@MrFurynet In pure talent, no he's not the best, but extremely high. No, fleas talent lies in knowing exactly what to do to a song and how the have the perfect mix of bass shreddage and keeping rhythmic, hes good at composing songs that people want to listen to.

@alexidrummer ok maybe Scheila E can play the timbales well but hell no she is not a good drummer.
The fact that she played with Mariah carey, Prince and stevie wonder does not make you an instant good drummer. She has no personality in her playing and she just likes to hit stuff.
@TheCdrums hey?! you know how sessions and touring work right? you get recommended or chosen for gigs because you have something special to offer! drummers who don't play musically do not get gigs with people like Prince END OF! tell me one drummer who is a high profile session or touring drummer that doesn't play musically and has tremendous talent? the very fact that she's played with those people is a testament to her musicality!
@alexidrummer What do you think about Travis Barker, Lars Ulrich and Joey Jordison. They tour all over the world and they don't have tremendous talent and don't play very musically(expect Lars Ulrich in his early days.
@TheCdrums All of them got famous in bands not as session players because they can play one style of music well. and actually travis barker does play musically and joey jordison is a beast on the kit! he is exceptional! true to say he couldn't play this most likely but he is musical. the session greats i.e. gadd, vinnie, jim keltner all got famous as being versatile and musical as did sheila E she didn't really just do one thing like travis barker and lars ulrich

The violinist is Karen Briggs. Check out a band called Vertu...that was a project featuring Briggs, Stanley Clarke(bass), Richie Kotzen (guitar), Rachel Z(keys) and Lenny White (drums).
Flea's bass sounds like a wet fart! He is using that square saw tooth, wah, a hint of reverb, and chorus. He is a damn good bassist, but Stanley is just all class!
@gunryobassist Yeah that's the other effect I forgot to mention. But again it is just a wet fart sound, and it is rather annoying. As a bass player myself of over 20 years I've learned that too much effect takes away from the bass. No more than three (and having the direct bass sound in the mix) makes it more definable and sounds the best. Oh and you can hear that Flea uses a lot of compression in this song.
@zangazoo2007 In my opinion his sound was great, it gave him funky edge that was easily discernable in the mix despite the multitude of musicians on stage. Stanley is amazing and obviously dosent need help holding down the lowend so i thought Flea's sound and lead line fills were appropriate. Music is about preference, opinion, expression etc so just coz uv played for 20 years and know what YOU like dosent mean thats the way it is for eveyone, Bootsy Collins loved that "just a wet fart sound"
@gunryobassist Never once said to you that everyone has to like what I like. I am speaking from my own experience and what sounds good to MY ears. So I mean your reaction I believe is quite over blown if you can honestly think that I meant that EVERYONE ON EARTH needs to like what I like. I gave my opinion on my take on Flea's sound, and I do not care for it. Again it was MY opinion, and I am not shoving it down anyone elses throat
@zangazoo2007 you actually are shoving it down other people's throat by saying its annoying and calling it a wet fart sound. If you weren't you would've just stated the fact that you don't like it instead of insulting it.
Sheila E. has mad chops, but sometimes throws musicality out the window when she solos. Copeland is very musical, but somewhat lacking in technique to play a truly mind-blowing solo.
Who was the third drummer? Kinda looked like Harvey Mason. Now that guy can play.
No offense to anyone out there,BUT>................Sheila E. should've KEPT her butt PLANTED in her SEAT and LET Flea and Stewart Take over when it came solo-time!! You could EASILY SEE that halfway through Sheila's (somewhat) performance,Stewart was just DYIN to take hold of the wheel while that groovy jazz beat was still goin on,But Sheila decided to keep it to herself and completely unwrap that festive beat and took off (WAY OFF) somewhere ELSE with it!?!?
Stewart's talent is rhythm, not soloing. Whereas, Sheila is a much better soloist. Stewart is a huge influence of mine, but seemed uncomfortable and (dare I say) out of place here. Don't underestimate Sheila E. She is an absolute monster of a musician.
Sheila was being reserved. Ive seen her in a variety of situations and genre's of music. Stewart was soloing during everything... and thats not better. Thats bogarting. Two different styles, but clearly, one needed to be heard more than the other. Seriously? Apples and oranges. She's got class.

