If on were to choose between the two, choose the axe. Ice axe is more important and useful than crampons. If too slippery and u have no choice but go on, cut steps with axe. Plant axe in self-belay mode to help prevent a slide. If already sliding, self-arrest with ice axe. When already sliding, crampons will be of no use.
