Okay, from Sonic Adventure to Sonic Unleashed, Eggman was pretty much sidelined as the main baddie of the Sonic series. That is until, Sonic Colors, where Eggman was actually a viable threat. This became even more proven in Sonic Generations, where Eggman grabs ahold of yet another malicious force, but this time, actually maintaining control over it, instead of being sidelined as usual. Recent years have made Eggman a better villain than he was earlier from the Adventure games onward.

Make him all realistic and serious and he becomes too cliché, not to mention out-of-character..

Ironically, Sonic and Knuckles have become too goofy and laughable (which at first I thought was accidental but I'm starting to wonder, they've been like it pretty much since Sonic heroes) which I also find unfitting.

meh, I actually like it when Robotnik (I refuse to refer to him as Eggman.) is portrayed more seriously. I mean he's Sonic's arch nemesis for Pete's sakes. Of course the fact that I grew up watching Sonic SATAM may have had something to do with that. I mean, in that show the guy reeked of evil overlord, and he still looked kinda silly back then. As for the song, I can defiantly see him writing this about sonic XD

The point is He's meant to be goofy and laughable /and/ believable as a challenging enemy, it's not a case of one or the other, I can see how it could be hard to get it right, but it seems like they just take the easy way out and opt for one or the other.

There are simular cases with other characters, but that's for another day.

But I've heard good things about his portrayal in Sonic Unleashed.

Well firstly his name was always Eggman in Japan, its Sega of america who decided to call him Robotnik for some reason. And you know SATAM has nothing to do with the games, same with the comics, they were never cannon. Eggman in the game was always presented as an anti-villain, hes not really nasty or anything. That doesnt mean hes not a threat, in fact, the main reason he has not conquered the world in the gamesw is because he woudnt kill innocent people to achieve his goals.

Ah, but even Yuji Naka himself said Robotnik was his real name, and as stated in the comics the SEGA games and the X series are in alternate realities. Many of these different Sonics go through the same adventures but in a different atmosphere.

As soon as Sonic Adventures came out, Sega of Japan and Sega of America compromised, now his real name is Robotnik while his universal alias is Eggman (but he still call himself Eggman most of the time). And look, technically anyone can write a Sonic Fanfic and say it happens in alternate realities. I'm not saying SataM and the comics arent good, I'm just saying that Eggman was never that evil or serious in the games. He was always an childish genius who just really wanted to conquer the world.

Well, I must say the only evidence that even the game universe Eggman is totally evil is that in Sonic Adventure, he would've nuked an entire city if it wasn't for Tails and blown up the United Federation ( via Space Colony Ark) If it wasn't for his gramp's Doomsday device. Dr. Robotnik usually likes to strategize a more sneeky plan to rule the world. Unlike Black Doom who just invades. An all the uber military force Eggman has is either destoyed or turned agaist him.
