8 will you still be able to use the old saves you have on Live 7 and will you have to download the entire thing again or is it just an update?

  • You shouldn't have problems going from 7 to 8. It was smooth for me.

  • i had ableton 8 and downloaded 7 and it wont let me use samples from one on the other.

  • Why would you downgrade?

  • just wondered if this is just with my ableton but its not alt its ctrl drag not alt, is this the same 4 everyone else :)

  • just the difference between Mac OS and Windows....

  • too cool

  • Hey there - do Dubspot have any plans on selling DVD's of the latest round of workshops ? I live in the UK and would never get the time or money to hop over to NYC.... I love all of these little tutorials and some of the techniques shown in the clips at the workshops and would jump at the chance of buying a DVD of one of the workshops

  • @MigoiMusic Stay Tuned for more free content. We have tons of footage we will be posting soon!

  • @MigoiMusic Dude, pay for the online curse. 100% worth it.

  • @theoriginalmafya I did and I am... in week 7 now.. love it!

  • @MigoiMusic making my own tutorial mix so i can have it on the television with a dvd remote for back and slow mo. i have avoided tutorials for quite awhile because they were just confusing me more but the first dubspot tutorial i saw i instantly learned a few fundamentals that i was some how not grasping. one day i hope i can thank these guys in a deserving manner, with sound that shakes the earth off its axis and is a build up for the coming of the horsemen and bass drop on apocolypse (soon)

  • this is creative. thanks.

  • nice
