  • Christian had so much style..

  • wish this included the next rider...looked like Phillips

  • Is that Tony when he was with Bones Brigade or Powell

  • @onelove1158 Bones Bergade was powell

  • Meh, the Hosoi hammerheads weighed a frigging ton. Hawks were too narrow. The Mike McGill where the skull had that ancient-greek style helmet on were the best. And for those who forget how good Hosoi was, watch this movie and remind yourself: "Rising Son: The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi." He was just too flamboyant for his own good, that's all.

  • 1985, Human League, Addicts, skating- coolest vid ever

  • Wild music!

  • I rode a black hammerhead back in the day, loved that board.

  • @lupowins alva skateboard were sick,i loved my old decks like that.

  • what kind of board was he using

  • @didd23 Tony Hawk -Powell Peralta Hawk Skull Christian Hosoi- Hosoi Skates Hammerhead

  • Fine run by Tony Hawk

  • the air @ 2:53 ( awk) you don't see many people doing this air..I have this air up on my wall.. the kid was just what he is today...for that reason...

  • Ahh, so who won?

  • whoa skateboarding and Human League, two things i never thought i would see together

  • @StraightPunkEdge93

Then i suppose hearing funk played at a contest would give you a heart attack! LOL...

  • sweet song

  • you can tell the second guy is tony

  • I think the bickering about which skater was better really brings the LULZ. They were both epic skaters Trend setters. THEY get posted on YouTube while YOU just watch YouTube. See the difference? LOL

  • is that the only song they had on tape dat day lol

  • I Wonder If There Was Glue Under His Chucks....

  • i can switch flip that

  • Classic... The golden era of skateboarding...

  • tony was soooo skinny back then...lol

  • klassic shit bra!Hosoi is still the man.Lol!That was the Human League playin in the beginning Dont You Want Me!

  • Great contest i rember it well, im behind the THRASHER banner RIP Del Mar & Frank Hawk, Tony Hawk's local park.

  • he wears converse ;D

  • everything about 80's skateboarding was awesome...

  • no i dont want you n im not youre baby!

(only make sense if played with sound

  • Sweet video! Classic Hawk vs Hosoi...

  • Jesus they were blazing that shit up. Twisted.

  • we did they get rid of the pool?

  • song?

  • Hawk looked so skinny and awkward...Hosoi looked GREAT!!!

He had so much more style.

  • Ripping to The Human League. Fucking love it!

  • who fell?

  • does he have a girl board

  • you can never say who's better between the two.....each skater brings their own element to the sport, but these two had more to offer than anyone at the time.....good fins and thanks for uploading this!

  • i was 12 and scared to drop in.., rad vid, they make that kinked pool look so smooth.

  • I wonder why skateboarding isn't like this video anymore?

  • This song make me feel rickrolled

  • @Sasukingu hahaha hilarious!

  • hosoi gots styles for miiillleeesss

  • Don't you want me baaaby

  • 2:09 ... unbelievable!!!

  • tony hawk is so much better though

  • rad man

  • Human League!!! That's some gnarley rad shit.

  • the trick at 41 is a varial. backside varial to be exact.

  • hosoi in my opinion the best skater ever!

  • hosoi rules!

  • Would like to see Hawk enter in the masters division one of these years at the protec pool party.

  • What's the move call in 0 : 41 Thank you

  • hand plant

  • This pool was kinda kinked and it didnt feel like it had any vert. Its only saving grace was that it had alot-o-flat. It was easy to go back and forth and do tricks on. Del Mar was a goody goody park and always packed-everyone had tons of plastic on their boards. The locals ripped it up though.

  • I sk8ed in chuck taylors in the eighties and they sucked big time, everyone switched to vans slip-ons and airwalks.

  • That was fucking awesome.

  • nice dude i have on sk8ed cons they arent to bad

  • This wasn't included in the original contest video released from Vision. Nice to see.

  • You know your good when you can shred like that in a pair of chucks

  • CRISTIAN ROCKS

  • It is Human League,Dont you want me baby,a great song of the eighties.

