It's hard to tell you what is wrong, because it can be so much! The only thing I recommend you is to try again, and watch the instructions slowly. Be exact everywhere during this effect, I'm sorry I can't be at much help :/

try to pick a bit darker colors, not black, be sure to have clicked on ''composite mode'' and clicked ''burn'' on the track in the middle, and have clicked composite mode and overlay on the track with the text

Are you sure that you've written something? if you have, watch at 1:00, 1. keyframe the progress should be 0, and at the last keyframe the progress should be max, if this doesn't work, ask again

You just don't know how to use it.

Right click on a clip, and click Video Event FX, theres like 30 effects or something there, maybe even more =)
