wooooo... did i hear you right? you said, "Rode VideoMic is NOT a Shotgun mic"??? were have you been? the Rode is a Camera Mounted Shotgun Mic.. that's what most people use in making video's/movies... The one you have is the old version that cost $149.00 dollars... the new one is called RODE VideoMic Pro, which is more compacted and is $229.00...
they're is setting's on your Rode mic the adjust the sound input.... but to say that cheapo mic you have now is better than any Rode, is "CRAZY"...
@rickvanman Hi Rick I was wondering can this mic be connected via XLR into the H4N? I'm really considering one of these the price and quality are amazing! Thanks in advance!!!
Hey rick, I just discovered your channel and I think you're great! You should do a video testing the microphone in all different environments and really put it through it's paces. I'd really like to see that!
Hey Rick I had bought one of those mics 2 years ago and i connected it onto my mini tripod with the mount that comes with the mic and it broke so i bought a another mount off ebay (plastic)
pretty much the same one that came with the mic and that was fine no issues i was wondering if i got a dud or is the mount cheaply built??? Coolkid599gto
@coolkid599gto Well, the plastic is cheap and nasty, although you might have got a dud holder as i've never had an issue with mine. glad to hear you were able to get a replacement
@elliottower123 Hi, I have a 550d (british name for the T2i) and yeah, you just plug it straight into the microphone jack, but you may need an adaptor to convert from the 1/4" jack size to 3.5mm size, and they're less than a dollar on ebay!
@marcusdavid88 you should get a lead with balanced XLR outputs, this will probanly solve the problem also the lead is probably not long enough which can also cause interference.
I love your videos, I watched many of them- nice projects and advices :-)
I was considering to buy the shotgon-microphone a while ago, and just did a search again... While there where one or two offers in the past, now many offer a "14.37" shotgun microphone for 15 to 30 €...
Are the cheaper ones any different? Or should I buy a specific one? Thanks :-)
Hi Rick, your wind covers for the Zoom H2, do they have access points at the sides for microphone/headphone/external power sockets, or do you slide the cover over the cables, so that the cables come out of the bottom and not the sides? Many thanks, Tony
hey mate can you please help me, i got one of these the other day, im running if through my guitar amp with headphones and comes out perfect, but when i run it though my camera all i get is hissing and crackeling and have to hold the input to keep it in stereo
Mic placement is key for good audio. When you had the HTDZ HT-81 on it looked like you had it quite a distance from you which made the audio seem hollow and far away. If you brought it closer like 2 feet from your voice then I bet the audio quality would be much better.

