There is NOBODY like Sonny Landreth.I'm not saying he's the best,but he probably is.I've been a slide player for over 30+ years and he's the best I've ever heard.His style and technique make him with out a shadow of anybody's doubt,GENIUS.That is the only word I can put to this guy. Guitar players,how many players have you ever heard play a four finger picking style?

.I've been playing 48 years,and he's the first I've seen.Like Hendrix,Sonny Landreth is one of a kind.Sonny Who???????

@lioncub755 I've seen a few great slide players live, but I agree none of them moved me like Sonny. Almost as if his slide is made of magic.

Dave Hole is another guy that blows me away too.

The first time I heard this I thought - wow, this guy plays slide like Duane Allman, 15 secs later it reminds me of some Ry Cooder stuff, next he puts a hard delta edge on it and it reminds me Johnny Winter, he's like all of them rolled into one, what a talent.

Added to My Favorites. Well, what can you say? You have Eric saying Sonny is his idol and Sonny saying Eric is his idol. Do I need to say anything more? Just listen to this performance and you will be welcomed to blues/rock genre in one of the greatest fashions.

its a great performance from two wonderful but different guitarists, however i think claptons playing is deliberately understated because its someone elses slot in the concert, see "little queen of spades" later in the same concert, an awesome performance from clapton, in his own slot.

@Ivegotmymojoworkin This is Sonny's set, Sonny's band, Sonny's tune, and Clapton is sitting in because he obviously loves Sonny's playing. This has nothing to do with anyone kicking anyone's ass. Clapton pretty much plays rhythm here and takes some solo space when offered it by Sonny. They quite obviously have tremendous respect for each other. Sonny's a monster, but he'll never do what Clapton has done in his life for furthering the state of guitar playing, Crossroads Festival notwithstanding.

Gotta hand it to Clapton for hosting these festivals and introducing so many astounding players to a greater audience. There are many players of EC's reputation that would be far more protective of their turf. I think he shows great generosity and proves that above all else he treasures music and those that play it well.

@Realfi I guess you are right. Eric Clapton does have the reputation. As for blues followers, we are already familiar with these talents. Some of these talents can play Clapton under the table (or at least match him). EC has had a good PR rep over the years. He does NOT have the only good blues going on...as many seem to think. I am so glad he "shares" the stage.

He must use a bunch of tunings. Sonny has a guitar with servo-motors which can change tunings by flipping a switch or something like that. I don't think he does it in the middle of a song and I don't know which guitar it is.
