@aranhilfp01 That would be a good idea but it's just so expensive to build high speed rail, especially on a long haul route like the Canadian. Plus, trying to build a high speed rail over mountains? That'll put more engineering challenges.
@DannyandPatty Nearly the entire Shinkansen in Japan is built with tunnels through the Japanese Alps. It is expensive and of course The Canadian isn't suitable. Even The Corridor isn't being upgraded, which is the most ideal route for high speed rail. That is purely due to the political ideology of everlasting support for the automobile industry. It's ironic how Bombardier exports high speed rail technology yet transportation in Canada is one of the most backward among developed countries.
We did Toronto to Vancouver straight through last May, the real fun and sights begin in Jasper. My only complaint is why does it stop in Winnipeg for 4 hours but only stops in Jasper for 1 hour? Jasper was one of the only stops where everyone got off the train, because its beautiful there. I'd go through the Rockies again, not sure I'd do the whole thing again in one swoop though.
@howardkevinm They should work on the logistics of that, if such is the case. More people would ride it if they knew it was going to be stopped in Jasper for an afternoon. Just my opinion (and everyone elses in the Jasper train station while we were sitting around waiting to re-board) By that part of the trip you really need to get off and stretch your legs, go eat at a restaurant, call home etc. Winnipeg is too soon.
@MaliciousSRT Freight companies own the rails. the crown owns the train. they have to abid by what the freight companies want. its kinda of like in the 70s when the railroads paid Amtrak to take their trains over, then told Amtrak they had to pay to use their rails. its all bureaucratic red tape.
good thing the 36-hour ride through northern ontario only takes about 30 seconds in this vid. interminable in real life. but luxurious just the same. miss working that train.
My husband and I HAVE treated our selves and are taking the Canadian from Toronto to Japer for our 40th anniversary which is in July. Can not wait but it seems so far away,
It's a wonderful journey, one which I haven't taken since I was just little and back when the coaches were steam heated. I'd love to do it again, what a pity it's so dear.

Long overdue!!! Now if Via would just schedule The Canadian to travel through the Rockies during daylight hours.

Scenery was great, but trying to sleep on Economy, horrible. Please improve the Economy as part of the billion dollar upgrade!

Wow, amazing video! It really shows that getting to your destination on this train is an experience in itself.