@ottoelperro Yes i agree, however the mic was actually in the wrong position for optimum sound, should be closer, and/or above the mead pointing to the mouth/chest. You will get better bass this way :)
Hey! I just recently subscribed. You see, I'm currently making a short film at my school and it's roughly 5-10 minutes of just walking around. I used a make-shift shoulder-mount for my camcorder out of an old tripod and I was wondering if a shoulder-mount is the best stabilizer for films that move around(side-ways) a lot. OR would you suggest a better alternative? Also, what type of external microphone would be most useful for a shot like this?
Splendid job with the videos by the way! 2thumbsup
@dual08 Thanks 4 the sub :o) - Cheap sholder mounts are generally not very good, try looking up "plank cam" or "plastic bag steadicam" - might give better results. Difficult to know what mic - what sounds do you want to record?
@rickvanman Oh, the plank cam is actually a pretty good idea BUT my one shot unedited sequence requires the camera to be able to enter and exit a car through the car's window. At the same time, the camera must be easy to handle since it's going to be passed from one cameraman to another. Could a smaller plank cam do the trick? Or will it defeat the purpose of a better stability?
Also, I'm planning on recording VERY short conversations from afar. Could a separate recorder do the trick?
@dual08 Tricky - not really sure what to suggest - you'll definitely need a seperate recording device for distant dialogue. Zoom H2 might be good with a lapel mic pinned the the person speaking.
I was thinking of buying this, but now I've seen this video. I feel I just can't agree with you or the commenters who say the HDTZ is at least as good or better than the Rode. Hi Rick, first of all its a delight to watch your review, well done. And I agree, the sound on the china mic sounds better. Ive got a question if you dont mind though. Anyways I need some advice because my camera doesn't have mic input so was thinking of what budget and cheap sound recorder like below $100 to use with the boom mic because I'm quite tight with the finances. Any recommendation?
@fatfatboy5 use it right = hold it above your talent's head pointing it down at the ground. Not sure of any good recorders under $100 perhaps another YouTuber can advise by replying here
Hi rick, I have a question for. I am a sounding engineer and I will be using a Aaton Cantar to record a short film using Hf mhf. but the problem is that I don't know how to use this machine. can you explain it to me? Thank you
hi rick. im totally new to film recording and making. i want a good cheap shotgun mic and this one doesnt seem to be available any more. any ideas or tips to help me?
@mogulkey hi - it was a couple of weeks i think. I'm pretty sure there will be a deadcat out there somewhere. i hope to make one myself and make it available on eBay soon, but I'm just so busy right now I haven't found the time to get on with it.
Just a couple of tips, instead of using a 1/4'' to 1/8'' jack adapter, I would recommend to change the big jack for a smaller one on the cable itself, it's easy and you can do it yourself. It really reduces the risk of breaking the jack input. how is that mic doing after all this time? I'm considering buying it. Thanks rick
Thanks for your comments which I have noted - we all glean knowledge from these reviews and Rickvanman is one of the best. I still say the Rode is well worth the extra - for me it's the sound that carries the pictures and only the best is good enough - I hate compromise. Best Wishes.
So I just bought this microphone and it got here yesterday. It's weird, because when I plug it in to my camera (sony handycam DCR-HC20) it doesn't seem to pick up the audio. I can't figure out what's wrong. I tested the microphone on my computer and it works fine. Is there some special adapter you need for it to work with camcorders?
Great review - well delivered - the "Rode" sounded absolutely superb and well worth the increased cost - The demonstrated shotgun mic is unbelievably priced but it really sounds thin and harsh - I know you can e.q. it at the editing stage but the Rode has it all - full frequency - smooth and clear with nice mid to low end - Cheers for that - I will stay away from the Hong Kong crap..