  • Don'y get me wrong, I like Holmes, but people who say that Hawk's style is boring to watch compared to Hosoi's are talking a bag of crap. Hawk is creative as hell. He must have some crazy stuff going on in his head.

  • @TheWorstWarlock Yeah. Based on that performance Tony Hawk f*k*ng better have won that!

  • @mixedstudios111 fuck ya he should have

  • Wow the fuccen hosio/hawk wars they truly r the best. but no one evr had style like hosoi

  • dont you want me baby ?? lol

can anybody tell me the songs that were played here please??

  • if its that important listen to the lyrics and type some of them in on google. that should get the song names for you

  • Hosoi gets mad air. tony gets nothing, like dumb grab moves

  • i disagree. did you see tony do that varial bs air?? he has to go straight into a varial invert to get his tail back around not to mention how hard it is to land on the board backwards on a 12 foot wall. hosoi was sick but tony killed it!!

  • i fully agree. but that wall is 8ft. 12ft walls are fuckin HUGE.

  • Del Mar's keyhole was 10' . It was kinked but it didn't feel like it had any vert. The tile was the vert.

  • I can remember the park like it was yesterday,That park was epic at the time.I was lucky enough to skate there before they were forced to close....good times..better skating

  • The keyhole was the shit

  • That keyhole was the shit but it had a really screwed up section in it.

  • if there was any skater i would have wanted to see back then it would be hasoi, and tony hawk wasnt even near as smooth as hasoi which is abvious in this video

  • True, Hosoi had awesome style but Tony Hawk invented so many tricks and was such a great person for the sport.

  • wow........ superb spelling!

  • music sucks

  • man i wish i could have been there to experience del mar and tony hawk's skating back then

  • Great vid!! 5/5 Grest skaters both. B-)

  • u got htis from the christian hosoi rising son movie

  • Nope. The other way around. They obtained the footage from Chantry Vision. This all authentic footage.

  • ohh... my bad

  • No worries. We just want to get the facts straight.

  • hey man, do you know what ever happened to del mar? did they turn it into something else or is it still there or what?

  • It was wrecked in the late 80's because of lawsuits just like all the other legendary skateparks. Theres a video on youtube of a bunch of skaters skating the combi pool in upland as the bulldozers are destroying it.

  • holy fuck.... that air at 1;27 must have been 7 feet ..on those heavy ass boards that fucking incredible . ...and it was graceful. nobody could pump the transition as smooth to freakin pop that high. i think this vid was on skateboard superstunts.

  • Ya this is freaking ancient footage.... I LOVE IT!! The skateboards were cool brings back the "Back to the Future" feel :) Ya Hosoi started with it, but Tony Hawk definetley had more style and bigger air, definetley better. He looks way young, around 15 16? i cant tell

  • Im not sure if im reading right but i think you just said someone had more style than Hosoi... For future references, dont post comments on things you have no idea what your talking about. Hosoi went way higher and Tony skated ugly as shit.

  • They just have different styles. If you asked me in 1985 who had the highest air record, I would guess Hosoi for sure. If you asked me who was more Technical I would say Hawk. Hawk had so many trophies that it is my guess that he stopped skating pro coz he was tired of seeing his fellow skaters bummed out and hating his ass when he showed up to a contest. They wanted to see someone new win. Hosoi will always be a great legend, but he could not bust out a 720 like Hawk could.

  • I think Chris Miller had the smoothest style in the air.. Airing from one side of the transition to the other. Not to split hairs.. just sayin'. I was fortunate enuf to see Hosoi, Miller and Roskopp all together in CT in 86 I think.. That was awesome.. still have some crappy photos around somewhere..

  • hosoi is the man, it's just to bad he never went to the 95 x games, becuase we would be playing hosoi's pro skater hahaha.

  • Hosoi, made skateboarding a lifestyle.....Hosoi is god

  • Both great, but damn, Christian is always all style... the boardslides are great but man that layback... a Hosoi layback is a thing of beauty...

  • great ride to muzik? i would have played jimmy thiebauld or some shit?

  • that layback at 2:08 is the shit!

  • FLOW

  • 2:08 STYLISH AS FUCK (meaning awsome)

  • totally. old school layback. bad ass indeed.

