Excellent documentary. In my humble opinion only about 1% of the population is actually prepared to insulate their own attic. Even then, after all is said and done, you will have saved 20% or less than having hired a professional. This may vary depending on your location.
I sealed and added insulation to my attic myself. It is time consuming, but a recent WSJ story said that GreenHomes charged a woman $7000 to air seal and insulate her attic. I paid about $500 to do mine. So, I saved $6500. Score.
Is it asbestos? Five days? Haha, what a joke. Yes, pay 300% more to have a "professional" do it. There are some things that are indeed better left to experts (plumbing, electrical) but attic sealing and insulation are easy to do yourself if you learn about it beforehand and prep. These companies are just trying to make this stuff look impossible so that you will give them what is in your wallets. And they think we are too stupid to realize this...
I honestly hope this guy never has kids. Kids are hard work and messy too.
Like any DIY project, it can be challenging and very rewarding. It's not nearly as dramatic as this propaganda piece tries to make it out to be. Experts can do a better job, but you can still do an adequate job. The goal isn't to make your home air tight, it simply to reduce air transfer as much as reasonably possible.
I'm imagining the drama the guy puts out when it's time to wash his car. You might get wet!
@12334temp Its about SAVING ENERGY. DIY won't save half the energy for the exact same cost as hiring somebody. For the same price HD and lowes sell just the insulation material, I have installed it! DIY think they save money, but they spend more on insulation, then end up with a worse product that will save them less energy, a double whammy of why most DIY is dumb, that is why HD and lowes promote DIY so much, they can sell twice the product when you come back for tools to fix your DIY.

I think you should fix your steps first before you break you neck. Also attic insulation is the least of your problems