@mixwizard2310 If you want to spend the extra money that's fine. I bought this mic for $30 shipping and handling and it works fine for the money. The Rodes mic is $130+. I'll buy 2 more of these mics over the coming months. The $200 I'm saving from the rodes will buy another camera.
I'm using the microphone with a sony dv dcr-trv93, getting a loud hum when using the tele option on the mic, can anybody shed some helpful light on this, how I can reduce this, is it my camera? Thank you
@loverofilm try using it outside away from any electrical equipment. if the hum stops then its probably caused by inteference from other electrical items being in close proximity to the lead.
You can easily up the low end in post with an audio program. For the price, its worth doing alittle bit of work with the audio. Still going to be damn better then the on board mic.
@sausagenmuff That would be true, if it was truly devoid of any low end at all. If you have some low end, you can always use an EQ to pull that up. Personally, I hear a good amount of low end in this. I acturally recorded some of this audio and pulled out alot of the high end, and drastically uped to low end. I'll pm it to you if you'd like! Its not like you want floor shaking bass from this thing, so I don't believe it would be an issue.
@cyrax037 I'm thinking that the people that are calling this mic crap are not worried about low/no budget film making and have the extra $100 to shell out for the higher end equipment.
@sausagenmuff Price is the issue here. His tips are for low/no budget filmmakers not people that have the extra money to pay for more expensive equipment. Rick did not mention that the mic has 2 settings that change the sound a little. One setting is shotgun and you record at range. The second lets in more of the side noise and does have a little more depth of sound though again you get what you pay for and here cheap is not crap just not the best more money can pay for.
yes, but I would think that most onbaord mic's perform better than this. so it's not really saving money, unless your using it for a boom, and using this for a boom would be ludicrous. Just my 2 cents, dont let me stop anyone from getting it.
I have a NTG-2 and yes it's expencive, but i've gone though lots of cheap mics and learned the long way that there just not worth it
@sausagenmuff Again you throw more money at your mic then I have to spend. This mic is better then any one board mic and I use it as a boom with acceptable results. Do I get big dollar mic quality? No. But I do get better results then I do on the on board mic and I can place this mic much closer. It sounds to me like you have a larger budget then I do and can afford to spend a few hundred on just a mic where as I spent $110 on my camera cause it was all I had.
OH $hit son, you got me there LOL, if your camera cost 110 dollars that mic would be better yes I agree with you now. I didnt expect to hear anyone using under around a $3,000 for a camera.
@sausagenmuff a $3000 camera? WOW where have you been hiding? A $3000 camera is a completely professional grade, and if your using that, then you defiantly are going to spend a few hundred on a mic too. I'm sorry, but if that's the kind of camera you expected, you are sorely out of the loop. Check into cams, like the HV30,40, ect. The Canon HV40, is an HD camera, very popular among the Indymogul community!
@sausagenmuff LOL, well, take a crack at the HV40, and I'll take the 3 grand one off your hands for ya LMAO.
But, since the majority of us don't have 3 grand to toss around, usually the HV40/Hv30 or equivalent are sufficient enough for most semi-beginner Indy filmmakers!
@cyrax037 just looked it up. thats a soccer mom camera.. it would be good to learn on if your not sure about what you want to do. but if you want to make anything to show to the public, bite the bullet and get a real camera. you gotta spend money to make money.
@sausagenmuff If you say so mate. But if you $3000 camera is so shitty, why didn't you just lay out another 3 grand for an even better one? I know the cam the local news uses out in the field is around that, and honestly, I didn't think the footage was any better then what I've seen on the HV series, being HD and all.
you get what you pay for. try the HV in low light settings for example. usually a news station camera is a little over 100 grand, unless you live in a EXTREMELY small town.
