I once went to the police station in San Pedro to report a mugging and they laughed. Costa Rica is generally a safe country for tourists, but petty theft is a major problem. A loud belt alarm is good to have. A car alarm which can be activated by a switch near the dash is also good to have, if you live there and have your own car. That alarm includes all the lights flashing. I retire to Costa Rica full time next year, I will have to study my safety methods for sure.
