Jesus is also called the baptizer. This verse is referring to being baptized with the holy spirit. I have no problem with the word baptism. In fact I believe like you that without we can't be saved. But what is baptism referring to...that is the question.
1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This man did not finish the scripture. It actually teaches that water baptism does not save.