@sausagenmuff haha, well, acturally, I do. But the News Station is based in a larger city(Pop, 37,525) and I have personally seen one of the field camera's becuz they did a story on the local community theater that I'm highly involved in, and talked with the camera man about it. It was a downgrade due to budget issues, but even it was a $6000 cam!
And I have seen the HV30's low light capabilities, there is a vid here on youtube for it!
Very nice review... can anyone help me where can I find the ebay store to buy this. Did some search but the only link I found is the product page with no buying options...
If anyone is looking for a shock-mount go to amazon. I found this one really cheap. "Universal Shock-mount Shotgun Microphone Holder" It made by a company called AZDEN. So you can put the mic on the hot shoe of your camcorder.
I mean, is this mic use BALANCED MONO XLR or STEREO. And can you tell me if 6 meter cable will have same quality audio as 10 meters. The price is the same and I just wonder. If quality is same I will take 10 meters just in case (but I think 6 meters is long enough for amateur filming, maybe you can help me out here) thanks
As a rule, the shorter the cable, the less liklihood there is of interference.
Personally, unless in a stationary seated setup, If I had to film with the talent over a meter or two away, I would record the sound independently. I find the whole actors acting with audio extension leads plugged ionto camera thing quite scary. One tug or trip on the lead and its bye bye camera, or at least camera socket - especially if its a 3.5mm jack
I want this cable to be able to use mic outside pluged direct to cam without any adaptors that I can move my cam with no noise from moving adapter. I think that could be good idea. Thanks
I wasn't sure to buy this mic and I was looking everywhere for some info and after 4 days i found your video. This sellers should attach your link to this video on thier offer. But anyway I have question to you:
did this mic is stereo or mono?
I want to buy XLR to 3.5mm jack cable and I'm not sure what XLR choose (mono or stereo) becouse jack I want to be stereo.
They do not have this MIC on Ebay anymore. they might be out of stock. or a new model is coming out. There was another kid reviewing this MIC and he said of a store selling this mic and they did not have it. A lot things are out of stock after X-MESS.
hey Rick i ordered this exact microphone on ebay. and i was so excited when it came in today! but i dont know how to hook it up to my camcorder, i have a sony hdr xr500v camcorder and it wont fit on top of the camcorder where it has a slot for it. and i dont know where to plug it in
Just received this camera in the mail today. The first two tests ended up with some unwanted whitenoise, hissing sounds. The sound only went away when I held the mic a few inches away from my mouth, which isn't ideal. Is your mic boomed from up high in this video or pointed straight at you? How far from you is it approximately?
I'm thinking of getting this shotgun mic, however the camera we use at school only has XLR inputs, so, I was thinking, as it comes with an XLR To 3.5 wire, wouldn't I just be able to replace this with XLR to XLR?
Hi Rick, thank God I found you! Some fantastic tips that have helped me out! Can you tell me though, with only a small budget, what single mic would be best to record a drum kit in a sound proofed, dampened studio? Will sync the sound later with the video. Regards, Steve
Rick! great video.. i really enjoy your low budget tips and tricks.. i bought the H2 cuz you recommended (thanks!), but i have a question.. can MIC hook up to my H2 ZOOM? have you tried it? thanks again! keep up the good work.
nuggets of truth is closed mate just so u know also at 2:54 (i could be completely wrong and i apologise if u know already and i'm wastin ur time) it look as if it would thread onto a boom pole and hold the mic 90degrees to the pole (for interview purpose) just thought i'd say =P
depends if any of those sockets are designed for a mic. From what you say, probably not - might be worth looking into recording sound independently of the camera and matching them up in editing.
Rick, I am hooked on your videos. unbelievable useful information. Thank you so much. my question is, I want to buy the HTDZ HT-81 shotgun mic and I want to use it on my DV Canon ZR60. Are there certain settings I need to change on my camera to use an external mic? I tryed testing it with a cheap hand held mic and I can't seem to get any sound out of it. Thanks again for your info and time and please keep those videos coming. Gino