  • lol at the song. Don't you want me baby!!

  • I'm surprised Hosoi didn't win this with the shirt tied around his waist...you know, dressed like a "bad ass" and all. In all love though, Christian did a good job, but Hawk brought the heat.

  • Hosoi was dope, Hawk was next level...It's clear as day. Oh, and fuck Brazil. Haha.

  • 80´s...good times! Times of Christian Hosoi and Natas Kaupas, my 2 favourites American skaters in that time. Too, In that time, here in Brazil we had god skaters, like Rui Muleque, beto or die (my favourite brazilian shape-by lifestyle), fernandinho batman, Cupim, Mureta, Alexandre Ribeiro, Sérgio negrão, tron and others. Too, I remember that I had a shape of rob roskop (my favourite), trucks tracker (I dreamed of having a Gullwing) and santa cruz's wheels. (U.S. products were expensive)

  • North Americans, Brazilians and skateboarders of all part in the world. It's natural that the Americans elect an American, and of course, that a Brazilian say "Bob!". I remember the Rodney Mullen, in the 80s, as the king of the freestyle mode and Tony Hawk in vertical. But, to elect the best of all, I think we have to see who was the best overall (freestyle, street, vert ramp and mega). Mullen is the king on the ground and I think in vert, is Bob. Perhaps Tony Hawk is the best in general?...

  • 80's... In that time, here in Brazil, we only watching on tv, Hosoi and Hawk disputing the hegemony of the global skateboarding, and dreaming to see, in a day, a Brazilian skater in this place. The time has passed and the dream became a reality ... Bob Burnquist, Sandro Dias, among many others at the top of the world skating! What a pride! (we can not forget about the older Brazilians skaters that are part of this, too)

  • The Kings...

soccer = Pelé, basketball = Michael Jordan, tenis = Federer, surfboarding = kelly Slater, skateboarding = Tony Hawk or Bob Burnquist? (For me, is Bob. And for you? Who is the king?)

  • Hello. I'm from São Paulo-SP, Brazil (the South America's skateboarding capital) and in the 80's I saw the fight between Cristian Hosoi and Tony hawk for the world hegemony. In that time, sure, we only dreamed, but today, I'm very proud to know that Bob Burnquist is the 'Pelé' (the King) of the skateboarding, like the Brazilian skateboarding is on the top of the world. (Unhapping it still not happened with the Brazilian surfboarding). PS- Sorry 4 my bad english.

  • Hosoi (L)

  • skating aint fun anymore, all thanks to tony, i got to win, i got to win, that´s all there is........worng. kids dont buy it, skate 4 fun, skate rocks, fuck flypytiripity, i aint flipin shit, i aint faking shit, and i have also seen better days, dont get me wrong kids, NO COMPETITION, JUST KEEP IT WILD.........YHEEEAA, NICE TO SEE THIS OLD SCHOOL VIDS.

  • but also comps put skateboarding in the spotlight and it means kids that love it can push it and make sumthin of themselves, skateboardin can't be tamed and theres so much freedom in the sport no ones forced into comps... if people wanna compete then fair go

  • he was smooth. groovin dancing having fun

  • if you have read tony's bio this is was one of the hardest bowls to skate.

  • Nice video. It's so nice to watch Christian skate. I love the old school skateboards too.

  • Hosoi makes it look too easy! he added the style to the sport.

  • Hosoi is the greatest of all time. He was all style. Made everything look amazing. Dressed like a bad-ass. Definition of legend.

  • Hawk blasted every trick Christian did plus threw in variels way ahead of his time.

Christian is a great skater but Tony Hawk is the General.

Hosoi dressed like a bad ass?

    Are you kidding me??

Like this has anything to do with jack shit!

  • what is up with the music, hell no...

  • was veriflex ever a good brand? i think they are sorry k-mart pieces of shit.

  • who sings the first song?

  • Christian Hosoi is all style!!!!

  • this sholuld be called the nitty gritty cause thats what it was... nitty gritty man...hawi was so little wiry,...real good at compressing..hosoi..seemed so calm skatin like he'd been doin it forever..

