@lautenist4711 now it could happen to the show, which was called disco rock song. At that time, disco was still a concept so that the show took and rock bands.
Slade were the first band I ever saw live, not a bad gig to start with. That was late 1973 & they were probably the biggest band in the UK at the time. I still miss going to see them. Slade II aren't the same, not without Noddy's voice. (It's like Queen without Freddie!)
you can very clearly hear at least some kind of distortion effect, probably analog. even though his raw singing voice is surely amazing as well, please don't delude yourself into thinking it's what you hear in this video. was probably a bad idea to ask this on youtube..
@Diosukekun No delusion is needed. For one sound quality is debatable on YouTube. The sound drops.Secondly having heard this song performed live several times I can assure you Nod's voice needed NO help in sounding raw. Add to that the fact that Nod personally hated gimmicks of the nature you mention along with Chas Chandler Slades manager. What you DO her is the fact that Chas used double tracked vocals which give a fuller sound. But the voice is all Nod's and not some machine's.
@Diosukekun As others have commented that is basically Noddy's amazing raw voice ! However I do think there is a bit of reverb applied - which makes it a little fuller than on some of the raunchier tracks such as Gudbuy't Jane - nothing fancy though.
I see Slade at the Rainbow Theatre, London, in 1973, backed by Thin Lizzie and Suzi Quatro. Still to this day, the best gig I ever went to. Long live Noddy and the boys.
The tune takes me back to my hometown, Chatsworth,Durban, South Africa. I salute my uncle Timer Joe who introduced me to Slade way back when I was little. To this day both of us still dig Slade although now we are both far far away from each other.
Go to Facebook and like the page 'Lets make Slade's 'Merry Xmas Everybody' to number one this Xmas' as its the only way to get a real British classic Christmas song back to the top where it deserves to be!
Classic Slade. Lea's melodic baseline , Noddy's voice and Hill's guitar complementing both should have made this song a regular on classic rock stations- at least in the UK. Sadly its forgotten worldwide.
There are no actual 'effects'. The Harmony's were sometimes multitracked but thats it! If you know Slade then you should know that they didn't need effects.
@Diosukekun Noddy doesn't use effects, 100% natural, that is his voice, that's how he sings. Noddy himself recounted being sent to a voice specialist and being told that there was "nothing he could do for him" :D
@RockLeesBitch i'm sorry but you are simply wrong. i'm not saying he can't sing anything like this, but it's obvious he's using at least SOME effects in this performance.
To the folks dissing Slade, Slade happens to have written some of the most memorable rock songs of the 20th century. Quiet Riot's Cum On Feel The Noise and Mama Weer All Crazee Now; and Britny Fox's Gudbuy To Jane. Kizz's Gene Simmons considers Slade an inspiration. Slade had musical versatility and shitloads of spunk. They were innovators. Rock On Slade.
Probably my favourite track from the boys! Seem to recall it raised a few eyebrows at the time (1974) because it was a total change in style from previous single releases?

It would have been better if 80's bands had been recorded now and the new "music" recorded back then because new stuff sounds terrible whatever quality it's played in. :c Slade<3
@Izznogood63 Nope. 80 s Slade is freakin E-P-I-C. Don t be fooled by sales numbers going down after 1976. The media let them down. I can listen to their last 3 or 4 albums everyday without getting bored. One of the truly best and versatile bands of alltime. Also, they continuously evolved during their entire careers.
Amazing! Makes my spirit get higher! Thank you lads for you and for your great music! It's a pity that we can't listen such music as this today instead of shit that they call music these days!
I saw them in 1982 in Derby and they were still great then, never been to a better concert. Get together again for one last tour lads, would be awesome. And it is time it was Sir Noddy Holder, if they can give it to Jagger they can give it to anyone.
@Izznogood63 Mate, you couldn't be more wrong. they got back together with 3days notice to play Reading 80 and totally blew the top line acts away. Best live Act of all time and I've seen 'em all Led Zep et al. Their album material is very heavy. Noddy is very proud that Slade were a very hard rocking and annoyed that they never get cred for it as they came around during the Glam era. Enormous amount of material and back catalogue on top of the million sellers. Wish they would re-group!!!!

