@EurynomusBH Music has always been good and will continue to be good. I hear a lot of my friends say the same thing and ring with a nostalgia for a time they couldn't possibly conceive-usually it's the 1960s. I myself have absolutely no trouble finding excellent contemporary music. Nostalgia is a dangerous thing and only justifies a kind of cultural stagnation that perhaps you feel exists now and promotes a hopelessness. Take a look at any decade in history-it will overflow with great art.
@petermacaluso1 Ja, it really just comes down to personal opinion really though.
And as I said to 96FreakyStyley only about 5% of the current stuff sounds good to me, don't get me wrong.. There are roughly 10 bands that I listen to that are actually "Current", but still their stuff doesn't match the old stuff I grew up to.
@EurynomusBH i am as big a classic rock fan as there is,but I disagree with you- commercial music hs always existed and it always sucked, but if you look you will find many good bands and while you cnnot duplicate the 60,or 70's with the gret writing, there are always great musicians and artists out there....just like in athletics, musicians hve broken boundaries and there are some great guitarists around today that are just as good if not better than guitarist past....minus the bear is 1
@Kanymud I agree 95% of what you are saying, i just dont get the part "One could become twice as good as Zappa", in what way are you referring to as better, and i am not being hostile , just feel like i walked into a conversation i missed part of.
@gedi23 Look - do you really think so? Frank did not take himself seriously. He was enslaved to the music business, away from his wife... He didn't even have enough time to think well enough. He was not the only human being on the planet.. I think.. Maybe once upon a time there was another guy.
@rlevanony1 I actually don't like him as a person. I wouldn't wanna be his friend. I know his like king and all that crap, but it's impossible for me.. for someone to be like that.
saw his last UK tour, though obviously tiring at times he gave his all and was superb, love the Zapp, don't get serious, he was a sparkle in the eye type, probably pulling your leg without you even realising it. Love him.
I'd never heard of FZ until my bloke got me to listen to him when I was in my 30's. OMG how i wish I'd listen to him before. Never got to see the great man but his music lives on. I've seen Dweezil, Ike Willis, Jimmy Carl Black and a tribute band called the Muffin Men and although its not the same as seeing him play at least his music is still being played and listened to by the people who loved him.
R.I.P Joey Psycho,it's cool to see you again!.Great to see you immortalized here when you as a killer fan & roadie for Zappa. We miss you my friend, and your never forgotten if it matters to you?...If there's a place where those gone go,i'll be listening..... @secondchapter i dunno...i like the different ways he would do live material. did you even get past the first really fast part b/c they even put the name of the album up halfway through the video. It's called "Overnite Sensation". I'm not trying to bust your balls...just sayin
@brainmucas DOH! I knew I was remembering the album title wrong! Nope, didn't get half way through - heard the beginning and stopped it. No worries, I'm a chick so I don't have balls ;-)
@secondchapter yeah, the beginning is a little too fast for me too BUT if you listen to the rest of it, he goes all over the place with it and it's very interesting. a female Zappa fan....awesome! :) i'm glad i didn't bust your non-existent balls too much
he wasn't pop. made his own music and sound. not many people have that option. he did what he felt and it was great. true musician, glad to know who he was .made my life better, in the meantime. thank you frank and the band. a true original.
How much of Zappa's work is simple like this and how much of it demonstrates the complexity I keep hearing he was capable of? Most of what I've found on YouTube has been east, rock-based pieces like this, Jones Crusher, Montana, etc., nothing compositionally advanced. Even BP and M&H's Vctn. don't have the Stravinsky-level complexity fans keep raving about (or even the complexity of, say, Karn Evil No. 9). So where is it? Any recommended works? Thanks. Fun tune here, either way, btw.
Even though Zappa loved Stravinsky it´s not a good idea to compare the musical approaches with each other. FZ took rock bands to a new level when he made them play written arrangements of previously unknown difficulty. I admit that complexity is not a good term here. To a great extent Zappas music follows a linear approach that is then broken up in live performances. Listen to the New York live album and the whole Roxy and Elsewhere album.
"FZ took rock bands to a new level when he made them play written arrangements of previously unknown difficulty."
What are these arrangements? I've never heard anything by Zappa that comes close to the complexity of the hardest pieces by Yes, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, or -- especially -- King Crimson, and they all worked in the fringe rock milieu. Seriously, I'm not trying to put him down, I'm really trying to find his ultra-complex work. I hear it's great.
If you enjoy "The Yellow Shark", along with his other main orcherstral/compositional works (Lumpy Gravy, LSO Vol & 2, Jazz From Hell) Than go for Civilization Phase III, in my opinion that is his masterpiece, and contains his most ultra-complex structures--It is very great my friend. ;)
@richcapo No offence, but obviously have heard very little Zappa.... He released 62 albums in his lifetime, and they are still putting posthumous albums. If pure "complexity" is what gets you off, check out his orchestral music.
@hhoh12 I've heard everything I've been recommended, which is a lot of his music, and then some, including his orchestral work, which, I've heard, is a very small percentage of his work, and I haven't found it to embody the complexity that many of his fans celebrate. Like his abilities on guitar, the complexity of his orchestral works seems extraordinarily exaggerated to me. He's not Stravinsky, he's not Bach, or Beethoven, no matter what his more romantic fans say, as far as I can tell.
@hhoh12 "I don't see how you can argue that the LSO playing Zappa is less "complex" than Yes.... " Then knock Yes off the table and leave the complex works of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Jethro Tull, Soft Machine, UK, King Crimson, etc., etc., etc. And Jazz From Hell was the first Zappa I ever listened to -- and that was twenty-plus years ago.
@richcapo I'm not sure if Zappa is pretentious enough for you... a lot of his music is deceptively simple, while is is actually complicated and well crafted. You mentioned Montana; while being one of Zappa's most accessible songs, I would argue that the studio version of Montana quite a song, with a cast of virtuosic musicians (especially Ruth Underwood on vibes/mar)
@hhoh12 "I'm not sure if Zappa is pretentious enough for you..." No need for immaturity and insults. I'm just trying to have a friendly discussion here. If you be kind and respectful, please don't speak to me.