The HTDZ HT-81 only has a Frequency Response of: 100Hz-16KHz
For professional use i would say you want 20hz to 20khz (human range of hearing).
Tho for the price it's not bad, i would also recommend always using a shock mount (pretty cheap on ebay).
I have to thank you for your review of the Zoom H2 as it helped me in my purchase and got me on the road to becoming a sound engineer.
With your talents i would love to see you come up with a home made pistol grip, possibly compatible with the H2

I disagree a lot with your findings. The quality of your main mic is much better, than the shotugn mic. The shotugn sounds very tinny

@shaneika09 are there adapters I could use? Please help!
shaneika09 1 year ago
Just a couple of tips, instead of using a 1/4'' to 1/8'' jack adapter, I would recommend to change the big jack for a smaller one on the cable itself, it's easy and you can do it yourself. It really reduces the risk of breaking the jack input. how is that mic doing after all this time? I'm considering buying it. Thanks rick

@MaghoxFr thanks fore the tip. To be frank, Since I got the Zoom H2 mic, I've hardly touched any of my other mics.

Thanks for your comments which I have noted - we all glean knowledge from these reviews and Rickvanman is one of the best. I still say the Rode is well worth the extra - for me it's the sound that carries the pictures and only the best is good enough - I hate compromise. Best Wishes.
mixwizard2310 1 year ago
So I just bought this microphone and it got here yesterday. It's weird, because when I plug it in to my camera (sony handycam DCR-HC20) it doesn't seem to pick up the audio. I can't figure out what's wrong. I tested the microphone on my computer and it works fine. Is there some special adapter you need for it to work with camcorders?
wannnacruise 1 year ago
@wannnacruise not that I know of. Have you checked to make sure the battery is good AND the mic is physically switched on?
Do other standard 3-pin mics plug in to your camera and work ok?
rickvanman 1 year ago
Great review - well delivered - the "Rode" sounded absolutely superb and well worth the increased cost - The demonstrated shotgun mic is unbelievably priced but it really sounds thin and harsh - I know you can e.q. it at the editing stage but the Rode has it all - full frequency - smooth and clear with nice mid to low end - Cheers for that - I will stay away from the Hong Kong crap..
mixwizard2310 1 year ago
@mixwizard2310 If you want to spend the extra money that's fine. I bought this mic for $30 shipping and handling and it works fine for the money. The Rodes mic is $130+. I'll buy 2 more of these mics over the coming months. The $200 I'm saving from the rodes will buy another camera.

I'm using the microphone with a sony dv dcr-trv93, getting a loud hum when using the tele option on the mic, can anybody shed some helpful light on this, how I can reduce this, is it my camera? Thank you
loverofilm 1 year ago
@loverofilm try using it outside away from any electrical equipment. if the hum stops then its probably caused by inteference from other electrical items being in close proximity to the lead.
rickvanman 1 year ago
maybe it's just me, but that mic sounds like shit to me, all the bass rolled off
sausagenmuff 2 years ago
You can easily up the low end in post with an audio program. For the price, its worth doing alittle bit of work with the audio. Still going to be damn better then the on board mic.
cyrax037 2 years ago
@cyrax037 no you can't. that's not how audio works, you cannot get something from nothing.
Don't get me wrong, for the price it's hard to beat, but it's quality is sub even par.
sausagenmuff 2 years ago
@sausagenmuff That would be true, if it was truly devoid of any low end at all. If you have some low end, you can always use an EQ to pull that up. Personally, I hear a good amount of low end in this. I acturally recorded some of this audio and pulled out alot of the high end, and drastically uped to low end. I'll pm it to you if you'd like! Its not like you want floor shaking bass from this thing, so I don't believe it would be an issue.
cyrax037 2 years ago
@cyrax037 I'm thinking that the people that are calling this mic crap are not worried about low/no budget film making and have the extra $100 to shell out for the higher end equipment.
poppabear42330 1 year ago
@sausagenmuff Price is the issue here. His tips are for low/no budget filmmakers not people that have the extra money to pay for more expensive equipment. Rick did not mention that the mic has 2 settings that change the sound a little. One setting is shotgun and you record at range. The second lets in more of the side noise and does have a little more depth of sound though again you get what you pay for and here cheap is not crap just not the best more money can pay for.
poppabear42330 1 year ago
@poppabear42330
yes, but I would think that most onbaord mic's perform better than this. so it's not really saving money, unless your using it for a boom, and using this for a boom would be ludicrous. Just my 2 cents, dont let me stop anyone from getting it.
I have a NTG-2 and yes it's expencive, but i've gone though lots of cheap mics and learned the long way that there just not worth it
sausagenmuff 1 year ago
@sausagenmuff Again you throw more money at your mic then I have to spend. This mic is better then any one board mic and I use it as a boom with acceptable results. Do I get big dollar mic quality? No. But I do get better results then I do on the on board mic and I can place this mic much closer. It sounds to me like you have a larger budget then I do and can afford to spend a few hundred on just a mic where as I spent $110 on my camera cause it was all I had.
poppabear42330 1 year ago
@poppabear42330
OH $hit son, you got me there LOL, if your camera cost 110 dollars that mic would be better yes I agree with you now. I didnt expect to hear anyone using under around a $3,000 for a camera.
sausagenmuff 1 year ago
@sausagenmuff a $3000 camera? WOW where have you been hiding? A $3000 camera is a completely professional grade, and if your using that, then you defiantly are going to spend a few hundred on a mic too. I'm sorry, but if that's the kind of camera you expected, you are sorely out of the loop. Check into cams, like the HV30,40, ect. The Canon HV40, is an HD camera, very popular among the Indymogul community!
cyrax037 1 year ago
@cyrax037 to each there own. my cam is 3 grand and i think it's shit quality.
sausagenmuff 1 year ago
@sausagenmuff LOL, well, take a crack at the HV40, and I'll take the 3 grand one off your hands for ya LMAO.
But, since the majority of us don't have 3 grand to toss around, usually the HV40/Hv30 or equivalent are sufficient enough for most semi-beginner Indy filmmakers!
cyrax037 1 year ago
@cyrax037 just looked it up. thats a soccer mom camera.. it would be good to learn on if your not sure about what you want to do. but if you want to make anything to show to the public, bite the bullet and get a real camera. you gotta spend money to make money.
sausagenmuff 1 year ago
@sausagenmuff If you say so mate. But if you $3000 camera is so shitty, why didn't you just lay out another 3 grand for an even better one? I know the cam the local news uses out in the field is around that, and honestly, I didn't think the footage was any better then what I've seen on the HV series, being HD and all.
cyrax037 1 year ago
@cyrax037
you get what you pay for. try the HV in low light settings for example. usually a news station camera is a little over 100 grand, unless you live in a EXTREMELY small town.
sausagenmuff 1 year ago
@sausagenmuff haha, well, acturally, I do. But the News Station is based in a larger city(Pop, 37,525) and I have personally seen one of the field camera's becuz they did a story on the local community theater that I'm highly involved in, and talked with the camera man about it. It was a downgrade due to budget issues, but even it was a $6000 cam!
And I have seen the HV30's low light capabilities, there is a vid here on youtube for it!
cyrax037 1 year ago
@sausagenmuff I forgot to mention, the HV40 retails for about $800, you can pick it up used for about $600

