36 years ago, i was at the elementary school's annual Halloween parade. The only thing i remember was some guy was wearing a really cool Battle For the Planet of the Apes mask. I went again this year for the first time since grade school. Saw a girl in an insanely accurate Zira costume, i told her dad that the last time i was at this parade i saw a similarly cool costume. He and i spoke a little about it, and it turns out it was HIM in that costume all those years ago. Only in Santa Cruz!
i enjoyed it, but completely forgot about it about an hour after i saw it. I will say, though, it was impressive how they pulled off a significant amount of shock value when the ape spoke. This movie had absolutely nothing memorable or classic bound
An ape jumping onto a helicopter....bullshit. And the fact that you couldn't just start shooting the damn apes, and that they actually could outsmart a well armed advanced society ...this movie is ape balls
Massive flaws in the science in this movie. Just a couple of examples, Caesar could not have inherited the intelligence via gene alteration from his mother because the drug wasn't given to her until after she had conceived. And in addition, that drug could not substitute for the thousands of years of physical evolution required for a monkey to gain the capacity to speak.
@milkenobi You would lose that bet. A future tech that allows of light sabers I can buy. A monkey suddenly evolving human vocal chords is just ridiculous to the point of breaking immersion.
I would have liked to hear the guy with the thing expand on his comments about how this isn't that intelligent a film in comparison to other recent films. Examples please.
I disliked this video because I dislike Machinima. Redlettermedia needs to upload their own stuff exclusively on their channel and have patience with the subscribers instead of turning into this.
You can't have intelligence without a neo-cortex. You can't have a neo-cortex without head space to contain it. The monkey skull doesn't have the head space. I reckon I'll check it out from the library when it's on dvd, and if it manages to warm me up to it, it musts be very very different from what I've seen so far. And the shrinking the actors in lotr thing looked ridiculous. The audience tittered at that part when I saw it in the theater. tyfyt
These guys always give me the vague feeling that they're taking the piss out of the viewer even when it's ostensibly a serious review. There's still that weird element keeping things a little edgy, almost like it's scripted.
I agree on most of it, but I don't completely agree with their skepticism on Franco. I thought he was solid here; as he was in 127 Hours. Anyway, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was the biggest, best surprise of the summer for me. I'm gratified that most of the reviews I've read and heard are generally positive as well.
It's a good movie; it deserves good word of mouth.
They wouldn't have ever made the original Planet of the Apes movie if it wasn't for the original novel... I don't think these guys know that it was originally a novel...
@TrueDren - They clearly don't understand the allegorical value of the original novel or the orignal movie, for that matter, especially in the socio-political context of America in the late 60's. Plus, it's got the mother of all twist endings.
The Gas Drug and abusive malfoy was just for convenice and protagonist placement, why do so many films go for cheesy 'Rise of' B-movie titles?. Felt like a nature movie, watchable but by no means epic. Why is RLM on 'Machinima'? should have been a Plinkett review, he rocks go checkout his starwars reviews will make you feel stupid for eating up Lucas's crap but in a funny way.

He would probably be more happy watching Transformers or something. Please folks if you want a real review of the movie, read Empire, or Total Film. Not these pair of idiots.

@Clausfarre "Why be ecstatic over an indian woman. That is just another bow to the multi-cultural society - Which of course is a bad thing. Use real americans."
So no-one's mentioned to you that being racist and nationalistic is NOT a good thing? "Real Americans"? Presumably you mean native Americans, right? Or do you mean the European invaders like you?
The subliminal frame at the end is just a picture of (what appears to be) Mike holding up a piece of paper to cover his face. Nothing written on it or anything.
I just cannot stand Jay, everything he says in this video makes me cringe, ofcourse they would do the film entirely with CGI apes, In this modern age of film the effects that are used are outstanding, what else would you think a multi million film would go for.
You know what, you fucking dicks. I'm sick of you putting reviews up here for free just so we can hear your opinions and be entertained. I like science movies, I think James Franco has a powerful presence and I happen to think John Lithgow looks great for his age. I think I'll throw a bottle through Plinkett's window that says "I may not agree with you but I respect your opinion, you fucking dicks."
why is "redlettermedia" on a website purposely made for 15 year old stupid-ass kids who bash on anything that isn't a video game or a dumb action movie like transformers?
i love how stupid the humans are. when they took the chimp Koba, with his deformed evil face you just know hes gonna go bananas and wreck shit up. and i love James Franco's aloofness in his role. like he wasnt buying into the whole "i'm a scientist" role. still a very enjoyable movie even for just Andy Serkis' performance alone
i think it's funny looking at those complaining or wondering why this is on Machinima when this isn't a TV channel ie they have a choice of watching or not watching but these evolutionarily-challenged morons can't figure this basic concept out and so they write their oh-so brilliant commentary.

