  • Thanks a lot, Brent... Your tips have really improved my serve. Keep up the good work! God bless.

  • @skybrowserfox Glad you liked this tip. Brent

  • sometimes i just end my second serves with my racquet on my right side, . also helps kick the ball

  • @millionairejh Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, and lots of the great servers showed us how that works for extra spin. Be careful though, your elbow and shoulder are at risk... Brent

  • i just found out how too hit a second serve properly, and it goes in really well. it also bounces away from the opponent at the last second. better too have a good second serve than a first.

  • Hi Brent,

What grip should I be using on my 2nd serve?

Keep up the great work, John from London

  • @contemplation09 Hey John and thanks for your Comment. Continental or eastern backhand will give you the best chance for spin.

    Brent

  • very good tip. Will work on it tomorrow. thx!!

  • Brent, great tips man. I've seen a ton of them and they've helped a bunch in teaching all ages/ skill levels. Andy

  • that tip is so true...i face way too much...kinda screws the rest of my service game when my second serve doesn't make it in or it's a lollipop and gets crushed....ugggh

    thanks for the tip

  • As always, spot on tip for the improving tennis player.

  • I expected this to be a routine 'let the ball drop' rant. good work at pointing out some new stuff :)

  • @ZXcannon What are some of the common tennis teaching cliches you're sick and tired of hearing? Brent

  • il test this method

  • thnx

  • Nice tip:D:D:D:D PS: I can only hear u on my left ear:P

  • very nice!

  • Set your sound right, I can only hear on the left

  • same :/

  • nice video!!!

  • brent abel is the best. Ive learn the kick serve last year. It takes a good week to learn. Good luck

  • hey Brent.... nice video, i would say you nailed the most important part that people often mess up. thanks

  • awesome!

  • lol most coach serves are really lazy, mostly just to show some form

  • I think that he also has to bend his legs more and throw his weight into the serve more. His serve looks exactly like my tennis coach's serve.

  • i can't wait to practice this on the court!..i'm a victim of that early turning shoulder flaw on my 2nd serve..thanks brent

  • thanks for the vid, it helped.i can get the ball into the service box most of the time but i cant hit it hard or it misses so i'll try the stuff in this vid. thanks again

  • theres one thing i wanna share with you guys that helped me a LOT back when my kick serve was really unreliable.

I used to swing "through" the ball too early. this made for a flatter serve without the curve and spin that a good second serve needs. therefore, i learned to "wipe" the back of the tennis ball. try practicing the motion where the racquet head goes from 7 to 2 o clock. it seems like side spin will be produced, but if u start from low and wipe up, u'll get plenty of spin!

  • i need to work on my serves they suck

  • same here

  • not the only one =)

  • muahahaha i can't even get it over the net most of the time.. -.-

  • I've been playing tennis all my life and I remember my suckish serves. The key to be a strong tennis player is to be mentally and physicaly strong. Just keep practicing and DON'T give up. Good luck to you.

  • great!thx!! :D

  • Same here thanks :)

  • thanks

  • Nice tip. thx

  • hey....i find it really hard 2 get the ball into the service box at speed on my 1st serve its either too low or miles over, where on the racket exactly should contact be made.....any tips???

  • it isn't exaclty where contact should be made, but your form. Make sure to bend your knees, toss at a 1'o clock position above your head (for right handers)(11 for lefties) and hit the ball at the highest point, and bring the ball down, making contact at the center of your racquet.

  • cheers buddy great tip. really improved with it!

  • bending knees = more power or just easier

  • Yeah, you're talking about the "American Twist"

overhand curve ball, a thing of beauty, but a back killer for most people.

Like you said, and hold your form(not opening up), then pull that curtain shade with a violent delayed hit.

I'm convinced that Lendel and Edburgh would toss farther into the court with this technique and use it as their 80% power 1st serve-- the ball was flatter but still had topspin and would hit and take off instead of skid slightly.

  • Jimmy Conners' bread and butter serve was just a 10 to 4 o'clock 75% second serve. Toss was farther into the court with him.

    Long live the T-2000 racket!

  • What's this .. 10 to 4?!! You're really confused! The throwing motion brushes up against the back of the ball using a racquet direction of 8 to 2; the American Twist is a little more extreme and players from the '70s would try a 7 to 1 brushing action, although this was very taxing when arching the back and is not recommended. Modern players bend more at the knees to develop the throw. No tennis magazine shows a 10 to 4 downward motion because serves aren't played with backspin!

  • Well I feel like I'm on top of the ball going 1 to 7 and pulling down.

But you're right, I'm actually brushing up the back at a 7 to 1, lol.

Remember that Jimmy Conners was a lefty, so I guess he was a 4 to 10.

    *****

By the way. Wasn't it pathetic how Andy Roddick wouldn't take Conners' advice and flatten his strokes out now and then and take charge of a point?

  • The racquet approaches the ball from low to high - the direction of the edge of the frame moves up and sideways. The ball spins on a 45^ axis or steeper, so is a composite of top + side spin. By the time the arm has pronated and the racquet is turning down .. the ball is well on its way and the only contact it makes with the strings is during the upward brush - the ball is never contacted with the racquet on the way down!

  • It's only the perception of the server on the follow through. I've recently read an article in the October 2008 issue of TennisLifeUK (also has a website) page 6 has an article on One-trick Ponies and it mentions Roddick - it says that 'if he could learn to follow his serve to the net he would be extremely dangerous. yet when he found someone [Brad Gilbert] to teach him this skill, he fired him. After that decision, he never made it back to the No. 1 spot again.'

  • Awesome tip! =)

  • i need to work on my top spin serve in general but thanks for the tips i will try them

  • thanks for the tip. I need to work on my second serve. always double faulting

  • ...So THAT'S why my slice serves sucked. LOL

I turned too early towards the net...

    Thanks for making this video.

    ...~~~GOD BLESS~~~...

  • he's good teacher but he's annoying how he has to play tennis before he talks

  • Hi 2 ol... i wuld lyk 2 ask wats d difference between the slice and topspin serve?

  • Isn`t the slice were you shoot the ball a few inches over the net so the ball bounce low, and it gets harder to hit?

  • hey, topspin serve is wen u hit the ball with topspin resulting in high bounce for ur opponent to deal with and i thnk the slice serve is wen u hit across the ball resulting the ball to swerve and change direction after hit the service box.

  • exelent tip, thanx.

  • thanx for the tips.. my problems with my 2nd serve is i always make foot fault because i want to go forward and brush the ball more effectively..

the spin generated is quite fantastic but the problem is i will make foot fault..

so,can u show tips to generate more spin in 2nd serve without making foot fault..

  • try stepping back just enough so u have some room to step in and trya a more open stance on serve

  • nice video

Do you happen to have any tips for forehand grip strokes? recently my wrist has been hurting and the way i usually hold the racquet isn't getting a lot of spin on my shots. I'm thinking of going back to semi western forehand but its inconsistent when i'm trying to hit cross court, most of the shots seem to be going straight down or going to the right.

    thanks

  • Nice tip Brent. Thanks.

P.S. what tennis racket do you use ?

I hope the snow melts quickly, as I'm getting itchy for tennis season to start here. What was about 5 feet of snow on the courts had melted down to about a foot in places, and some places I can see the court ! whooo !

  • Hey FTBM and always good to hear from you...

I'm still using the Babolat Pure Drive 110 these days. Moving from the original model to their new Cortex.

Still got a foot of snow? Bummer. I was down in Palm Springs last week playing the U.S. National 60 Hardcourts. Upper 80s and low 90s all week. Thing of beauty...
