Covering a story beyond the point where marginal cost exceeds the return leads to a decrease in profits. In a highly competitive market where the profit margins are slim, the market tells the news guys to go for the sexy story. That's the free market doing its thing. This is more likely the case than some media conspiracy.

They live in what is on average the most comfortable large country in the world, yet all they do is bitch about paying taxes.