@Hammerhead786 yep twice!! u people r high! A latino girl who can play like that is legendary! Stewart is great too but u cant take anything away from Sheila babe.
Flea is a role model and at the point where he's finally getting the respect he deserves. Clarke doesnt need to be evaluated, he's a bona-fide legend. Copeland created one of the most unique styles that rock and roll has ever seen. Sheila E is an icon who raised the bar for female percussionists. Yet, the four of them together only produce an average jam. Never underlook the importance of chemistry folks.
Indeed Sheila Escovedo's drumming is pretty awful. Percussionists are simply not fit for this kind of job. It's a bit like Alexa Acuna drumming on the Weather Report tour in the mid 70's. She's a master on the timbales though.
I never knew who that Sheila E. person was until now. And I hate her. All those bloody crashes just piss me off. I feel bad for stewart having to hold it all together.
@rira0007 WHAT!!! I don't think she was in time during that whole video. if it wasn't for Stewart that whole thing would have been a train wreck! He was the time keeper here, and I think he had his hands full
@gtrplr42 Easy there!! I’m a huge Copeland and Im not out to diss the guy but just because I admire his playing doesn’t mean I’m gonna blow smoke up his arse either on this performance. At 4 mins in Clarke motions to Stewart to take a solo, which he does (pretty average stuff, and ends up dropping a stick),then it’s Sheila’s turn to solo, which she does and KEEPS TIME! If you don’t believe me, just count along ; )
@rira0007 I understand she's taking a solo and can take some liberties with what she's doing.. But one thing she is not doing is keeping time. If you noticed EVERYONE had to stop playing at the beginning because she fell off the beat... And never mind the end of her extreme solo.... This is a group jam, not a one (wo)man show. Stewart's solo may have been understated, but at least the entire thing didn't fall apart for a minute while someone masturbated all over the audience.
everyone who doesn't understand why sheila is doing all the solos...it's because besides first of all being a percussionist , she is also a Musical Director. She has been doing this since the 80's when she was with prince. That's why she get's to do solos. I guess it would be something she get's in return for directing. A little bit of trivia.
Maybe not but I did make a living at it lol. She's an excellent player but technically Copeland is so far ahead of Sheila that maybe you just can't see it? It really wasn't that apparent in this video.
@jmb92555 Really? There's tons of groove and style, especially from her. Chick's got some serious chops... but she knows how to tastefully play. It's not all about technical talent and speed (both of which she definitely has).... and she is most certainly not behind Copeland in that aspect. A lot of great musicians don't care to show off like your Dave Lombardos and your Portnoys.
Good post other than missing the point. And contradicting yourself and what is clearly evident in the video. She is showing off for almost a 1/4 of the jam. Personally I'd rather everyone except the violinist had taken short solos. Sheila E just didn't know when to stop. Nobody except the violinist really shone. It was a jam and it went nowhere. That happens even to the best
@jmb92555 So you think what Copeland is doing is fantastic? He's also soloing basically the whole time as well (listen to the syncopation and different time signatures... lots of improvising going on from him as well) yet I see nobody complaining what he's doing is taking it nowhere. It's just a jam. It's not really supposed to go anywhere for us. As long as they're having fun, who cares? All the musicians there are probably pissing themselves to play with someone of Sheila's caliber.
@sk8man182 YOU GOTTA BE FUCKIN KIDDIN ME???!!??? I saw her and her brother Peter Micheal Escobedo at the Modern Drummer festival in '96 and they were nothing short of mind blowing!
Where do you retards get the audacity...Everyone on satge is happy to have her why cant you judgemental fags who more than most cant even hope to achieve genius and improv jazz funk like this even tell us everybody what you think. Just take it for what it is or look online to see when the next time the mother fuckers tour.... i dont know maybe go to the show i bet you wont have dick to say about anything that night except "HOLY SHIT MAN THAT WAS AMAZING!" it will probably be real humbling
It's not that Sheila.E is crap, it's Mr. Copeland making mincemeat out of her! I saw her play with Prince and she brought the house down... Stewart Copeland on the other hand is a fuckin genius! That's pretty hard to compete with...
WTF was she doing? she managed to fuck up the beat! god damn it please go back to where you belong... i.e. kitchen! make go make me a sammich you excuse for a drummer...
I like how right in the middle of a really badass jam with tons of amazing talented people this NOBODY of a drummer COMPLETELY throws the whole beat off and gets completely off tempo during a horrible pathetic "solo" attention whore women way to ruin an amazing jam...
@SMWhit3out: "NOBODY of a drummer.."?!?!! Are you on crack?!! I'm gonna cut this now because......yeah. Anyway, that's Sheila E.!! Of the Escovedo family of highly accomplishef percussionists. Do a little research before you spout off about things that you don't know about. Agreed, this isn't her most shining moment, but I'm sure if you do some research, you'll realize how...uninformed...your comment was.
i bet you a million bucks sheila has every aspect of drumming down better than you, i agree her improv isnt the shit, but shes been on more albums than you will ever record.
@Masterrese hey... i hope you didn't want to insult me too xD. like i said before i think sheila e is a good drummer and i do believe that she's much better than me. i watched lots of videos of her and i know that she can do some really nice stuff on the drums. it's just i didn't like her in this jam. i don't like some of the stuff that neil peart does and i still think that he's amazing... it's all opinions... i respect everyone that plays the drums except from those that can't handle criticism
Sheila E doesn't look happy here and I don't know what the situation setup is, but she's an absolutely awesome drummer. 3 drummers and 2 basses is a mess. Check some of the stuff on YouTube with her family band.
@diamonddust22 it's not about any time signature at all. it's because the whole jam starts to sound crappy when she starts her solo... if you can improve the overall sound by using a different time signature.. go ahead but if you can't just listen to the beatles and "let it be"
@c0d3x001 If you ever make it to a stage with that calibre of people, then maybe your words will actually have value. You are just another arm chair critic who can't stand anything but 4/4 time because you can't air guitar to it when you are getting drunk.
@diamonddust22 Now I'm gonna tell you something: I'm just trying to tell everybody that wants to know it what I think and you just defend yourself by insulting me... how old are you 12? You don't know who I am ... I dont drink... I suck at guitar and I play the drums... and I'm actually not bad in doing that...I myself really like playing things that have a time signature different than 4/4. Everything from Chick Corea to Tool. Now you just shut up! Nobody wants to hear your insulting "opinion"
@diamonddust22 I'm glad that I don't know you in real life... i would probably be in jail soon if i did... you are just so stupid(yes I am insulting you... seems like you can't have a conversation without it)... did you read my first comment ? i wrote sheila e is a good drummer... i just said that in this video she sucked and she does... or at least that's how i see it.. would you have been happier if i wrote that it was my opinion... don't you understand that about every statement is an opinion
@c0d3x001 Dont talk tough to me you bitch. Your comment was ignorant, shallow, short sighted, and incredibly ignorant. Thirdly, don't even imply that you are threatening me because in real life if anyone raised a hand to me it would be shattered, so you can keep your fucking violence to yourself you loud mouthed trouble maker. Go have another drink you drunken motherfucker.
To me in this team. Stewart rules!

