The bad thing about this hit was not the positioning, but more of the momentum that both players had built up. Had these players not been going so fast, the hit wouldn't have done as much damage to savard. I think the league has to reinstitute a few rules to slow the game down a bit. Maybe bring back the old 2-line pass rule. Because it doesn't really matter what rules you implement to punish, when the game moves this fast it is going to increase chance for injury.
Hunwick was just trying to cut off Savard, and Savard turned at the last possible moment. The hard-ass seamless glass plays a role too. Definitely not a cheapshot.
It just feels weird to watch the Cooke hit again after seeing this and seeing Hunwick by Savard the whole time in the Cooke incident.
I feel terrible for the class player Savard is to see his career possibly be permanently derailed due to concussions. Great playmaker and this is not what should be happening to players like him, Crosby, and Perron. Hope they all get better.
I have to say as a Red Wing fan, I tip my hat to you Bruin lovers. after reading through the comments, I see you guys call this a clean hit ( which it is) and place blame square on the shoulders of Cooke (where it should be). You guys are spot on. If this were a hit on a player of the 29 other teams, including my own, you'd have tards bitching about THIS hit. Thank you B's fans for not being douches and knowing what real hockey is.
If the Cooke hit is removed, this doesn't hurt him.......sad.
@Tuscanbullet ever team has its douche bags, but there are still poeple who know and respect the sport. and i have respect for you for acknowledging the awful events that happen to savard.
Thank Matt Cooke for this hit doing the damage it did. Savard should just hang them up and ensure that his quality of life is not further hindered by concussion issues. This was not a dirty hit, just an unfortunate result of a play that happens every game. It's just too bad that Cooke is just fine, while Savard sits in the press box and watches his team in the Cup finals. This is coming from someone who despises the Bruins. But Matt Cooke is even worse than them.
savard, keep ur head up, dont put yourself in vulnerable situations, wear a visor, put in a mouth guard. for christ sake. your a good player but maybe ur not meant to play hockey for a living. your career is done anyway
seriously hunwick makes me sick..how could he hit anywhere near savard's head when he has seen all pain and struggle savard has been through..so unnecessary
@slot962 umm i did i say that? because i don't think i did...i said he shouldn't hit near his head.. this is serious stuff that hit gave him another concussion ...its hockey obviously there are going to be hits.."shoulder against head against glass"...against a former teammate who has missed so much game time recovering from a concussion...obviously a little unnecessary buddy...
@crazychicka418 First of all, yeah you did say that second, you can tell the hit was in no way meant to injure Hunwick was finishing his check and third, you think on a play players have a chance to go 'oh that's #91 let me think back on all the injuries this player has had before i check him.' what a stupid thing to say.
@ConcertAddicted LOL concert...you think he didn't know who he was defending?!? How do you not know which player you should be defending..you're joking right?
@ConcertAddicted and no i did not say that..i said HEAD..not hit at all...Hunwick knows all of the bruins players...all of their lines...he knows whos out there...he knew who he was checking...
@crazychicka418 I like how you quoted the announcers "shoulder against head against glass" seeing as how they had no idea what was going on, clearly no head contact, Savard fell awkwardly after the hit and smashed his head off the boards not the glass, Savard himself said it wasn't a dirty hit. Also look in to what really happened here, less than a week before this Savard got levelled by Engelland and hit his head. Don't blame Hunwick for this accident at all, get your facts straight.
"I have a lot of feelings going on. I think I'm frustrated, mostly," he said. "It's tough to understand why this happened. It will take time and patience, those two things I don't feel like I have much of."
Savard was injured in the Bruins' Jan. 22 game against Colorado, when he was checked into the end boards' glass by former teammate Matt Hunwick.
thanks..but i do have my facts right.. he's out the rest of the season now because of it
@crazychicka418 "It wasn't Matt's fault, though. I was skating fast, for once, and he finished his check. He contacted me twice since then and expressed to me how terrible he felt, but it wasn't a bad hit at all." That's actually what Savard said in an interview with NHL.com. He goes on to say, "the hit against Pittsburgh (Engelland) might have added to it, though." So if Savard doesn't blame Hunwick, there was no penalty on the play and no action taken by the league I'd say it was a clean hit.
@crazychicka418 Let me be clear though, I'm not saying "I don't care that Savard got hurt" I'm saying don't blame a guy who threw a clean check, unfortunately sometimes accidents happen. You can't say "well people shouldn't be hitting Savard anywhere near his head" There was absolutely no contact made to the head of Savard on this check it was a 100% clean hockey check, Savard fell awkwardly, exarcerbated a pre-existing condition and now he is done for the season. It sucks but it happens.
@Osiryz Ok well thats good to know Hunwick apologized to him at least. I got the impression he didnt care. I feel really badly for him to be suffering again..the clip and some media are decieving it looked like his head to me but if it is solely from how he fell then that just sucks..it did seem like a bit of an unnecessarily hard check in my opinion :/ and to mja they did address it thats why they have rule 48 in place now. Unfortunately players are still going to get hurt :(
Not nearly as bad of a hit as the Cooke hit. He could have gone in a bit slower, but I dont see that Hunwick did anything wrong. The play is a fairly standard hit, and other than the lunge at the end, and the odd angle Savard is at, it shouldn't have been bad. I feel bad for Savard though. Guys like him and Laperriere shouldnt go down with concussions.
Just an odd position, not a cheap shot at all, Savard just seems to fall forward slightly and Hunwick catches all head, but it definately was not his intention...poor Savard, Cooke ruined a great career.
hmm def not a malicious hit, kind of feel bad for savard, a lot of bad luck, matt cooke shoud be ashamed of himself. No respect for players, shawn thornton is an enforcer and plays with grit but would never throw a blindside hit. Its just unethical. Savard is a complete different player since the incident. Sad to admit this, but walk away marc, take some time off
Ah, So sorry to see Marc get another concussion. This is taking down to many good players in the NHL. I don't think this was a cheep shot, it is very unfortunate and I hope he gets better. The NHL needs to get better designed helmets or their will be more concussions for Crosby too.
@mja2035 Getting better designed helmets wouldn't be a solution, Savard's head/face are fine, the helmet did its job. A concussion happens when the brain hits against the inside of the skull, due to an impact or whiplash effect. The helmet dulled the impact, but it didn't prevent his brain from moving around in his head. In my opinion the NHL needs to address hits to the head in order to limit concussions.