There are actual geniuses out there you know...curing disease, discovering new technologies, or improving the human condition. I think it's got something to do with him being one of the Kings Of Cool.

first concert i ever saw was Zappa and the mothers back in 72 or 73 im not sure that was a long time ago but i do remember it was a hell of a time . What a freakin genius this man was, and bless him for his sense of humor.
Frank Zappa whyd you have to leave? RIP man, best musician ever. All the young fucker artists now days take themselves too seriously. And there music sucks, more importantly.
the best thing about zappa is, he had the talent to do anything and he just decided to have fun with his gifts rather than turn into a dick, hes a genius
frank zappa was the best gutair player to come out of Baltimore, MD (i think). his songs might not have made much sense but the were badass. R.I.P. Frank zappa
I make you jealous = I've met FZ in Bremen (Germany 1988), shook his hand, talked to him, showed him drums - thanks to Ed Mann, who played on Simmons electronic drums!
FZ invited me to be on stage during the concert, I sat quietly between Chad & Ed (still gives me goose bumps) - He was so nice and kind to me ! YAUSSE !!
I still have the back stage pass and wonderful memories.
R.I.P. .........still can't believe that he's gone...
@kurtisblow3000 zappa was my first concert back in 72 and i cherish that memory cause it was such an amazing show.......... what a freaking musical genius along with his sense of humor.

Frank Zappa whyd you have to leave? RIP man, best musician ever. All the young fucker artists now days take themselves too seriously. And there music sucks, more importantly.
Frank Zappa is a legend.

You have to imagine though how many times they have probably played this song im sure switching it up once and a while couldn't hurt?
WarwickBass717 2 years ago
Exactly. And Zappa was a genius and an inovator.
I've loved listening to his albums, then finding live versions of my favourites just to see what he does different.

great song, cool performance. i fo hate it though when bands play songs at like triple speed in concert... :-[

I like this faster version better than the one on the album.
Tim8tei 2 years ago
Yeah, I know what you mean. I prefer the way the last verse is done on the album version but the tempo and energy of this performance is awesome.

This has to be my absolute favorite live Zappa video.
I would give my left nut, and maybe even the right one, to have been at this show.

the best thing about zappa is, he had the talent to do anything and he just decided to have fun with his gifts rather than turn into a dick, hes a genius

JByer777 3 years ago
It is sped up! I don't like it when so many other vids are
avail-alble at the speed the artist intended.
kaptbeefa 2 years ago
Don't think so. It's the same speed as on the Baby Snakes movie.
19nywf39 2 years ago
Yes it is. Frank often played his songs a little bit different when playing live.