I could hardly hear the timbales. I wish they had taken more time to carefully set up the microphone.

everyone who doesn't understand why sheila is doing all the solos...it's because besides first of all being a percussionist , she is also a Musical Director. She has been doing this since the 80's when she was with prince. That's why she get's to do solos. I guess it would be something she get's in return for directing. A little bit of trivia.
jaime5429 11 months ago
This is the "real" Flea. Some people I have met have the tendency to overlook him because he plays a lot of slap bass, but the man is quite fluent.

Everyone here that is dissing Sheila E... do you know anything about drums? Or music in general?
emphaticleech 11 months ago
@emphaticleech
Maybe not but I did make a living at it lol. She's an excellent player but technically Copeland is so far ahead of Sheila that maybe you just can't see it? It really wasn't that apparent in this video.
jmb92555 5 months ago
@jmb92555 Really? There's tons of groove and style, especially from her. Chick's got some serious chops... but she knows how to tastefully play. It's not all about technical talent and speed (both of which she definitely has).... and she is most certainly not behind Copeland in that aspect. A lot of great musicians don't care to show off like your Dave Lombardos and your Portnoys.
emphaticleech 5 months ago
@emphaticleech
That happens even to the best
jmb92555 5 months ago
@jmb92555 So you think what Copeland is doing is fantastic? He's also soloing basically the whole time as well (listen to the syncopation and different time signatures... lots of improvising going on from him as well) yet I see nobody complaining what he's doing is taking it nowhere. It's just a jam. It's not really supposed to go anywhere for us. As long as they're having fun, who cares? All the musicians there are probably pissing themselves to play with someone of Sheila's caliber.