@Kootje792 i cant say their best song ever cos they have so many top class hits its to hard to pick one track to be the best.p.s nice to here from people that apreciate slade rather than negative comments posted from retards
this came from not the best movie ever but the soundtrack one of the best from any movie from all time. JUST ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM FROM ONE OF THE WORLDS BEST BANDS.
I consider Slade more a Blue Color Band (exept Dave Hill, he would fit better in with the Sweet with all the glam and glitter) I also think that Slade had better managers etc behind them - Sweet was forced into something they were not by Chin and Chapman among others
if there are fools out there who are seriouse about noddys vocals being crap,,let me give you some sound advice,,go and learn some musical knowledge,,because what you know at the moment,,l wouldnt put on a fagpaper,,wake up you imbicileand get real

TEDDINGTROLL ARE YOU TALKING TO YOURSELF??? RETARD GET A LIFE IF YOU CAN I KNOW IT IS HARD FOR YOU AT AGE 51. IF YOU DISGUST SLADE AND THEIR FANS WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU DOING HERE FRUSTRATED VILLAIN SHUT THE HELL UP AND PUT YOUR CRAP IN YOUR MOMMY S BASEMENT !!
teddingtonctu, you call this "tomfoolery"? You are a mental tard. O.K. Slade "sucks". Can you grow up now and get a real ife at 51? I am feeling really sorry for you, what a sad existence is that!
Global warming or the drugs trade will do for you sludge. bumming around scrounging off the american tourists will soon no longer be an option for you sludge.
Yes, its the 'rum shop' for you...................Ha Ha 33 yrs old I bet they dont listen to Slade down the rum shop do dey bruvver. Go suck toads ( only the pretty and poisonous ones that is) Ha HA Ha
@teddingtontcu I am in Birmingham NOW and TEDDINGCOWARD IS FAR FAR AWAY HAHAHA WHERE ARE YOU COWARD I HAVE GIVEN YOU FLIGHT NUMBER. YOU SAID YOU COULD NOT MAKE THE JOURNEY IN 24 HOURS FROM LONDON HAHAHA LOSER. NOT EVEN A GOOD TRY BY TEDDINGTROLL TO WRIGGLE OUT OF IT !!! CHEERIO !!
Best Slade song ever. Jim Lea is such a great writer. Everybody thinks of Noddy and Dave Hill when Slade are mentioned but JL was the ace musician of the band.
@boo66 Noddy co-wrote the songs. Noddy's singing was distinctive and a crucial part of the Slade sound. As Nod and Jim have often said take one band member away there would have been no Slade.
in spanish ,la banda las grane lamas ,, in german die grobte band aller zieten,, in french le plus grand groupe au monde ,, where i am just pure magic
@midmodgal Your not listening to the lyrics very well are you.Nor do you know much Slade history. The song was written when Nod looked out from a hotel balcony. He saw all the lights across the city. Yet as the lyric says 'But the call of home is loud, still as loud' Thats where he points out that although he was visiting different countries he still felt the pull of home. He has said often enough how the song came about. So please learn some before posting. It helps a lot.
to all who mentioned paul mcartney let me tell you he sucks. The most pompous arragonte bast**d you could meet. My father met him and he said he was the most horribl man he had ever spoken to
@derek6678421 Yep and an ignorant git to boot. Listen to Beatles songs and you can see which were written by John and those of Pauls. In fact few of the songs were really written together but they had a management agreement to put out songs as Lennon/Macartney.A few years back Paul did a live album were he relisted the songs as being Macartney and Lennon. Egotistical bastard.
@derek6678421 Agreed Sir, Sir Paul is a very cocky horrible man. Unfortunately there are too many Sir Paul 'conformists' in this world influenced by the media. In fact, his solo albums after the Beatles split up are onedimensional and he has not evolved. Slade have continuously evolved to new styles and sounds and created the most real tunes. Slade have reached the highest calibre of songwriting in the 80s, best UK band ever, more versatile than the Beatles. Influence is a different story.
@teddingdonkey didn t you say yerself that Slade had "authenticity"??? Whose bandwagon did they jump on??? Don t all these artists now and in the past jump on other people s bandwagons??? More acts need to thank these "idiots" than the other way around. Ask Noel Gallagher, Ozzy Osbourne, Gene Simmons, David Bowie, Brian May, etc. Why didn t you do it yourself and sell 60 Mio records fuckin muppet loser without a real life. That is why you are still here at 51 tossing and trolling. You wanker.
@Greenthigh I am reading more posts with the same contents, I am afraid Sir Paul had many many bad days, unfortunately. I admit I would also become as arrogant and thick if I was sort of overrated and overhyped as he has been. After his beatles episode, has he really progressed or diversified? Nah.....
@derek6678421 YEah, years back when my husband and I were discussing our son's Baptism dinner plan, the chef/ owner of the restaurant told me he met Paul and said the same thing about him!!!
@derek6678421 I totaly agree. See his interviews with letterman and/or his response to John Lennon's death. He is difinatelly an AH. It's a shame, because I used to be a big Beatles fan untill i knew paul a little more.
Luv a bit o' Slade me....brutal...!!! ;P

@Kootje792 i cant say their best song ever cos they have so many top class hits its to hard to pick one track to be the best.p.s nice to here from people that apreciate slade rather than negative comments posted from retards
douglasgh2 1 year ago
@douglasgh2 True, that's why I put it this way. To me, this is the best. But we all have our favourites.
I never see the point in slagging things off in comments. If you don't like? Go elsewhere! Happy holidays!

