People, you are missing it all. Business use only software for which they can get support. Yeah, monkeys with a mouse should use Windows and don't even try Linux.
@iyivanov Lol.. "Ryhthmbox"... I don't even need to do anything.. you just OWNED yourself.. Rythmbox / Gimp will never beat photoshop / itunes.. keep dreaming linux fanboy, you OS isn't as productive as a desktop OS, only as a server os. Corporations reject free copies of linux for a reason.
@Iamthelaw1526 What you're telling me is just examples of exceptions to the rule.. Sure there's that needle in a haystack government / business that uses linux, but most companies/ people don't use it, and reject it even though it's free, of course hardware manufacturers know linux exists, they also know it's not as good as windows. Linux has horrible bluetooth, modem, sound card support. The process of installing video drivers is horrible, scanning sucks, gnome can't index, etc..
@Iamthelaw1526 CS5 = Garbage status in linux, you're wrong. "Alternative office suites" do not compare to Microsoft office. Gimp doesn't even come close to photoshop. Open Source is great, but don't detach yourself from reality, there's a reason major corporation reject a free operating system and free open source alternatives, they're not as productive. If they were, guess what? No one would buy windows. You must understand free market economics to understand this.
@zeitgeist2012 Actually free cost of Linux is irrelevant, if it doesn't have Peachtree, Quickbooks, Good telephony, Adobe CS5 Suite, Working flash, it's an unproductive desktop operating system which will cost me much more in lost money than pretending Linux does everything, it doesn't.
Windows---> if you want(corporate industry w/e) games. Ubuntu 10.10 ----> for everything else(including linux games)! Mostly everything in ubuntu is free and u dont need antivirus (unless u fear contaminating windows). The only weak spot for ubuntu is WINDOWS games. Alot will play just fine in wine but some blow ass in wine. So keep WIN7 or XP install for PC GAMES U buy. =X
Ubuntu 10.04 is FAR BETTER then Windows 7 junk. Buddy it works GREAT FOR ME and I do not have to pay for it. Why would anyone want to waste money for CRAP like Windows. Shit man run wine photoshop would work on wine. Let me guess you also like to pay for antivirus and firewall programs and updates to Windows.
@zikalify Ubuntu's sync is really Mickey-mouse, when you sync in rythmbox, certain songs will actually skip on the phone and not play, also it doesn't sync contacts, ibooks, some other stuff.
linux crossover or wine can help, also for drivers check the settings. many of the programs are designed for windows because linux doesnt have that many users (like itunes photoshop and magicjack, although magicjack said for about a year theyd support it)
@GerardH1997 Yeah, I'm using wine occasionally for games, but now the same games that used to work say they need Direct X 8.1.. oh well, games are unproductive anyways
@zikalify yhea i have a duel boot and im having some issues booting in to ubuntu 10.04 i did the upgrade had nothing booting up for a sec then i was able to log on to both but the linux ctrl+f1-f6 teminal would just give me an all black screen with some colored lines at the top and now this happens when i boot and it just hangs there i believe it probably a corrupted video card driver
photoshop, itunes or what ever can be used through WINE at linux my friend. u don't need linux to use any windows programs. windows does work as u said and the job they did in windows7 is very good but for an OS u pay for? it really is HEAVY and SLOW comparing to linux! i mean i have a 2,3 amd64 3500+ cpu and 2Gb ram and i need 10 minutes when i boot windows to see that the cpu is not occupied on loading the OS. Is that a shame or not? Linux when boots u put ur password and just work! agree?
Windows 7 hands down. More powerful OS which is a lot easier to use and have a lot more configuration for everything. I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 only for almost a month now. It really sucks. I will switch back to Windows 7 when I get my new hard drive.
@videogamegod88 You are just using Ubuntu Shit because you dont have the money to use a real OS, and your PC is really old. Windows 7 is a lot more user friendly, more stable, more anything you can say about.
Ubuntu is for poor people, and freaking nerds. Anyway It just Sucks....
@abrahamsoto01 i bought a copy of windows 7 and after awhile just wiped it off my computer. i prefer ubuntu to windows. i don't need to worry about viruses and spyware and my computer just works. no need to search the internet for drivers post install all the drivers i need are included in kernel. all software i need is included in package manager. all i need to do to install software is put a checkmark next to software i want to install and click install. that's what i call user friendly
@videogamegod88 I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 for almost a month and I can tell you that linux works well, it is stable but you get the feeling that you are running on an ancient OS even whith Compiz manualy configured. It is not the look of the OS,it looks ok, but when you try to make complex but easy things like Dual monitors extended setups and try to do other things like using The normal Firefox updates and Plug ins you find that it is not so easy.
@abrahamsoto01 my experience has been quite the opposite. i've never had any problems with firefox updates or plugins. sorry i was so rude to you calling you an idiot. but i've tried both and in the end decided to go with ubuntu. i don't really do anything fancy with my computer that requires windows. the only program i use that isn't cross platform was office 2007 and it runs in wine.
that's probably not the os fault though, some hardware brands are just not compatible with linux. it must be a license issue, vendors who don't want to give architecture details on their products so linux community can't really build adequate drivers. it's not really the vendor's fault (they got to make money somehow) or linux's (well you can't support something you don't know how to) but that's like the only thing i complain about linux distros.
I have been using Windows since the old times I can tell you that only one time I have catch a virus. It was on XP almost 8 years ago. Vista and Windows 7 have became a lot better than XP on that matter. If you catch a virus it is your fault, because you have to manualy install it and there are new security programs.
The majority of virus are for windows because 90+% world pc runs windows
If a real hacker want your pc, no matter what OS(LINUX,OSX, Win)you got he will gain acces to the pc.
lol that's probably true for a portion of linux users, but it's more likely a majority of linux fan boys/girls obtained their PCs licensed with windows and decided to discard all closed source software including the OS. people who easily give up $500+ products because of a couple of weekly shutdowns are likely to be rich bastards. the other option would be to custom build your computer, but that's not cheap alternative either. so maybe you don't know what you're talking about?
try to look adobe web site in order to use photoshop on ubuntu. Don`t be a dumb ass fucking around about "no photoshop, no 3dsmax, no ..." There is also no "start menu", guess its a minus too?
@Sons3e Actually ubuntu does have a start menu, gimp sucks and I'm not using decade old CS2 photoshop, maybe mediocre decade old outdated stuff is good for your standards, not mine. I run photoshop cs5 in virtualbox on my Ubuntu machine because Ubuntu just isn't as good for graphics editing, hands down, incontestable fact.
@Tobiash87 LOL, yeah, if you're an amateur I suppose it gets the job done. No sane person would say it's better though, unless you're really poor and price is the main factor.
You're never going to make Linux any better than the piece of shit it already is.
'
Is someone has to use a third party program like Wine to run other software, it's a waste of time. Software should work out of box, if it doesn't than that OS is a piece of shit.
The average person is not gong to fuck around with Playonlinux which can't even run most programs properly. By the way iTunes running under on Wine. Yes I've used Playonlinux and it's a horrible alternative.
so an example would be itunes its not opensource that cannot make it compatible its Apple that do everything they can to lockout opensource and provide no support for it, so ideally we should bit the bullet and drop itunes for apples destructive business model.
theres a certain importance in supporting opensource, remeber opensource is up against it because ahrdware developers are all bought out and so they only support develop for windows and mac :/ if they provided support for opensource ubuntu would be far better.