  • great vid man!!!

i love watching those guys skating...

    it's so cool :D

  • hahah so dope. i like the music :D

  • Great clip and cool to see these guys ripping up Del Mar back in the day.

  • listen to the tunes, this is a bomb vid, thanks for putting it up

  • i was at MHR before a big contest there(my friend threw a dead cat into the crowd during the sticker toss). Hosoi showed up and owned that ramp, trust me, that was a hard ramp to skate; little flat, big coping lotsa vert.

  • I've noticed that while Christian is skating consistently with almost no bails, Tony Hawk's move have much more variety and in my opinion, are much more complex and interesting.

I may be wrong, as I cannot tell who's who but I think that Tony was first, and then last, with Christian performing in the middle.

  • Nope, Christian's the one who drops in after they say Christian Hosoi, and is wearing a Hosoi shirt... first in the video.

  • fuck yeah tony hawk skates to the Adicts!!!!!!

  • 2:09 best trick ever!!!

  • KeyHOLE! Crazy to see this, brought back memories. I had a pass there back then.

  • I don't care what people say about Tony man.

Alright, sure, the guy's probably the biggest

sellout to Skateboarding since, the X-games,

and Ryan Sheckler. But the fact of the matter is, Tony Hawk was ripping back in the day,

    and he still rips today.

  • and you sir are an idiot. Hawk survived the lean years of skateboarding and it was his name and skills that kept the sport going. His abilities were not the only thing that made him the best ever.

  • Hawk has earned the right to sellout as you call it. He's been a pioneer and spokesperson for the sport for over 25 years.

  • He was an asshole, but he also had a lifechanging experience later in life where he says he found christ.

I met Christian about a year ago for the frist

time Skating in Alabama, at a bowl jam, and he seemed like a completely changed man.

He's deffinately a nice guy now.

Idk what he was like in the past.

  • Yeah dude, he's paid the price. He lost his niche in skateboarding, lost his freedom, lost alot of his $ he made during this time, etc.

This should be a lesson to all of you piglets, God is God and karma is for real.

  • 1986 Albuquerque, NM JJ Surf and Skate Shop. Hosoi was doing a demo and we asked him for an autograph. He told us that he was the best skater on the planet and didnt sign autographs for little kids. Glad he went to jail. What a dick.

  • When i was a kid i saw Christian Hosoi skating at Charlie King's halfpipe in Burbank California. Right up the street from my house. I was standing in the alley watching him getting giant air. When he came off the ramp, i said" Christian Hosoi, can i get you to sign my deck?" He told me to "Fuck off!!" I was only 7 or 8 at the time.

    Fuck Christian Hosoi! Fucking jerk!

  • I don't believe it at all... this seems like one of those stories that gets told so many times it later seems real... Christian always knew that KIDS bought his boards and made him money, so even if his intentions weren't pure, he was always down to sign autographs.

  • yeahhhhhhhhh stylishhhh hosoiiiiiii!!!!

  • Cool, who shot the footage and how can i get a copy. i'm on the right taking photos there

  • i lyk dat song and all dis old footage. it sux how skatin th3z3 dayz is for "homies"

  • In 1985 I think style was more favorable

  • I though it was even! with hawk an edge on variety of "trick" but hosoi's style and line were equally desired! I think its cool to see some color! now you must were black and tats! lame!

  • It was a classic rivalry, even if it was played up by by the mags. They both represent two fucking insane disciplines of skating. Remember though, no one ollied into airs before Hawk, quite a few shredded w/ style and good lines before Hosoi... They both rule, though.

  • i think christian shredded too. The layback frontside grind to finish the run is the killer. Tony hawk can't layback with style or air without ollieng. It's 2 different artists showing their masterpiece. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • i agreed!!!! hosoi is he most stylish sk8r of the world!!

  • Tony Hawk on fire! Brilliant footage. Same style as he's got now. Love the frontside and backside ollies, along with the backside varial into a hand-plant varial.

  • I love Christian and everything, but Tony Hawk completely dominates this contest on every level. Even his backside airs are better than Christian's in this video.
