Hello, I'm a 19-year-old boy from Croatia. I had this piece as a regular obligatory listening piece for my school. This is so far my favourite. Bela Bartok really grew up on me, in my heart. Our teacher also adores him too.
Dear hungarians, you should be really proud of him. :)
@soapie93 with today's technology, you'd be surprised how "real" a keyboard can sound and how well it can copy a slur. There are also countless softwares that do an incredible job at this. Take a look at this example:
Fantastic. The great master certainly left his mark on these works, but the antiquity of the culture is also preserved. Some of those chords are absolutely exquisite. They really shine through with the orchestra playing them.
Superb version of these wonderful pieces, and above all many, many thanks for putting the perfectly-synchronised music up on the site too. Great ; it's *so* good when people are as generous as this on the Web. Thanks.
Variants of Romanian music, such as the hora lunga also made an impression on Bartók’s innate sense of irregular rhythm. Musicologists have shown many important comparisons between Bartok’s themes and the hora lunga. Bartok described the hora lunga
@pais345george Music composition and performance is from the soul, regardless of borders. I love both Romanian and Hungarian classics, and I have friends in both countries, and I've been to both countries. Great music is great music, and people are people, regardless of how they're labeled.
I remember hearing music like this from my earliest age, as a very small boy, and it still rests very beautifully on my psyche. VladekMeyer83, thanks for this wonderful video, and it really is great to be able to follow each note as it's played :)
this is very strange but beautiful music. I especially like the first part played here, the way that it never quite resolves and has such an unusual melody. Can't say I appreciate the other Bartok works I've heard, but this is marvelous!
my goodness, i heard this on KUSC and didn't know which one of his dances it was, but it was very very curious, since the "crying" violin sounded so familiar to me...i'm romanian...bela bartok is my new favorite :) ....after enescu
i'm playing this for the rcm exam (gr 10). I just started learning it. Even though this isn't a piano recording, I still love it. It's so clear without constant errors.
i'm playing this for the rcm exam (gr 10). I just started learning it. Even though this isn't a piano recording, I still love it. It's so clear without constant errors.
please tell me,, on the classical baby the music show 2/2,, the cricket on the roof, that plays the middle part of the folk dance,, is the violin just playing it straight or is the violin tuned a little weird,,? thanks,
Haha, I love this song. I'm a viola player and it has lots of good, strong, viola melodies. Can't hear them much in this composition though, of course, all violas play quiet ;)
All joking aside, beautiful. Glad to find this online :)
Now you've gone and reminded me of a viola joke (though I should preface that by saying I love viola second only to the cello...) the REASON violas don't come out on recordings is that modern technology is advanced such that extraneous noise is eliminated :D
Bartok does have a knack for writing things that are fun to play, though, doesn't he?
WOW! 2 years from the last time I heard this... I come back two years later and again I find it one of the most beautiful pieces of all the academic repertory (and of the world!!!)... goosebumps everywhere, Bartok was a genius... Listen other bartok's pieces like the piano sonata, piano concertos, violin concerto no.2, folkdances, village scenes, hungarian peasent songs and you'll see why he is the best composer of the XX century!
the sound of this orchestra is so strange, maybe it's the poor sound quality of youtube, but the violin and viola sections seem to be played on an electric piano
someone PLEASE tell me why I should like this piece. Because to my ears, it doesn't sound so pleasant. I mean, these are THE FAMOUS Romanian Folk Dances and now that I've finally listened to them, I'm greatly disappointed. Maybe it'll grow on me...
I have played this both with orchestra and piano, and i personally prefer the piano one... for the harmonics in the third mov for the violin, mainly, but also because for the accompaniment their part isnt quite so... well, boring. second violins: -no like-
[PS i wont see any responses as ive stolen my bros account as he left his logged in and i cant be asked to log back in with my own.]
This was the first music that I played when I first jointed my school orchestra. I played the double bass. It was the music that HongKongSchoolMusicFestival required every school to played in 2004.
@michaelchanwahyan I also played this at my school orchestra as a high school freshman. And I was the bassist. Its a pretty cool classical piece. You should check out the "pavane" by Gabrielle Faure as well.
I'm not sure what it is, but I find this performance and/or arrangement to be even better than the solo piano versions...nothing is as emotive and sweeping as a professionally-trained string orchestra.
@DarknessHowls Always.... I can't stand these tuba, clarinet, and mandolin soloists. They're 'nice', okay, but an orchestra (with solo violin.. lol) makes it all just so much better.
I'm a cello player, and I adore playing this piece. This is my favorite video of these songs. Well done, and kudos to you putting up the sheet music! I can see you appreciate music. :)
Great performance of some great music.

@Uncreativeish, I've heard it transcribed pretty effectively by two guitarists, so I imagine two harpists could handle it. :)

Why does this sound all key-boardy?
caohanlu 7 months ago
@caohanlu
I think the Tokyo Orchestra is not accidental...
Japan make the best electric stuff, you know
ambibu 6 months ago
@caohanlu It doesn't, listen to the slurring. They exist, for one, which is impossible to do with a keyboard. Thus, it doesn't sound keyboard-y.
