Only the good Die Young. I had intentions of recording my next project in his studio. I am crushed by his passing and crushed that I missed any opportunity to work with such a creative talent.
Jay Bennett was a phenomenal talent. Two documentary films, "Man in the Sand" and "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco" show his stellar songwriting, arranging; and virtuoso guitar and piano skills. The films also show the social dynamics that lead to his leaving the band.
@wxmeister I love Jay and his time in Wilco, but like Jeff said in the movie. Jay wore out his welcome. In Jeffs book I quote Jay always seemed to be at his best when I was at my worst. It is and always will be Jeff, I miss him and all the great idas he put in Wilco, being there is a masterpiece
Comment continued The films also show the social dynamics that lead to his leaving the band. One wonderful scene from "Man in the Sand" shows Jay Bennett and Jeff Tweedy collaborating on the music and arrangement to lyrics written in the '50s by the late Woody Guthrie. The song is "California Stars" - a fantastic song even without considering its amazing pedigree.
A truly great musician has gone to join the great gig in the sky.
