In my studio, students learn the bow hold very quickly using the Bow Hold Buddies[tm] bow accessory. The accessory keeps the hand relaxed and fingers in place while we learn more music.
You have to play with it a bit.. But the main thing is to make sure that your bow has enough resin on it. If you are getting a whispery sound, it needs more.
When the sound starts coming in better, you need to press down with the bow on the strings, not just glide it across.
Several things affect the sound. Bow crossing strings at the right zone, not too close to the bridge nor too far from it. Bow crossing strings at nearly a right angle. Pressure of the bow on the strings. Speed of the bow on the strings. Tension of the bow. Play around with all these factors