If anyone is looking for a shock-mount go to amazon. I found this one really cheap. "Universal Shock-mount Shotgun Microphone Holder" It made by a company called AZDEN. So you can put the mic on the hot shoe of your camcorder.
ngvgnDOTcom 2 years ago
a solution to having all those jacks hanging off the camera is a simple 35mm elbow converter so it hangs down the camera instead of straight off

2tea2room 2 years ago
As far as I am aware it's mono.
One tug or trip on the lead and its bye bye camera, or at least camera socket - especially if its a 3.5mm jack
rickvanman 2 years ago
THANKS ! and all the best!
2tea2room 2 years ago
I want this cable to be able to use mic outside pluged direct to cam without any adaptors that I can move my cam with no noise from moving adapter. I think that could be good idea. Thanks

Hi,
Thank tou very much for this video!

The Hong Kong Mic has a much more richer sound. Do you know if they make a stereo mic as well?
ngvgnDOTcom 2 years ago
Hi Rick,
Just received this camera in the mail today. The first two tests ended up with some unwanted whitenoise, hissing sounds. The sound only went away when I held the mic a few inches away from my mouth, which isn't ideal. Is your mic boomed from up high in this video or pointed straight at you? How far from you is it approximately?
Thanks mate :)
mannymolecular 2 years ago
The HTDZ HT-81 mic was sat next to the camera in this video. it was about 8 - 8 feet away.
Make sure your battery (in the mic) is good. I had a hiss issue with a poor battery. good luck.

I'm thinking of getting this shotgun mic, however the camera we use at school only has XLR inputs, so, I was thinking, as it comes with an XLR To 3.5 wire, wouldn't I just be able to replace this with XLR to XLR?

@frasierfreak92 Yes - this will work just fine - alternatively you could record your audio using a separate device and then sync it later on...

Hi Rick, thank God I found you! Some fantastic tips that have helped me out! Can you tell me though, with only a small budget, what single mic would be best to record a drum kit in a sound proofed, dampened studio? Will sync the sound later with the video. Regards, Steve

depends if any of those sockets are designed for a mic. From what you say, probably not - might be worth looking into recording sound independently of the camera and matching them up in editing.
