Oh Judith, you are so Australian and I mean that in the nicest way. What a beautiful song. We sang this at school when I was a child in England. It captivated me then and it does now as a long-time Kiwi. The poetry of your land is uplifting. Thank you.
The beauty of this versiobn is that it's played straight, with no stupid 'arrangement' flourishes. Some of the versions are so awful - even versions played by the Australian military. Just play the fucking song and stop butchering it! Go Seekers!
Weird that they make quite such a big place for this song. In American terms, it's basically about a hobo who escapes getting arrested for poaching by drowning himself.
@sorrowsingsoftly But don't you think that the uniqueness of the lyrics and the haunting, beautiful music make the song great? I fell in love with it the very first time I heard it, which was probably during the movie "On the Beach" with Gregory Peck.
@VrgniaMailman Oh aye, it's a great song, I love it. I just find it strange that it has achieved such a height of aestheticism, if you will. It's nature as a folk song of their culture makes sense, but the lyrics just seem odd in so high a place.
Great version I heard this song since I was a kid im 75 ys old now Im a Yank from Sacramento California You Assie have been great friends To the U.S.A. and hope if Im lucky to be able to visit you great country some day I play a little guitar and sing this song at some of the senior centers in this area thanks to A.P. Patterson we also have an ol timer named A.P.(Carter) of the Carter family Ronny
Funny how political correctness gets in the way of what's right. Waltzing Matilda will never be the national anthem of Australia but it is really. Anywhere in the world a few strains of Waltzing and everyone knows that's Australia. Wish Canada had something so recognizable.
@deriter64 Excellent comment, except for the last sentence. What about O Canada??? A fabulous national anthem. Perhaps the best in the world, in my NSHO. :>) IF .... Waltzing were the national anthem of Australia, I think I would rate it best, however. Whoever the lead singer is for the Seekers, she is fabulous. The music was clean and on chord, but I found the rhythm a tiny bit choppy. I prefer versions that "flow" a bit better.
@VrgniaMailman Hi, sorry no intention to offend, I've been standing up for Oh Canada for more than sixty years now but they keep changing the words and I never know what I'm supposed to be singing. I haven't travelled much but in most European countries Oh Canada doesn't seem to have any instant recognition and in the States The Maple Leaf Forever used to seem more recognized. Oh what the heck, as long as we know what we're standing up for. Merry Christmas, friend,
Although finding an authentic swagman in 2010 would be very rare, I'm sure they would sit up with pride if they knew their entire country (and people all over the world) were singing a song dedicated to them!
This is so beautiful!! It brings fresh air to me.