Not that i'm in favor of windows but lets stick to the facts if you wan't to be able playing at least some games you need to send cedega like 50$ a year.
Linux isn't for free there's a lot of hidden cost ranging from educating one self about the system up to buying new hardware.A winblows copy sets you back around a 100 $ but you can use it like 10 years which makes roughly 10 bucks a year.
The thing is, windows 7 is good for the wide range of applications available for it, but ubuntu 10.04 is good for speed, stability, and performance, so I say dual boot them both by installing win 7 and using wubi to install ubuntu.
@otterpat still pretty much a joke. I see alot of people that claim they can install all kinds of mmo's and they run, but I can't even get something simple like FFXI running, so if I can't - the general public can't... so can't see a major victory, but I do think Ubuntu has done an awesome job brining linux up...
go buy hardware thet comes with linux and is tested with linux when you buy your next laptop. here in germany there are even online shops that sell linux preinstalled and i guess they exist all around the world :)
The main problem is that they're not the well known shops. you gotta search for 'em. Or maybe buy some from dell. they have linux on their laptops i guess. at least on the netbooks. so make their ubuntu numbers go up and they'll probably offer more linux hardware.
You are not comparing OS's but GUI's and market positions and third party software manufacturers. If you want to compare OS's. Then talk about Linux (monolithic OS) or NT (server-client OS). And GIMP is not limited to three window. You can have just two window (GIMP tools + photos). You only need to know how to tweak the GUI. But you seem not to understand that the GUI does not belong to the OS itself. So you can not understand how to actually compare apps.
@TheFri13 Well in the end it all comes down to the programs one needs, regardless of how powerful the OS might be. I know someone who has to have some Win98 because of his special printer;drivers are crippled for newer Windoze.
Two years ago the physics department of my university had to buy a whole bunch of XP Thinkpads due to some measurements kit. Again the manufacturer seems to ignore Linux. Needless to say that the profs were troubled over that, Linux is everywhere these days.
Well, the next gimp version is supposed to have a single-window option. Syncing with your i-phone should be fixed with ubuntu 10.04. But, photophop really seems to be the major issue. You should see if it runs well enough for you under wine. Here's a how to:
if you really did pay for all that software licenses you're speaking about on windows... I think you might be much better off with a mac.. period.
when you want something real bad, there's at least a little bit of effort required at 'understanding that stuff' in order to have what you want... if not, just go mainstream, don't bother on idle stuff... like this video.
I kinda am curious what the last version of Ubuntu you ran was. I'm currently running 9.04 on my desktop quad core machine and also my Dell Mini 10v netbook and I could not be happier. Everything just works. If you tried 9.10 and had issues, trust me your not the only one. Even with all current updates 9.10 sucks balls. I can't wait for 10.04 to get here its gonna be a huge release milestone for Ubuntu.

Here's a how to:
wiki dot
winehq dot
org slash
AdobePhotoshop

use the wine program to run photoshop

if you really did pay for all that software licenses you're speaking about on windows...
