I miss The Cardigans and 90s music. I was young at that time. So much memories and people gone away. Sometimes I think only music can make us remember of the time gone forever and of the years behind us.
@Francesko263 There's great stuff out today. Even this is from their post 2000 record. ;) Don't let MTV's sellout trick you, music is still alive and well. Has always been stronger than MTV or any radio station. Great music will always find its way through, eventually.
@Francesko263 Depends on what you mean. You mean this year or post 90's. Choosing songs along this line: Humpty Dumpty by Aimee Mann ... All good things by Nelly Furtado .....Call it off by Tegan and Sara .... (un)Chosen One by Lia Ices.....Wordless May by Venus Hum ...... Eisley has a few songs: Trolleywood, Telescope Eyes, etc ....The key is to check out Pandora (dot com). It's the best way to find music with MTV selling out to fake reality tv. Opened my eyes, and ears.
@Francesko263 It's not you, it's the way music is programmed today. Check out Pandora, check out youtube channels, and online lists. I'm putting together a playlist here now with post 90's songs. I was surprised myself that good music was still being made. Online radio saved me. :)
80's and 90's still rule my heart, but post 90's music is actually great too. Just harder to find than before.
@TheOpiumDistrict Well, maybe you're right. Everything is possibile, but I don't see nothing new in today music. But not because music has come to an end. Honestly majors music corporations are to blame, that's for sure.
@Francesko263 Them and the corporate otlets that showcase music. They have united to undermine and or exploit whatever they can, while pushing only a few types of acts. There are a few standout acts, so hopefully they'll influence more than the sheep acts. Maybe veteran artists who still love music need to own more labels.
@unicorndeath this song is actually in reference to a famous poem that likens love to a violent and dangerous thing. It pushes us, it punches and abuses us - our hearts. Not our actual physical bodies. Like a terrible abusive relationship, it keeps us in its throws and keeps us coming back for more. It's the pain that keeps us alive.
This really opened my eyes. I can't hit a women, but I have made my girlfriend feel exactly like in this song, with only words and tone of voice. I am so glad we could work it out. This song really changed me... It really can mean so many things...
i think they meant to give the lyrics these two sides so it could be interpret both literally and metaphorical. i think thats the beauty (don't get me wrong now - there's nothing beautiful with a violient relationship) of the lyrics and makes it so powerful and interesting
I don't take it as being about a violent relationship- that is too literal!! I think she is talking about the way love hits you: she said "you hit me really hard, you hit me right in the heart". She is saying love is a powerful force, that it's like war. I have felt black & blue in love but no one has ever hit me.
The song could be interpreted as being about sex in many ways. although i think it makes more sense as being in a violent relationship...just an idea though.
So I don't mean this in a mean way, but the second line of the song "they wouldn't quite blow me like you" ....well, is this supposed to be a dirty reference? I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here since I like this song a lot, but maybe they could have meant it as in "blow me away" rather than something else, as in a dirty reference. This is a legit question, I swear. It was just a thought that popped into my head.
While it's a possibility, given the rest of the lyrics (you hit me, black and blue, haunt me with your violence, etc) it seems like it's just another way of pointing out that it's an abusive, co-dependant relationship she's singing about.
Whoa.....I never thought of the hitting/blood/sore/halo/sport references as litleral ones; I just always thought they were metaphorical. This song totally makes sense now. Thanks!
No, I'm pretty sure that was to stay consistant with the "beating of the heart" theme. How there are references to abuse in this song, "yeah, you hit me really hard", "punched me right in the heart", "signed with a halo around my eye". "Blow" I think, was like, "a blow to the face". A blow as in a "punch", a hard force. Plus, she's a girl. Can girl's get "blown"? No, just eaten out. :/
I have heard Nina talk about this song and how in abusive relationships the women still stay out of love and can sometimes even interpret the violence that is directed towards them as an act of love. But yes, it can be interpreted metaphorically as well..

hi I really love this song it's beautiful, with good lyrics - wondering, does anyone know what the song is about? I'm debating abuse in a relationship, or a really deep metaphor for the strength of love. Again, great song. Love when the tempo changes to "blue blue black and blue" :)
Oh, and there I was wondering if I am the only person who thinks about it :D.
I mean, it looks quite simple, just a story about abuse in a relationship told with poetic words... but I cannot help thinking there's something more, something hidden in the lyrics.
This song has two parts. This one, part one, is about falling helplessly and deeply in love with some one. In part two it tells of how her heart was broken by what seems to have been an abusive relationship. Both parts use the same tune only the lyrics are different. With both parts in succession it tells of a tragic love story.

@78910pj , I could be wrong but - I never thought that in this song someone has actually physicall hit someone; I viewed it as metaphor, as this album contains plenty of metaphor and allegory. eg, "Love is a sport" (this song), "Go to bed, world", "You're the storm". Then again, her mention of blood might reiterate the physicality. Who knows.
@ofmassappeal but u do know there's a second part to this song ..."And then you kissed me II" that does tell the story of physical abuse ... so i think ... (just my opinion) this is the first phase of an abusive relationship where everything is exciting and new and u know ...honey moon phase ... and the second part is after the "magic" fades ... sorry if my english isnt that good ...

oh man, i don't know why but their songs really do hit me all the time and more than one just makes me feel like crying without a reason. it's like i hear the words and even though i don't stop to think of them a part of me understands exactly what they say and the words just reach my heart. oh why is it so? real beautiful songs only make me blue, so blue.
"And, it hit me like never before that love is a powerful force...
And it hit me that love is a game....like in WAR....no one can be blamed...
Yes it struck me that love was a sport...so I pushed you a little bit more...
Man that says so much right there...on so many levels. I wish our Parents had told us this...had known this was so....that this was what we would all face when we ventured out to make our lives.

@lvu88 "This song really changed me"
Good for you, for both your sakes.
That's not an easy thing to do -- esp if you had parents w/ an abusive relationship; it's almost hard-wired.
But as hard as it is to change behaviors, it's at least possible.
Character is even harder to change.
Everyone undertaking a struggle like that deserves all the support, encouragement & appreciation they can get.
I wish you, and everyone else working on such issues, all success.

oh man, i don't know why but their songs really do hit me all the time and more than one just makes me feel like crying without a reason. it's like i hear the words and even though i don't stop to think of them a part of me understands exactly what they say and the words just reach my heart. oh why is it so? real beautiful songs only make me blue, so blue.

Deep....deep, stuff. 5-stars.
