As someone who owned and played this game from the very first day it was released at my local Toys'R'us and had to use a game genie to beat it, you've earned my respect.
I remember I had the 8bit NES console when I was 13 and that was my favourite game. On the console I got to the stage where you fly with a plane-like thing and I couldn't get pass the fast electric lines or what ever they are.
But now 8yrs later on the PC emulator I got it done finally. at the level before the last I didn't use pause, just gotta learn the whole level ;)
Anyway, Best playing times were on the console, definitely. PC is too advanced in some ways I think :)
Heh, yeah, it's certainly quite doable without using the pause trick, but I basically just stuck with what worked. Did you use save states on the PC? I might have been more inclined to memorize the Clinger Wingers if I'd been doing that.

It varies a bit, actually. I believe it is mostly around 3.5x.

You should try werewolf on nes, that has to be the hardest game ever... :| I could beat this game on nes but final boss in werewolf was way too hard.
