SAD TRUTH: The ever-shrinking American consumer will be unable to pay $30K for the Volt when a Focus costs half of that price. I've done the math and it would take over 100,000 miles to pay for the difference. Sorry, another domestic failure. $20K would be pushing it.
People, you need to take a healthy pint of skepticism with a large dose of salt.
You chaps may be all encouraged by this video, but with the EV1 still fresh in my memory I for one will believe in this 'Volt' as a reality only when I see one being driven down the road.
I have to agree with diggingforgold... with the whole EV1 fiasco I had a hard time believing they were serious about this project. After watching this video and focusing on the nuances of this SVP talking about the project, I am convinced the Volt will go down in history as the project where GM finally took a step in the right direction for the planet... electric cars.
Who cares about the calculations, let the market decide if they want this car. (PS I predict it will sell out quickly and waiting lists will become commonplace for this particular vehicle).
Did most people REALLY think that two of the globes largest companies who have been building cars for over hundred years were just going to let Asia have it ALL!?!
Go Ford, go GM, and thank driving for smart car guys like Lutz.
Now if Ford just hires back Coletti, its all good...
Excellent! I was skeptical about GM taking this project seriously, but now we see Volt mules driving around and GMs plans on partially shutting down and retooling Hamtramck (for the purpose of Volt production), things are really looking up.
The thing that bothers some of us, though, is the fact that GM can use NiMH if they wanted, and the car would be very cheap and able to be produced today. But it seems GM wants to invest in future technology, which I now think may be a wiser move.
The Li-ion pack is 16kWh (8kWh usable from 30% to 80% SOC), and GM says it costs £5,000 which is under $10,000. So the price is coming down, assuming they aren't fibbing.
Be serious, you guys cant have it both ways. GM's effort is the most serious effort toward zero gas vehicle, and you think its a lie? What gives. We all know (including GM) that oil prices are not coming down. If you really want to use the name "liveoilfree", support this effort.
VERY HANDSOME MAN!!

Bob Lutz is a big fat LIAR. He makes false statements about EVs, about the EV1, and knows NOTHING about EVs and batteries.
Lutz continues to claim that GM "sold" the EV1!

I would GLADLY trade in my Mercedes E500 for one of these, as long as its NOT A LEASE ONLY OPTION.
Heck I hardly go 20 miles a day much less 40, this suits my needs PERFECTLY. Plus it can easily go over 40 if I need it too!! Fantastic!
Get home, plug it into my solar panel and let it charge up for free!!!!

GM has already ADMITTED that the VOLT won't be used in calculating its supposed struggles to meet its MPG "cafe" standards.
That means it won't be present in more than trace quantities.

There have always been waiting lists for Electric cars, something that Lutz still lies about.

GM chose a $18,000 Lithium 8 kWh battery, while NiMH would cost only $4000.
Obviously, GM is just looking to delay and obfuscate, hoping that gas prices come down.