hard to find good reviews here on YT. its fine to get raw gut reactions and the biased point of view of the average person...yes i get the point. two guys at home drinking beer talking about a movie makes the viewer feel comfortable. more so than watching some old movie critic, who may have been in the industry for a while and has greater experience, but he may not be hip enough for you. but sometimes you want to hear that side too, even if the guy isnt holding a beer during the review
They pretty much summed up how I felt about the film, especially about it being as smart as a movie about apes gaining intelligence and taking over the world can be. Also, what the fuck is up w/ the last 20 seconds (lol)? At about 9:39 there's a quick flash of an image and even paused I can't make out what it is.
I agree with most of the opinions in the video, but I found the constant need for the film-makers to remind us it is a prequel to Planet of the Apes more annoying than anything. Also, the convenient manner in which they dispensed of the human race is just plain lazy. I thought the first hour of the film was great, but it reached a point where it seemed rushed and the plot took a backseat to an action packed finale.
Can someone explain to me what's going on around the 9:35 mark? I don't have the programs to see what the image is or hear what the slow-down speech is saying
I really disliked this movie, not only for the predictability of the plot and the flatness of the characters, but because of the unrealistic portrayal of the leaps in awareness of the apes. Although I understand that the virus/brain cure thing is supposed to make the apes super-intelligent, that doesn't explain actions taken by the apes that require years of observation and practice, i.e. spear throwing, military tactics, written language, etc., not merely intuition.
@sabretusk12 Of course a prequel has a predictable plot, the plot is even in the title. There's a difference between criticizing a film and being a nitpicking asshole. I'm afraid you fall into the second category. I'm so sorry.
@CheeseCrispsAreGodly That makes me an asshole because I found things in the movie I didn't like. Different things stand out to different people. You aren't providing a counter argument just by insulting me.
@sabretusk12 apes already now how to use tools, its seen in a wild like a simple rock to trow or smash something, the apes didn't use military tactics ceasar and the fat one just signed to them what to go and to do. the apes didn't have a written language in the movie sorry for spelling but the apes used sign language, and only ceasar knew how to write.
@itachisan02 There is a difference between clumsily flailing rocks using a comparatively primitive version of a hand and accurately throwing a spear with confidence. People need to practice for years to get the technique down correctly. In addition, there was a scene in which a captive ape knew that douche corporate guy's name (can't remember his name) by hearing it and somehow was able to write it down without knowing which sound corresponds to which letter.
WRONG!!!!!!!! In The Lord of The Rings, Hobbits were not digitally shrunk. Peter Jackson used the actual midgets for certain scenes. I am sorry, but this is not the first time these two guys review the movie with not knowledge of the directors, actors, story and history behind it. The movie reviewer must be capable of recognizing most of the cast members and crew who spend their time to film a movie. These two do not know more about the movies than a general audience.
@LittleMapleMan NITPICKY!!!!!! It was a throw-away comment about something he had heard before going to the film. No one needed this nerd-rage correction over a 5-second remark in 10 minute video. The main point was about expecting the special effects to suck but being pleasantly surprised that the movie makers pulled it off both in LOTR and here.
I'm watching this on 720p but I still can't make out what is written on the card in that single frame around 9:39? Hallpass? Help us? Or Kingdom of the Crystal Skull :)
I don't recall ever hearing that they digitally reduced the size of actors for the hobbits. Most of that was used with doubles and forced perspectives. They also had two sizes of each set in some cases and in other cases they would make the actors stand on their knees.
This movie helps prove that shouting "no" in a movie will lead to laughs

Where's my brain?
Joeyj3dy 6 months ago
I really disliked this movie, not only for the predictability of the plot and the flatness of the characters, but because of the unrealistic portrayal of the leaps in awareness of the apes. Although I understand that the virus/brain cure thing is supposed to make the apes super-intelligent, that doesn't explain actions taken by the apes that require years of observation and practice, i.e. spear throwing, military tactics, written language, etc., not merely intuition.
sabretusk12 6 months ago
@sabretusk12 Of course a prequel has a predictable plot, the plot is even in the title. There's a difference between criticizing a film and being a nitpicking asshole. I'm afraid you fall into the second category. I'm so sorry.
CheeseCrispsAreGodly 6 months ago
@CheeseCrispsAreGodly That makes me an asshole because I found things in the movie I didn't like. Different things stand out to different people. You aren't providing a counter argument just by insulting me.
sabretusk12 6 months ago

@LittleMapleMan And some scenes with the hobbits were on a green screen to digitally make them smaller.......

I don't recall ever hearing that they digitally reduced the size of actors for the hobbits. Most of that was used with doubles and forced perspectives. They also had two sizes of each set in some cases and in other cases they would make the actors stand on their knees.
