  • I always thought Alydar was the better horse. His achilles was that he never changed lead. I think you have a different rivalry if he had. However, Affirmed and Alydar were both great. Yes, in their 4 year old season, Affirmed was "superior". However, Alydar got nicked up in their last meeting at the 78 Travers with some sort of foot injury and was never the same after that.

  • Easy Goer must have had the same bad luck that his dad had. I could see why so many people were bewildered that Affirmed was able to get the best of him so many times.

On three separate occasions in his career, Alydar had won consecutive races impressively only to lose to Affirmed when he surely looked like the better horse.

If you look at his Derby preps, his Derby loss is kind of a shock, as his performance in the Travers. I know he ran well, but the way he was running, he should have won

  • My all time favorite horse. What races those would have been with Slew, Bid and Afffirmed such a shame he got injured

  • The Heart of Alydar!

  • God bless him!

ALYDAR ALWAYS ALL WAYS IN MY HEART!

  • What acceleration around the turn and down the stretch! Much the best here.

  • Thanks for uploading this. Alydar was the reason I fell in love with HR. It's nice to see him dominate.

  • same here jess4metoo - he completly changed my life!

  • Alydar was great..so was affirmed..we are lucky to have his bllod lines in our stock!

    thanks for sharing!

  • Affirmed had the best luck a horse can have ever, he was always running free on lead, it would have been interesting if he had run this race, J.O. will challenge him for the lead & Affirmed would fade after the half mile just like slew did to him, if only alydar had a modest pace in the T.C never mind the bad training he had....then u know what..

  • that's a lot of ifs there...alydar had his chances, he just couldn't get by. Affirmed was a great horse as was Alydar...I always wondered what alydar could have done if they could have gotten him to switch leads

  • Affirmed and Alydar came back as 4 year olds and Affirmed really solidified himself as the superior horse. Alydar was 2 for 6 at age 4, with only a grade 3 score. Affirmed won 6 grade 1 races in 79', carried 128, 130, and 132 lbs to victory in grade 1s, won in California and New York, and beat Spectacular Bid to close his career. Head to head: Affirmed 7 Alydar 3. Career grade 1 wins: Affirmed 14 Alydar 6. Affirmed MADE his luck with his tactical speed;that speed set him apart from Alydar.

  • It was Alydar who got me into horse racing in '78. I rooted for him thoughout the TC. I've never seen the whole race. It's nice to see Alydar in complete dominance. Thank you for sharing.

  • You're welcome. Alydar's one of my favourites.

    Thanks for viewing.

  • It sounds like they put Street Sense to sleep. I see many tributes, hope it isn't true. Can you tell me if they did.

  • That's news to me! Street Sense is alive and well; he's just been sent off to stud after his final race in the BC Classic.

  • By seeing the tributes it looked like the put him to sleep. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • Glad to help. Check out the NTRA website for the latest news on thoroughbred racing, along with replays, profiles and lots of other fine information.

  • Thanks for the tip. I am new to this and need all the help I can get.

  • You're welcome. I must be going for now.

    Have a good day.

  • very nice video, wtg Alydar

  • Notice that Alydar never changed is lead in the stretch. That was a recurring problem for him (see the Belmont) and probably cost him a few of the races with Affirmed.

  • Good point. Another viewer pointed that out to me previously, and I have to agree that had Alydar changed leads like he was supposed to, he'd likely have won more of the head-to-heads against Affirmed. Horses can be so quirky at times!

  • Java Gold won the Whitney at 3 in 1987.

  • What a beautiful item. Alydar was MAGNIFICENT. The last two three year olds to win the Whitney were Alydar and then his son Easy Goer. J.T. Lundy murdered Alydar and I invite him to sue me if he doesn't like reading this. J.T., G-d will make things square with you!

  • i love alydar! he's awesome!

  • I love Alydar =)

  • I've been looking for a replay of this race for a long time. Thanks

  • Happy to help. Thanks for stopping by.

  • WOW. what a move by one of the greats

  • Glad you enjoyed it.

  • Holy CoW! What a move on the turn!

  • Totally agree. "Like a shot!"

  • He ran by 'em like they were tied to a post.

    Impressive!

  • Yes, VERY impressive. "ALYDAAAR draws clear by seven lengths!"

Chic sure was terrific when he was animated.

    Thanks for stopping by.