@douglasgh2
Back in the 70'ties in Denmark you were Sweet or Slade fan - could not be both :o)
I was Sweet fan (even though it would have been more cool to be Slade fan as rest of my class)
But even though I am a Sweet Fan (since 1973) I would say that this is one of the best songs of Slade and I enjoy listining to it
isgren8 1 year ago
@isgren8 i think slade are the best but sweet had some good hits too everybody to their own
douglasgh2 1 year ago
@douglasgh2
That is right everybody to their own
I consider Slade more a Blue Color Band (exept Dave Hill, he would fit better in with the Sweet with all the glam and glitter) I also think that Slade had better managers etc behind them - Sweet was forced into something they were not by Chin and Chapman among others

Oh, lighten up! OK- I'll get my Slade fun elsewhere. Merry Christmas everybody!!! :D

Best Slade song ever. Jim Lea is such a great writer. Everybody thinks of Noddy and Dave Hill when Slade are mentioned but JL was the ace musician of the band.
boo66 1 year ago
@boo66 Noddy co-wrote the songs. Noddy's singing was distinctive and a crucial part of the Slade sound. As Nod and Jim have often said take one band member away there would have been no Slade.
Sladedestiny 1 year ago
lol, Noddy's got Beethoven's hair and an Abraham Lincoln beard, dressed like Elvis Presley and sounding like a classic.

Noddy's digging the fact that as a rock-star he's been able to travel the world.
Best Slade song period.
midmodgal 1 year ago
@midmodgal No he's actually saying that although he had travelled the world the call of HOME was just as loud and he couldn't wait to be there.
Sladedestiny 1 year ago
@Sladedestiny You don't think he enjoyed going to all these places? The extensive
touring obviously inspired this song. I don't wish to seem pedantic but there's nothing in this song to indicate that he was in a rush to get home.
midmodgal 1 year ago
@midmodgal Your not listening to the lyrics very well are you.Nor do you know much Slade history. The song was written when Nod looked out from a hotel balcony. He saw all the lights across the city. Yet as the lyric says 'But the call of home is loud, still as loud' Thats where he points out that although he was visiting different countries he still felt the pull of home. He has said often enough how the song came about. So please learn some before posting. It helps a lot.
Sladedestiny 1 year ago
to all who mentioned paul mcartney let me tell you he sucks. The most pompous arragonte bast**d you could meet. My father met him and he said he was the most horribl man he had ever spoken to
derek6678421 1 year ago 8
@derek6678421 Yep and an ignorant git to boot. Listen to Beatles songs and you can see which were written by John and those of Pauls. In fact few of the songs were really written together but they had a management agreement to put out songs as Lennon/Macartney.A few years back Paul did a live album were he relisted the songs as being Macartney and Lennon. Egotistical bastard.
Sladedestiny 1 year ago
@derek6678421 Agreed Sir, Sir Paul is a very cocky horrible man. Unfortunately there are too many Sir Paul 'conformists' in this world influenced by the media. In fact, his solo albums after the Beatles split up are onedimensional and he has not evolved. Slade have continuously evolved to new styles and sounds and created the most real tunes. Slade have reached the highest calibre of songwriting in the 80s, best UK band ever, more versatile than the Beatles. Influence is a different story.
proslade 1 year ago
@proslade They were opportunists always trying to seek pop(ularity) Singular cowards always jumping on other peoples bandwagons.
Why dont you jump on something you Pro(bable) QQQQQQQQQQQQQUUUUEER
teddingtontcu 1 year ago
@teddingdonkey didn t you say yerself that Slade had "authenticity"??? Whose bandwagon did they jump on??? Don t all these artists now and in the past jump on other people s bandwagons??? More acts need to thank these "idiots" than the other way around. Ask Noel Gallagher, Ozzy Osbourne, Gene Simmons, David Bowie, Brian May, etc. Why didn t you do it yourself and sell 60 Mio records fuckin muppet loser without a real life. That is why you are still here at 51 tossing and trolling. You wanker.
carlphone 1 year ago
@derek6678421 maybe your dad caught Paul on a bad day, mate. We all have them - even former Beatles.
Greenthigh 1 year ago
@Greenthigh I am reading more posts with the same contents, I am afraid Sir Paul had many many bad days, unfortunately. I admit I would also become as arrogant and thick if I was sort of overrated and overhyped as he has been. After his beatles episode, has he really progressed or diversified? Nah.....
proslade 1 year ago
@proslade agreed. His solo career has been an absolute disaster.
Greenthigh 1 year ago
@derek6678421 YEah, years back when my husband and I were discussing our son's Baptism dinner plan, the chef/ owner of the restaurant told me he met Paul and said the same thing about him!!!
lalba07 1 year ago
@derek6678421 I totaly agree. See his interviews with letterman and/or his response to John Lennon's death. He is difinatelly an AH. It's a shame, because I used to be a big Beatles fan untill i knew paul a little more.
