We are certainly *capable* of eating it, but it could just as easily be a survival adaptation, to fall back on when high-protein plant foods aren't available. I wouldn't advise anyone contemplating a vegetarian diet to make wheat the center. You need good protein sources like nuts and legumes, and you need to eat carefully to get enough of certain vitamins. But healthy veg diets are quite possible.
i'm not a vegetarian and i totally understand how wolves need to hunt to eat, wolves are my favorite animal, but i always get emotional when they kill the baby. yet i eat cows and chicken and pigs but i still get sad when they eat their food? so odd!

I find it stupid that so many vegetarian nature freaks can sit around and happily watch wolves and lions tear into animals and rip them apart to eat them but they get all up in arms about a hunter shooting an animal. Shooting an animal in its natural environment is far nicer for the animal, the meat tastes better, one gets a life time experience from it and can enjoy the outdoors while cheaply stocking the freezer. Yet we are so addicted to our supermarkets and lazy lifestyles of nothing.

Perhaps, but the point is that they do sometime kill for the sake of it. Perhaps not willingly, perhaps not consciously, but they definitely do it. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, it's a natural thing for them to do, evolution having chosen those individuals who are the most aggressive for survival. What I really don't like seeing is people regarding predatory animals as noble creatures that will only kill enough for their own food, while bashing human hunters.
I should add that "surplus killing" occurs primarily when wolves encounter domestic stock that have had their flight and defense instincts essentially bred out of them. This is why the wolves surplus kill, because it is unnatural for them to encounter such prey in the wild...one that is completely clueless in terms of "self defense", to say they do this simply for " the fun of it" is absurd considering the harm that predators are at risk of sustaining during such hunts
Human sport hunters do not kill like a maniacs? Really? It's safe to say that human hunters are the epitome of wanton destruction of animals for reasons that are often pretty shady or simply not present at all. There have been hundreds of cases of hunters driving around town with a freshly killed wolf in their pick-up, dragging it from bar to bar with some sort of distorted sense of pride. This doesn't seem like any sort of sentimental value that I know of.

Various animals commit rape, infanticide, etc. but we don't use THAT to justify the same behavior in humans.
Well, why is it necessarily wrong to take the life of an animal? Life and death is part of nature, and humans have hunted for million of years, it's a natural thing to do. Perhaps in the past we have hunted mostly for survival, that tradition is now carried forward in the form of sport hunting. Infanticide and rape, on the other hand, has never been a socially acceptable behavior among most humans.
Then again, who can say that the wolves are acting entirely on instinct?

If the wolves were able to go somewhere they would have (ISLAND). Have you read about predator prey/relationship?. E.G. Lots of lemmings = lots of owls.
The elk were overpopulated when the wolves came. Beavers were almost gone because the elk herds had severely overgrazed near the river banks. What the wolves did was divert them from grazing there, and so the aspen and other plants that they depended on were able to grow back. You should have seen how much better it looked.
It's not the elk's fault though. They were living as best as they knew and they were devoid of the efficient predator that they needed.

If the opportunity arises to make a lot of prey, the wolf will use its chance. You also buy more for you and your family as you can eat at once. @Art10SONIC1 If you've been reading about the current situation in Yellowstone you'd know that elk populations are at their lowest and that wolves are over populated. In Alaska there are almost as many wolves as people, and believe it or not there's actually more forest land in Alaska then towns. The entire human population basically lives along the coast giving the run of THE LARGEST AMERICAN STATE to the wildlife.

I find it stupid that so many vegetarian nature freaks can sit around and happily watch wolves and lions tear into animals and rip them apart to eat them but they get all up in arms about a hunter shooting an animal. Shooting an animal in its natural environment is far nicer for the animal, the meat tastes better, one gets a life time experience from it and can enjoy the outdoors while cheaply stocking the freezer. Yet we are so addicted to our supermarkets and lazy lifestyles of nothing.

@skaterbasist Wolves also kill for fun. This phenomena, often called "surplus killing", is commonly seen in all large predators (hyenas, leopards, lions, etc.). Give a wolf a free shot at a pack of helpless tame sheep or a herd of caribou giving birth and it will kill like a maniac, eating little of the mess.
A human sport hunter did not kill like a maniac, he only took one for the sentimental value it brings him. And the money he paid for the hunt helps preserve the species's habitat.

This phenomenon does not happen often. You are more likely to see a wolf walk peacefully past a herd of sheep. see the whole case, not only the most exiting part.

