Actually you can get a 500GB. This doesn't do any harm to your PS3 as some people are saying. Sony actually put this here so people can upgrade without voiding warranty.

its kinda od what ive done but i like it what i have done is put linux on a 160gb hard drive and left all the game stuff on one hard drive and when i want linux i jst swich to linux and when i want ps3 games i put in the other drive its realy quit easy

you can back up your files onto an external hard drive and then copy them onto the new one you want to use for the ps3

so what about the operating system that comes on the ps3? do you need to replace that also?

The operating system is onbored so there is know need on installing or putting files onto the hardrive! when you put the new hard drive into the ps3 it will auto format the drive.

You put it on a flash drive install the new drive then it will ask for the flash
