This is odd, because I heard and read the Drell entry in-game one time. But whatever, wonderful entries like all the other new ones too in ME2. I can't wait for ME3's Galactic Codex entries.
It's interesting that the Drell, Asari, Quarian and Batarian races look abnormally human in body structure, facial features, and individual appearnce (more or less).
@halfbreed1426 I meant if a giant non humanoid spider was a teammate, that it would be hard to trust it as a character. All the allies you get are are still humanoid. Two arms, two legs, Two eyes, one mouth, head on top, noses. Aside from color, sizes, and playing around slightly with some organ placement they aren't to different looking from humans.
That's a bad thing. For all the games talk about diversity the most out there thing are The elcor and volus and thats mostly just from size -
differences. They should have been more imaginative. An ally that has no eyes, or no mouth, maybe extra arms or legs. Just not eh the same carbon copy body structure for everyone.
@kninja41 Yeah, good point, however, it seems more likley that a doninant life form needs to have those features to dominate the other life forms. It makes sense that a humaniod reace would fit these needs, minus hanar and elcor, which are just as adept that surviving in there own environments.
Thermal clip addition was a shot in the foot in terms of lore, in first game you could mod your weapon to fire indefinitely without overheating. Thermal clips are an artificial lenghtening of combat scenes so player has to rely more on the infinite ammo of wingmen. With higher ammo count (or heat based as in first game) insanity difficulty would prove to be a viable choice, now it is just repeatedly slamming your head to a wall. Try, die, load, repeat.
The reason Bioware implemented the thermal clip system is because in ME, with the right upgrades on the right guns, you can fire them for long periods of time without having to stop for heat dissipation. For example, the Spectre Gear Level 10 shotgun can fire forever if you install two Frictionless Material Xs. This made the game really, really easy. They fixed it in ME2, and I think they did it right. At least they put in effort to make it canonical.
@burnout21 i think if they still allowed weapons to fire without thermal clips, but made it so the weapons would overheat very fast, forcing the player to really decrease their rate of fire, that might have made it better, especially when you're out of thermal clips. But, there's always powers, and clips are rather abundant.
@burnout21 they should have at least increased the ammount of shots each heat sink could fire. They should have also let you shoot without heat sinks but do something to balance it like make the weapon less accurate or cant shoot as long/slow cool down or something.
The Cain explanation doesn't make sense, as it doesn't require a projectile according to this description. Then again, the in-game description says it moves at like 5km/s, which it clearly doesn't. The only explanation for the in-game Cain is that the weapon makes the projectile so dense that 20km/h collisions result in massive explosions. At the same time, the in-game description says it is non-nuclear, while this says it is, and there's a nuke-hazard sign on the side. Bioware: got confusion?
I'm pretty sure thermal clips were invented to take away the whole "unlimited ammo" thing, making the game a little more difficult. The explanation they give for why there are thermal clips is their way of explaining why guns no longer overheat and have ammo in ME2.
I don't understand how unlimited ammo < weapon overheating. Either give the guys a backup rifle (the only collapse and fold into conveniently easy to carry objects), or let them stay in cover for a bit. Its not like everyone isn't hugging cover anyway, even with thermal clips.
God I hate Thermal Clips so much! It doesn't make any sence. Just because they say the Geth thought it up dosent mean that it actuly is the best option.
@sharpshooter33 There's no other choice. They said that weapons before them were semi-automatic only and overheated extremely quickly. Aside from that, they mentioend that it takes less energy to create Mass Effect Fields than Laser or particle Beams. They DO have Lasers (GARDIAN system), but the Mass Effect Fields are more efficient.
@KoronofHearts Exactly! The only way that it would make sense for the guns to stop fireing is if there is a program on the gun that keeps it from fireing if there isn't a safe way to keep the gun from getting to hot and damaging it. Like what happened to Ziede's gun
@sharpshooter33 Well, what i think would happen is that the weapon would fire for only like a second and overheat, stopping you from shooting until it cools down.
@frightenedanconfused well ok. but somehow, i got the feeling that a good old M4 would do better than any ME gun. And the thermal clips are so confusing in ME2. The guns can shoot unlimited ammo but will overheat without thermal clip. so in a way, thermal clip became ammo, and with that, the guns can no longer do unlimited shots. wtf ?
@bandofbrothersmovie the codex in the first game talks about armor's shields being, essentially, mass effect fields. So that was already in the codex at one point.
Well, I can see at least one reason that one entry was cut. The thermal clip entry her and the thermal clip entry that made it into the game are contradictory. One states that the thermal clips contain and eject heat sinks, the other (the in-game one) states that the thermal clips ARE heat sinks, and are themselves ejected, which makes more sense, since you constantly need to pick up new thermal clips.
@VhenRaTheRaptor Not necessarily true. This has been discussed ad nauseaum on the Mass Effect Wiki, and it's pretty inconclusive. Based on the animation, Shepard could very well be installing the new heat sink while ejecting the old one. He could be palming it and inserting it while working the action on the gun to eject the old one. Regardless, having to constantly pick up new thermal clips does render this entry inaccurate.
I guess if you take a look at the manual, it does explain (briefly) what the thermal clips are, so that's one reason why the voice clip is not there. Thane explains pretty much everything about the Drell that this clip tells you, so that's one reason it ain't there.
The other Heavy weapons puzzle me though, considering the Avalanche is in the codex, but not the others.
this mentions that armor is integrated w/ a mass effect field? this explains why biotics can't affect armor like shields and barriers. i don't know why bioware cut this stuff.

@finstrike7 No, the Drell only have unvoiced, secondary Codex entries.

in 2000 the only gun overheating are chopper miniguns ... but somehow, in 2255 even a handgun can overheat ^^
siddbastard 1 year ago
@siddbastard the guns use a mass effect driver to propel its ammunition
capable of accelerating something the size of a grain of sand with enough force to kill (the ammo is shaved off of a bloc o material)
yet somehow the bullets only seem to move as fast as arrows
