I've already agreed that Ali is a better warrior and swordsman (he could take on hundreds of soldiers by himself), and he was also an intelligent man no doubt, but that does not make him a better general.

While Ali was struggling against other Arabs in civil wars, Khalid ibn al-Walid was fighting and defeating superior Roman and Persian armies. Even if Ali could have hypothetically done the same, the fact of the matter is that in reality, it was Khalid who did most of the conquering, not Ali.