It's not that Sheila.E is crap, it's Mr. Copeland making mincemeat out of her! I saw her play with Prince and she brought the house down... Stewart Copeland on the other hand is a fuckin genius! That's pretty hard to compete with...

I like how right in the middle of a really badass jam with tons of amazing talented people this NOBODY of a drummer COMPLETELY throws the whole beat off and gets completely off tempo during a horrible pathetic "solo" attention whore women way to ruin an amazing jam...
SMWhit3out 1 year ago 2
@SMWhit3out: "NOBODY of a drummer.."?!?!! Are you on crack?!! I'm gonna cut this now because......yeah. Anyway, that's Sheila E.!! Of the Escovedo family of highly accomplishef percussionists. Do a little research before you spout off about things that you don't know about. Agreed, this isn't her most shining moment, but I'm sure if you do some research, you'll realize how...uninformed...your comment was.
Grizzam721 1 year ago
i bet you a million bucks sheila has every aspect of drumming down better than you, i agree her improv isnt the shit, but shes been on more albums than you will ever record.
Masterrese 1 year ago
@Masterrese hey... i hope you didn't want to insult me too xD. like i said before i think sheila e is a good drummer and i do believe that she's much better than me. i watched lots of videos of her and i know that she can do some really nice stuff on the drums. it's just i didn't like her in this jam. i don't like some of the stuff that neil peart does and i still think that he's amazing... it's all opinions... i respect everyone that plays the drums except from those that can't handle criticism

If I had tits like hers I'd steal the show too!
The rest is soooooo boring
payuki 1 year ago
Sheila E doesn't look happy here and I don't know what the situation setup is, but she's an absolutely awesome drummer. 3 drummers and 2 basses is a mess. Check some of the stuff on YouTube with her family band.
This isn't a career highlight for any of them.
bayouhazard 1 year ago
sheila isn't bad.... but the video still would've better without her...every little thing copeland does is magic compared to sheila
c0d3x001 1 year ago 3
@c0d3x001 Why because Shiela chooses to do something that isn't 4/4 time? You fucking retards need to breakup out of your 4/4 time bullshit.
diamonddust22 1 year ago
@diamonddust22 it's not about any time signature at all. it's because the whole jam starts to sound crappy when she starts her solo... if you can improve the overall sound by using a different time signature.. go ahead but if you can't just listen to the beatles and "let it be"
c0d3x001 1 year ago 2
@c0d3x001 If you ever make it to a stage with that calibre of people, then maybe your words will actually have value. You are just another arm chair critic who can't stand anything but 4/4 time because you can't air guitar to it when you are getting drunk.
diamonddust22 1 year ago
@diamonddust22 Now I'm gonna tell you something: I'm just trying to tell everybody that wants to know it what I think and you just defend yourself by insulting me... how old are you 12? You don't know who I am ... I dont drink... I suck at guitar and I play the drums... and I'm actually not bad in doing that...I myself really like playing things that have a time signature different than 4/4. Everything from Chick Corea to Tool. Now you just shut up! Nobody wants to hear your insulting "opinion"
c0d3x001 1 year ago
@c0d3x001 The only insulting opinion here is yours because a girl named Shiela E took your lil jam in a whole different direction. Grow up ass face.
diamonddust22 1 year ago
@diamonddust22 I'm glad that I don't know you in real life... i would probably be in jail soon if i did... you are just so stupid(yes I am insulting you... seems like you can't have a conversation without it)... did you read my first comment ? i wrote sheila e is a good drummer... i just said that in this video she sucked and she does... or at least that's how i see it.. would you have been happier if i wrote that it was my opinion... don't you understand that about every statement is an opinion
c0d3x001 1 year ago
@c0d3x001 Dont talk tough to me you bitch. Your comment was ignorant, shallow, short sighted, and incredibly ignorant. Thirdly, don't even imply that you are threatening me because in real life if anyone raised a hand to me it would be shattered, so you can keep your fucking violence to yourself you loud mouthed trouble maker. Go have another drink you drunken motherfucker.
diamonddust22 1 year ago
@diamonddust22 seems like your in love with your little sheila e so you get so angry defending her... how cute xD..