Perhaps, but the point is that they do sometime kill for the sake of it. Perhaps not willingly, perhaps not consciously, but they definitely do it. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, it's a natural thing for them to do, evolution having chosen those individuals who are the most aggressive for survival. What I really don't like seeing is people regarding predatory animals as noble creatures that will only kill enough for their own food, while bashing human hunters.

I should add that "surplus killing" occurs primarily when wolves encounter domestic stock that have had their flight and defense instincts essentially bred out of them. This is why the wolves surplus kill, because it is unnatural for them to encounter such prey in the wild...one that is completely clueless in terms of "self defense", to say they do this simply for " the fun of it" is absurd considering the harm that predators are at risk of sustaining during such hunts

Human sport hunters do not kill like a maniacs? Really? It's safe to say that human hunters are the epitome of wanton destruction of animals for reasons that are often pretty shady or simply not present at all. There have been hundreds of cases of hunters driving around town with a freshly killed wolf in their pick-up, dragging it from bar to bar with some sort of distorted sense of pride. This doesn't seem like any sort of sentimental value that I know of.

@HaNsWiDjAjA The difference is that the wolf is acting on instinct; the human sport hunter is a moral agent, who is capable of recognizing that the life of an animal is worth more than his sentiment. (Whether that sentiment is a desire for a beautiful trophy, a desire to prove one's manliness, or what have you, it can be satisfied in ways that don't involve taking a life.) Various animals commit rape, infanticide, etc. but we don't use THAT to justify the same behavior in humans.

Well, why is it necessarily wrong to take the life of an animal? Life and death is part of nature, and humans have hunted for million of years, it's a natural thing to do. Perhaps in the past we have hunted mostly for survival, that tradition is now carried forward in the form of sport hunting. Infanticide and rape, on the other hand, has never been a socially acceptable behavior among most humans.
Then again, who can say that the wolves are acting entirely on instinct?

Places like Idaho and Alaska where they hunt wolves a lot is because there are too many. They aren't even native to Idaho and are destroying the elk population.
The wolves that are hunted are on 'LEAST CONCERNED'.
And their pelts are very cuddly and soft apparently, although hairy and smell bad. And people eat wolves.

The elk were overpopulated when the wolves came. Beavers were almost gone because the elk herds had severely overgrazed near the river banks. What the wolves did was divert them from grazing there, and so the aspen and other plants that they depended on were able to grow back. You should have seen how much better it looked.
It's not the elk's fault though. They were living as best as they knew and they were devoid of the efficient predator that they needed.

First and foremost, they say they would never eat the meat of a chicken, cow, etc... that has gone through the mass production line and has been fed corn and hormones. Just read about the current situation of Yellowstone. If the opportunity arises to make a lot of prey, the wolf will use its chance. You also buy more for you and your family as you can eat at once. What is not eaten by wolves would be eaten by other scavengers. That's the natural cycle - and it has worked perfect for thousands of years, before man began to keep cattle.

@NurWahrheiten 9 out of 10 hunts are not successful that is a terrible stat first of all thats how i know your an idiot! well man has cattle now and there is no use for wolves they are scum! cattle are a very valuable thing btw! everything you enviros say comes back to do the world a favor and put a bullet in your brains cause you use just as much or more of the worlds resources and say humans are so terrible like you guys are not human. shit son see the world as it is, don't follow the crowd.

@greenmole20 i think you are confusing wolves with humans. see, humans kill for fun we mount heads on walls to impress our friends, take a few cuts of meat and leave the bones and carcass, where as wolves kill and they eat everything, organs, bones, and meat. if you've ever seen a wolf kill all thats left is fur and a pile of plant matter from the stomach contents

@greenmole20 enviros? im a fish and wildlife conservation technician ive done work with the elk herds in ontario, canada and come face to face with a pack of wolves in the woods at night and i was in no danger, wolves dont kill for fun i have never seen a wolf kill that was left uneaten, wolves eat everything even the bones they're more responsible hunters than humans

@Art10SONIC1 If you've been reading about the current situation in Yellowstone you'd know that elk populations are at their lowest and that wolves are over populated. In Alaska there are almost as many wolves as people, and believe it or not there's actually more forest land in Alaska then towns. The entire human population basically lives along the coast giving the run of THE LARGEST AMERICAN STATE to the wildlife.

@normanknight100 He is totally right. Humans don't need meat to survive. We can easily give the world a better one. But most of us eat meat and can't live without it, and I say we should only hunt and take care of the prays we get. Kill them fast and painlessly, becase we CAN. But many don't, instead give them a slitthroat death cuz its easier
But humans are just assholes shoved up another mans asshole and continue to be assholes because they're nothing but assholes that don't care for assholes.