@robw90 I like your assessment on what the NHL needs to do in addressing the hits to the head. Hockey has become so fast and with larger players I just don't know how the concussions are going to stop. Maybe if Crosby gets one more and his career is over will the NHL board of governors do something. These concussions could damage the league with all these talented players going down. I hope you have a great day.
it almost looks like Hunwick doesn't realize that he nailed Savard like that, he only looks back/notices after the whistles... IMO, it's not a malicious/cheap shot, it looks like the initial point of contact is the back of Savard's shoulder, on a simple finish the check and chase the puck play. Shame to see injuries though. I wish there was a video of a close angle.
@mafiawillreunite Yeah but Hunwick isnt notorious for this kind of stuff, i was actually very shocked when i found out he did this, but i agree it was very disrespectful to his ex teammate
JUST CALL IT A CARREER ALREADY! IM A BS FAN AND I CANT STAND THIS "IS HE OK? IS HE GONNA FULLY GET BACK TO HIS GAME?" WELL HE ISNT NOW! ! HE NEEDS TO HIT THE ROAD SO WE CAN PICK A YOUNG GUY UP WHOS AS GOOD AS HIM!

What's kind of ironic is that Matt Hunwick was on the ice for Boston when Savard was hit by Matt Cooke.

I really like hockey, but to many concussions ruins everything, not only the career, but the whole life of a man
How many players we need to do something about it...
Even Sidney Crosby is off ice because of concussion and it was the best season ever for him... He's already a legend.
Memory problems, pain, stunning, and so on. I prefer my low budget with all my head, thank you.
